I think I have a virus but norton isn't detecting anything

I accidently clicked on a dodgy link on my facebook feed a few nights ago and when I opened spotify this morning, I noticed this prompt: "javascript confirm- sin1.g.adnxs.com"

I've updated norton and ran about 3 full system scans and a rootkit scan and nothing has come up. I think I have adware, but i'm not sure. What are your thoughts on this? Am I freaking out over nothing? Please help!

hi Antea

It looks as if you have picked up what is called a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) whilst in itself is not often malicious it can hijack your browsers, search and give you annoying pop-up's. It is best to have an experienced person to assist with it's removal.

There are a list of sites which will help you in the thread linked below, choose one of the sites, register and post your problem when a trained experienced volunteer with help with removing the PUP and sometimes give you general advice on your computer:

It would be great if you could let us know how you get on once everything has been sorted out.

Re: I think I have a virus but norton isn't detecting anything

Hi Michaelsalis,

Thank you for your reply! I've uninstalled spotify and I haven't experienced any more weird pop ups. I've looked through background processes and all the programs that have been downloaded and I can't see anything out of the ordinary, and I haven't downloaded anything recently. I was wondering if it's possible that spotify is the rogue program or maybe there's another program acting in the background which is somehow acting through other files? When I initially saw the pop up, I didnt click on it and just quit spotify through the task manager and it disappeared so i'm inclined to think it's spotify that has the issue? I could be wrong though!

I haven't experienced any browser redirects yet. Sorry if i'm being vague, i'm not very computer literate (despite being an engineering student- I cant code for the life of me). Do you guys think any further course of action is needed? Should I consult the other forum? I really dont want to bother people if it's not a big deal :/

Re: I think I have a virus but norton isn't detecting anything

hi Antea

Almost any program if installed from the "wrong" place can cause these types of problem particularly if they are popular like Spotify. I don't use it and not sure what it might do, if a free version perhaps you will have to put up with adverts and pop-ups. I doubt that downloading Spotify from the Official site would cause particular problems as many people use it without difficulty. The malware removal sites would not worry if they find you do not have an infection they are happy to make sure people are not infected and remove any there may be to help keep the internet safe for everybody.

You may wish to install a back-up scanner to your Norton there are a number to use I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free edition which I use to scan my devices perhaps once each week just to check if anything has avoided Norton.

You can download/install MBAM from the link below, choose the Download option not Buy. At the end of the installation the final screen will give you the opportunity of a free period of Premium use, untick that box, the program will be free for you to use to scan your device:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Download

Once installed click on the Settings Tab then Detection and Protection to make sure all the boxes are ticked then you can run a scan.

Thank you very much for your help, Michaelsalis! I've run malwarebyes and it's come up clean too. Lets hope that's the end of that saga, i'll be sure to provide an update if there are any other symptoms or if the AV comes up with anything.

hi Antea

Should the problem reappear which is possible I would go straight to one of the sites listed in the thread linked above. Uninstalling spotify may have solved the problem but they don't alawys disappear by doing that, just keep an eye on it to be safe.
