Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Right after I installed Norton Online Family, Firefox was updated to 3.51 (from 3.5), and the sxsframework 3.5 extension quit working. This appears to have disabled most of the capabilities of the Norton Safety Minder. This means there is nothing to prevent my unrepentant teenager from roaming the Internet indiscriminately. Other extensions kept working through the update, and the ones that didn't were auto-updated in short order. I think Norton needs to modify there extension so minor updates don't immediately disable protection.

I also notice that there are two other Norton extensions (probably related to Norton 360) that have been disabled for some time: Norton IPS 1.0, and Norton Toolbar 3.5

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Hi doProtek,

We are working on supporting Firefox3.5 and in the process of testing it.   For now, please use Internet Explorer  or  go to Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs.

Highlight Mozilla Firefox 3.51 and click Remove button, then install any Firefox version prior to 3.5.

Please check Norton 360 Forum at http://community.norton.com/norton/board?board.id=Norton_360 for more details on the issues with Norton IPS 1.0 and Norton Toolbar 3.5.

Thanks,

Katie

macleodken,

Please make sure the Social Network Supervision is turned on under Settings ->Social.

Do you see any other activities get reported, for example, Web activities?

Thanks,

Yes Social monitoring is turned on and yes I am receiving web activity.  Facebook shows up as a visited website under All Activity but there is no activity under Social Networking.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

macleodken,

1. Do you see an account has been setup under Settings -> Social as shown in the screen snap below?

2. What version of Norton Safety Minder installed on the kid's PC?  You can find it by clicking on the NSM icon (a dog paw image) in the system tray and selecting About Norton Safety Minder.

Thanks Katie

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Hi. I just intalled this program on my computer that is shared with my 4 kids. I created log ins for everyone. I wanted to test things out so I went on my daughters side and searched for porn and such. Nothing stopped me from viewing all kinds of things and entering into those websites. Also, it doesnt show any activity for her at all. I have read the other posts and all my settings seem to be correct. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.. I use firefox but they use internet explorer.. Please help.

Hi kbnamon,

Please make sure each of your kids is being monitored.  Please go to Settings -> Profile, do you see each of your kids' profile has the setting as below?

I am also receiving messages that Norton security minder has been disabled but the program appears to still be monitioring activity.  the kids do not have the password. Could this message be an error?

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Hi dcottle,

Do you still see the Norton Safety Minder icon (a paw image) at the system tray?  If so, it is possible your system ran some type of updates, ex, Windows updates which caused the system to reboot or restart the services for the program.  In these cases, Norton Safety Minder program restarts automatically.  That could be the reason you received the messages, but the NSM is running and functioning correctly.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Still having trouble with OnlineFamily reporting social network activity.  I am running Safety Minder on two computers, one used primarily by my son, the other by my daughter.  Both are running Explorer on Windows XP.  I am seeing reports of my daughter's social activities, but not my son's.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled Safety Minder on his computer (it's the latest release).  I have deleted and recreated his profile.  I have checked Explorer to make sure the add-on is enabled; it is.  The All Activity and Web tabs both show that my son is regularly logging in to Facebook.  However, the Social tab continues to report "No activity ..." regardless of whether I look at "Today," "Yesterday," or "Last 7 Days."  Help?

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Hi profken,

Please also check if Social Network Supervision is turned on under Settings -> Social for your son's profile.

Confirmed: it is turned on. However, the settings page shows the message, [son] "has no known Social Network Accounts."  He logs into Facebook regularly.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

profken,

Did you just start using the program?  If so, please check the link here.  This user experienced something similar to what you are facing now and it worked later .. Maybe it was just a long delay somehow.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

According to the program "Limit the time on all household computes.  This does not seem to be working as expected.  I have the program loaded on 3 differnt computers and have indicated that the account that is to be monitored.

when my daughter changes computers the time alotment is not updated on the computer she moves to.  Example:  she is allowed 3 hrs a night if she starts on one and uses 1 hour and then move to anouther and uses 1 hr.  I logged in as her and checked the first and it said she still had 2 hours left of time.

we are useing XP pro and foxfire 3.5.2 and norton safty minder   1.1.0,21

How do we get the time use to reflect accross all computers?

KatieQ, thanks for the follow-up.  Looks like Social Activity is now being reported; thanks.

One question, though.  All it does is indicate that our kids are active on Facebook.  Is there a way to tell with whom they are interacting?

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

profken,

We currently don’t support the feature whom they are interacting with.  I’ll put it to our enhancement list for the management team to consider.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Thanks, Katie.  I'm puzzled, though.  Since I can see that facebook was visited by looking at the "all activity" and "web" tabs, what is the advantage of the "social activity" tab?  What's the value-added?

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

profken,

The Social Networking Supervision enables the parents to monitor the activities of the children over  Social Networking sties.  The program captures any attempt to provide a false age during the registration process and the account name that the child uses.  Also, the program monitors and logs the Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that the child provides over the social networking site.

These are some sample functions that the Social Networking Supervision has.  Please keep this in mind… the program is still in the process of being developed and more and more exciting and useful features will be available for different areas of the program in the future releases, and of course that includes Social Networking Supervision.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

When I try to see what my child was typing in the IM program or searching the web, I can not see any Hebrew characters.

Instead of Hebrew characters I see gibberish such as:    ׳₪׳™׳™׳¡׳‘׳•׳§

Please advice?

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Every time my children go onto websites that are allowed (either specifically or by catagory), the Online Family Norton safety minder keeps popping up with a message, "You are not allowed on lu.gamevance.com.  This is a gaming website", and sends my E-mail a notification.  Examples of websites where this occurs are: Wikipedia, Library websites, Reuters, educational websites, etc.  This effect is continuous; the message will pop up a couple times a minute.  I observed this effect.  I received over 500 E-mails today.  I had to unlock the gamevance website to stop this (and, of course, gamevance is exactly the sort of website that I want to lock...)
Kudos0

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

OnlineFamily.Norton is actually behaving as it should. This URL is being called each time because gamevance appears to be something that should not be on your system: see this  --> http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=1d23b7b8066e1eb083be6c9f11d2a286

It would appear from this report that it is some type of spyware.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

The issue is that the message "lu.gamevance.com" shows up when you're on a "safe" website.  If there was some sort of spyware on my machine, I would expect that Norton Internet Security 2009 (which I keep updated) would be able to detect and eliminate it.  However, "lu.gamevance.com" has never showed up as a "threat" on any search done on the computer.  The OnlineFamilyNorton application is indicating that we should not be visiting the gamevance website, but the web page (wikipedia, etc.) that we are at doesn't even have a hyperlink to that program.  Are you saying that this is some sort of intrusion attempt, and that the OnlineFamilyNorton application can detect it but that the Internet Security application cannot?
Kudos0

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

To be clear I did not state that "lu.gamevance.com" was spyware. I stated that it should probably not be on your system. You may have installed it yourself not knowing what it was. It appears that it continues to check back with some server "lu.gamevance.com" while you are surfing.

NIS 2009 does not think it is a threat as a legitimate program can certainly send data to and from a URL.

What I think you should do is try and go to add/remove programs and remove any type of "gamevance" product that was installed. That should clear it up.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Hello,

I keep getting emails that my son has tried to go to a game site called raptr.com.  I have gaming turned off under his settings. I keep getting these emails every hour.  He is at school and does not have the computer with him that has norton safety.  What is causing all of these emails of blocked website visit?

Kudos0

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Sounds like a similar situation, he probably has some type of gaming software that checks back to a server and each time it does, we report that the system tried to get to that site.

I would suggest the same, uninstall that product if you don't want your child using it.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Please get this to your technical team. I am using onlinefamiliy.norton.com. I have found that some web pages are reported MULTIPLE times to my email. Yes, I am screaming. My daughter visited blocked shopping sites and I got 399 emails. Each email refers to one URL location for a graphic, html element, or link to another site. This is the third time I have sent a comment on this. This needs to be fixed before you start charging people for this program! Here are some examples:

I will save the emails for a few days if you would like a copy and give me a valid email address to forward them to.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Is your child using IE or FF?

If not, then determining the embedded urls (the locations where graphics and other items on a web page are retrieved from) will not work properly.

I would have 2 suggestions, make sure you are using IE or FF and we have just found out recently that the Yahoo toolbar can cause us to not report sites properly as you have suggested below.

Please let me know what browser and toolbars you are using.

Matt

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

We are using Internet Explorer 7.0.

I will check on the toolbars tonight.

I think my daughter uses MSN.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

One other thing to check is that since you are using IE, that the Norton Safety Minder plugin is still installed and enabled.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

The activity reports for Web appear to be correct but whilst there are many entries for the 31st Dec, the time activity report shows no activity. Any ideas?
Kudos0

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

the time activity report will only show entries if your child uses the computer beyond the time limits or tries to log in after curfew

so unless they are breaking a time rule, the time activty report will show nothing, however in future release we will starting tracking and reporting total time being used

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

I've been using Online Family Norton for quite awhile and just yesterday began having issues with the reporting.  While I'm logged in with my user I get emails reporting usage from one of my sons account, which he isn't even on.  It'll report him as not monitored and also attempting to access sites that are only in my favorites from my log in (when I'm logged in and NOT even using those sites).  It's just weirded out on me and I don't know how to correct it?  Thanks for the help!  I LOVE this!  In fact, I wouldn't even allow my children online without it!

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

Please update to the latest version of Norton Safety Minder 1.2.0.39

You can do this manually by going to the home page onlinefamily.norton.com and clicking the download link.

Uninstall the old version and install this new version.

Let us know if this solves your problem.

Re: I have a problem with activity reporting

I keep getting periodic messages the Safety Minder has been disconnected.  I'm sure my son doesn't know my password, so I'm not sure how this is possible.  The explanation about having the browser open doesn't make sense to me.  It was of course open while downloading, but has been closed and re-opened dozens of times since then.  I need to know what the deal is here.
