I think something is wrong with live update

I run live update every morning as soon as I connect to the internet,  this morning I noticed 6 updates, strangely the last several days it has always been 6 updates, but this morning I happened to notice that the file size of the updates said zero bytes. Now I need some help to check I have actually been recieving updates, I am using Norton Internet Security 2010  version 17.8.0.5

Re: I think something is wrong with live update

We need to collect some more information to analyze the situation.

Is liveupdate completes successfully?

Are you getting any error message while running LiveUpdate?

Please check the virus definition date displayed after clicking the time stamp next to "Run LiveUpdate "

Please check for error message by clicking Help and Support > Get Support

Name of the updates which are having file size 0

Re: I think something is wrong with live update

Hi Reactivate,

I saw from other threads that you are running Vista is this correct? 32 or 64 bit?

Where are you looking to get the file size of the download?

Also, have you looked in History for the last few live updates? You can check there, highlight the entry of choice and then click More Details. Then click the + sign next to Total Updates Applied. This will give you information on exactly what updates were downloaded.

The actual defintions will be in the following location:

C:\ProgramData\Application Data\Norton\

After this will be a bunch of HEX numbers and then NIS_xx.xx.xx.xx and underneath that will be a directory called Definitions. There are several categories such as VirusDefs and AntispamDefs to name a couple.

You will see sub-directories here named things like: 20100916.002 which will tell you the year/month/date and an incremental number afterwards.

Also, you do realize you should upgrade to NIS 2011 correct?

The direct link to NIS 2011 is http://www.norton.com/nis11. This is for the English version so please let me know if you need a different language.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: I think something is wrong with live update

I just did my Live Update for NIS 2010, first time I did it in 3 months.  I guess my question is, How often do we have to do a Live Update?  Every day?

Re: I think something is wrong with live update

Can't do all you say yet guys, I am not logged in as Admin. Norton does not appear to be finding updates properly. Earlier I went 49 minutes without an update after trying to get updates by using liveupdate, then I got a pulse update only when I ran live update on the 49 minute. Two hour later I come back online and Norton finds no updates, says update not required Really??? find that a little strange, just ran liveupdate now, 15 minutes later and I got a pulse update only. I am using Vista 32 bit, and I get no error messages. I have not upgraded to 2011 as it seems a lot of people are having problems with it. This is a huge concern to me, so I will go offline and log in as Admin and post a reply tommorow. I think I will clear all history logs, as I have had issue with logs not clearing in the past when they reach a certain size. What is alarming me is that Norton is not reporting any problem, but clearly it is not updating properly.

Hi junkfresh,

As long as you have live update and pulse updates enabled in Computer Settings you should not have to run live update manually at all though you can if you wish to.

Live update will download approximately every 8 hours or so as long as live update is enabled. If you are always connected to the internet (broadband connection for example) then pulse updates will retrieve updates every 10 minutes or so, though sometimes the interval can vary for various reasons.

Best wishes.

Hi Reactivate,

Though not very often I have seen times where up to an hour or so passes without an update.

What do you typically see in the main NIS window next to Run Live Update? NIS gives a time frame of when it last ran and you can also look in History and check the directories I mentioned if you want more specifics for each definition update category.

If you look in the directory path I mentioned you can tell us the names of the various files in each directory and we can tell you if this is the latest one or not.

Best wishes.

I cleared all history logs and things seem to be o.k now. Checking in NIS  definitions folder I can see definitions are showing up to date. Thanks for the help and advice Allen.
