Icons have grey X

Hi Guys,

My new laptop came with Norton Internet Security, but I already had a subscription to Norton 360 so I installed that.  Now most of the desktop icons have a grey X on them.  Functionality seems unaffected.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Icons have grey X

Try going to Norton Settings, and in the quick settings section on the right, turn off Backup Status Overlays. See if that changes/removes those X's.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

These look to be overlays put there by Windows itself. Probably unrelated to Norton, which does not use grey "X" overlays.

Thanks; I already tried the backup overlays checkbox; no difference.

On the Windows point; I'll try looking into that, but the X's only appeared when I installed Norton 360.

I don't think Norton would be putting a backup overlay over a Norton 360 icon, as that is a program and would not be in the backup list.  More likely the X's are holding the spot where the Windows "shortcut" icon would go.

Found it.  It turns out the X's are in connection with OneDrive; it was awaiting permission to update the desktop icons, although it was doing so very quietly (and why would it need permission?).  Their appearance when I installed Norton 360 must have been a  coincidence.  Thanks guys.
