I just wanted virus protction

I purchased Norton AntiVirus for virus protection.  Now it is trying to clean up widows temporary files, internet explorer files, defrag my discs, etc.  How do I turn all this new crap off.  I resent them mucking with my system.  Perhaps they could take all these developers writing fluff and have them work on the base product.  Or cut staff and lower the price.

I did find in settings how to turn off temporary file cleanup.  Still am curious if others find these improvements at all useful.

No, I'm with you, I just want what it says on the tin, and not a load of bloat along with it. You can switch it all off though like you found. If the developers focussed on the core product then perhaps everyone wouldn't be having all the issues that this forum appears to be dripping with and they'd have had a release with a lot less problems and a lot happier customers.

hi JohnOzuk

I said this in a thread five or six years ago although I would accept that an Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Windows Temporary Files cleaner is hand for those people who pay little attention to this.

With these "extras" did you check Administrative Settings and Scheduled Tasks particularly for the Disc optimiser settings.

Turned off all scheduled tasks.  Hope that gets them all.  Maybe I could accept these features, if developers have that much free time, IF they defaulted to off.

Could'nt agree more with you guys! I think the trend is going to go back to a simper 'protection' solution. The era of offering browser and phishing extras amongst other things has had its day.

We just want a program that protects the system which when required allows the user to tweak it for what they need. As the price is quite steep in the market Norton needs to ship up fast or lose lots more clients.

hi JohnOzuk

You may wish to look under Administrative Settings and turn off Idle Time Optimiser, I have not noticed a similar setting for IE Temp File Cleaner etc. but there are settings for Firefox Temp File Cleaner and History Cleaner in the same place if you use Firefox.

That was already off.  Perhaps because of all else I already turned off.  Thanks.

Hi Michael,

Perhaps the following is the configuration area that you're looking for...

hi John

Yes there is a setting under Task/scheduling but under Administrative Settings there is a specific setting for Firefox but no equivalent setting for IE.

Nothing like a well thought out, consistent interface
