Re: I have an error message that occurred during LiveUpdate

Perhaps you received Norton popup:

Error: "Error updating product" or "Error Applying patch"
You may receive this error when Norton cannot shut down all the drivers in use to apply the patch. To resolve this problem, restart the computer and run LiveUpdate again.

Re: I have an error message that occurred during LiveUpdate

I have seen this error a few times. It is a bit concerning. I was out for a few hours this morning and when I came back I have the above message "......as a result, your Norton product is not running".  Does that mean that my computer has no protection for possibly several hours ?

1) as a result, your Norton product is not running

1) was you machine in Sleep mode?
....your Norton product is not running = meaning?  Norton LiveUpdate will not run?  Norton QuickScan will not run?

2) as far as I know...based upon your report "seen this error".   Norton was trying to update Norton.  Do you run Apply Updates Only on Reboot?

Please run Norton LiveUpdate and Restart (not Shut down) machine.

  1. Run LiveUpdate until you see the message, "Your Norton product has the latest protection updates."

  2. Exit all programs, and restart the computer.

Hi bjm_

Computer was not in sleep mode.

Yes, I know I have to restart - the error message tells me that.

Are you able to answer my question "Does that mean that my computer has no protection for possibly several hours ?"

(I have just turned on "Apply Updates Only on Reboot" - maybe that will solve this problem.)

Dave. Yes!! Change that setting to ON. Your computer remained protected, the latest update just couldn't apply itself due to your settings not allowing automatic application.

Your computer was protected.
On my machines.  Norton objects applying product patch when I have certain program/s running (program x n' y button in system tray).  Norton prompts me to close program x n' y.   Then after I comply.  Norton proceeds with product patch.

Maybe, you had/have certain program/s running in system tray that Norton wants closed before applying patch.
That's why I asked "Apply Updates Only on Reboot"?

SET YOUR NORTON PRODUCT TO APPLY UPDATES WITHOUT RESTARTING YOUR DEVICE

On Windows 7 or later devices, you can apply updates without restarting your computer.

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton product main window, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, click Antivirus.

  4. In the Antivirus settings window, click the Updates tab.

  5. In the Apply updates only on reboot row, do one of the following:

    • To receive LiveUpdate notifications asking if you want to apply updates without restarting, move the switch to Off. This is the default setting.

    • To apply updates only after you restart your computer, move the switch to On.

  6. In the Settings window, click Apply, and then click Close.

OK guys - I am still not convinced.

You say my computer is still protected when that error message comes up, yet the message says that "your Norton product is not running".

If Norton is not running how can it be protecting my computer ?

Hmm...."your Norton product is not running" does sound like Norton stopped applying product update awaiting user interaction.

Sorry, IDK for sure whether Norton stopped protecting your computer awaiting user interaction.   I'm thinking Norton is paused awaiting user interaction to apply product patch...as to what "your Norton product is not running" means regarding protection.

Lets ask @SoulAsylum, @Nathan Peeters.

Re: I have an error message that occurred during LiveUpdate

FWIW!! Having apply updates only on reboot set to OFF on my devices. There have been many instances, where, a product update ( NGC ) completed install, in the process of doing so, it will close Windows Explorer, stopping all running processes, finish its setup, then, restarts all the previous running processes. Including Norton itself. This is because it uses the Windows Hello function routine to complete its tasks, as long as you are logged in under an Admin account. Usually. This takes place during the overnight hours while I am sleeping. This does not leave my device unprotected as I still restart the system to fully complete the task Norton was undertaking overnight, having noticed icons moved on the desktop. Its a normal routine my side, never found any indications the computers were left unprotected in any manner to date.

Re: I have an error message that occurred during LiveUpdate

Hi SA,

Thanks for your input.

Did you ever get that error message referred to above that states "your Norton product is not running. To ensure protection please restart your computer" ?

As I said before, if Norton is not running how can it be protecting my computer ?

Dave.

Re: I have an error message that occurred during LiveUpdate

Yes I have. Here is a similar example I just noticed while looking at my Norton settings for something. Please note the two settings that are greyed out and not selectable. And, at the bottom a restart is required. I've been using this computer for some time now and just saw this by chance. The message here is that when updates are automatically downloaded and installed they are silent in most cases as these shown are. In no way was my machine left unprotected during this time. Hope that gives ya some additional peace of mind.
