I Can Not Use NS Because "Tamper Protect" disables itself.

I reported last night across different threads about issues with a fresh clean re-install of NS:

1.) After a successful install the first two updates complete, but after they do the Green Banner turns maroon color and I get a red warning that "the service has expired." The next update( the third initial update) completes successfully with a green banner - is this because the combination of an updated NS and a new initial update has made the first two updates obsolete?

2.) On the first Start-Up of NS on reboot I get a red exclamation point on the tray icon, but this soon turns green.

3.) The Deal Breaker. Just as I reported last night, the "Tamper Protection" in settings does not stay checked. I open settings immediately after install and it's checked. Close settings after making my settings choices and when I reopen settings the "Tamper Protection" it is un-checked. So I re-check it-close settings, open settings and the "X" next to Tamper Protection is gone - rinse-wash-and repeat. For me this makes NS unusable. The firewall in NS has been tested to be very strong, but even with Tamper Protect (or what is called Self-Protect in other products) there are enough ways to disable an av product so without "Tamper Protect" I consider NS to be extremely vulnerable to being disabled by an attack and will not use it. This is a recent development. Currently I don't have enough time to have Customer Support try to fix it, and frankly, I don't care how "trusted" they are, I avoid any and all situations where I need to give a remote technician access to my PC. I have had had an incident where a remote technician from a most trusted company finalized by cuaisng more issues than were fixed.

Any ideas why Tamper Protect won't stay enabled?  I have scanned my PC with several security products and they show my PC is clean.

Hello hok

Have you thoroughly removed the previous security program that you had installed and restarted afterwards? Do you have Fast Startup disabled? Have you tried the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool? Perhaps you received a bad install. Please read the first paragraph warning.

Re: I Can Not Use NS Because "Tamper Protect" disables itself.

Hi Floplot :-)

Yes, I used the Norton Removal tool and the removal tools for all other AV programs, except Emisoft which does not have one.

I always "restart" my PC which is unaffected by "fast shut-down." Mystified by this one. I have been using NS 2015, mostly, since the week of its introduction.

How about the results I'm getting from the first two initial updates saying "not in service." Any thoughts on that. The recent failure to be able to keep "tamper protection" enabled is a total mystery to me.

I have already done one uninstall-reinstall with the same result. Weird.

I recently switched to a wi-fi modem/router( new landlord thinks typical internet installations are messy :-( ) could this be having any effect causing these problems?

I have gone through my registry looking for remnants of other avs I have tried and eliminated them. There is an entry for a "shared symantec dll" that I am afraid to remove.

Hello hok

In Settings>Administrative Settings>Product Security, do you have Norton Product Tamper Protection turned on? That setting has to be turned on  for the X to stay checked  on the Quick Controls. Please check that out.

LOL :-) Never noticed that setting there-maybe changed it by accident.

What about the first two weird updates I have been getting that appear to complete and when they do I get a maroon banner and a red warning saying "no longer in service." Sounds like the response I get from my Bitdefender TS - I have 4 months to go on it and it always says Your Trial License has expired after I install it.. I have given up on Avangate fixing it. The irony will come when Avangate auto-renews my license even though I opted out. They are THE WORST!

OK Tamper Protection is fixed floplot :-)

I am concerned about the the first two updates They download and install and then the banner is maroon with a large " X" and says "not in service." The third update is ok.

What's with the first two updates? Have they become obsolete? If not, I  have no reason to have full confidence in my installation. I feel like my installation is missing something that was in the first two updates. On the second update you could see it download and install and then comes the error message: "not in service." What does this mean?

I'm gonna have to uninstall NS until I get an explanation for the error message on the first two updates. My guess is they have become obsolete, but I need an educated explanation to have confidence in my installation.

Hello hok

What do you mean by the first 2 updates? The current version is 22.5.0.124. To get that version, there were either 2 or 3 parts to the update. It is all one update to the version I have posted. I believe that each part required a reboot. If you still have Fast Startup enabled, that could be what is causing what ever problem you are seeing. The computer has to be properly shut down and properly started up for the different parts of the update to get into your computer completely. Some users needed more restarts even and some it took a couple of days to get it working. If you have a green checkmark in the Norton icon in the task bar area and the program is doing every thing that you want it to do, then the program is working ok. If it is s scanning, updating and doing what it should be, then it's ok.

Maybe you need a graphics driver update if the colors are off. I haven't heard of anything maroon in color having to do with Norton that I know of.

Re: I Can Not Use NS Because "Tamper Protect" disables itself.

I downloaded the program from the server using my original downloader. After the program was installed I naturally did live updates. The first two that I did when completed showed the maroon banner with the big "x" and in red said "not in service." The third and final initial live update was fine-showed the green banner and required a restart or do it then by NS closing apps.

It would seem appropriate that it should not be necessary to keep current with the forums or support annoucnements to get the correct version and updates. The current version should be downloadable via the server and following live updates.

Hello hok

When you reinstall NS, you should use the download button in your Norton Account. That has the latest version or the next to latest one. You can also use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool. You should not use an older installer that was in your computer as it could have become corrupt especially since you have used all sorts of different security programs.

Hello hok

Hi Flo,

Has the NRnR tool now been updated for compatibility with the v22.5 releases?  At Tony's last report (that I saw), it had not yet been made compatible - so it was still being recommended that the NRT combined with a fresh download from the Management site be used instead...

I can volunteer that I tried using the NRnR tool to update a system from NSwB v22.2 to v22.5 a few days ago - It did not go well. Ended up having to restore a recent drive image to get that system back to v22.2 and then subsequently use the NRT to accomplish a workable v22.5 installation.

Re: I Can Not Use NS Because "Tamper Protect" disables itself.

Hello John

Update:

The Norton Removal Tool(NRT) and Norton Removed and Reinstall Tool (RNR) have been updated to support 22.5.0.124 product (English only). Other languages will be updated soon

The above was a message to me on June 24. I haven't tried it, but that is what I was told when I asked that question. Every one's system is different, but it should work on most I would say. Seeing all these problems with 124, I don't know, but that is what I was told.

Re: I Can Not Use NS Because "Tamper Protect" disables itself.

Thanks for confirming, Flo.  Guess I'll have to chalk up my experience with the (supposedly updated) NRnR tool to being another .124 failure (of some sort) - It would lockup the system on the post install "Starting Product" screen, long after finishing the v22.3 product removal & system restart phase. Fortunately (for me) the NRT succeeded in doing its job properly...

Yes - Lot's of (seemingly) different issues all happening at the same time. Poor Norton staff must be at deep odds, trying to figure out which fire to try and put out first...

Re: I Can Not Use NS Because "Tamper Protect" disables itself.

Hi floplot :-) Thanks for the info.

I went to My Account. Even though I have the 5 device version it shows 10 devices all used and no further installations allowed. I have one device - my PC. NS 2015 was removed from my system with The Norton Removal Tool. I have installed - uninstalled with the Norton Removal Tool - re-installed NS several times in the past - maybe that is the explanation for the error in my account. I have no problem downloading what appears to be the outdated version with my original outdated installer.

Yeah I know - contact Support :-)

Re: I Can Not Use NS Because "Tamper Protect" disables itself.

Hello hok

You can edit out the devices that don't belong there and delete them into the garbage can. If you are hesitant about doing this yourself, then do contact customer support and tell them just how many computers should be in the account and that every time you reinstalled, it used up a seat. They are the ones who can straighten out your Norton Account for you. Remember though, every time you got a new computer, that might count as another seat. But I think you got rid of it if it didn't work properly. Customer Support is your best bet because you have changed computers often I believe for a while.
