Search. Amazon results click Amazon UK but then when I click the wiki link further down it takes me back to the amazon uk website. I know its something to do with the toolbar because when I disable it everythings fine

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Do you have Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit?

Can you give the version ID of your NIS -- Support / hover over About where it is in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number form 0 to 9

Which you have can affect the settings of Protected Mode in IE10 as I've found out.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and I was investigating a problem a user in another place was having with downloaded files having their names modifed to that _ was used in place of . on exe files to prevent them running when clicked on. I was trying to find out if this was a feature of IE10 and Protected Mode since it did not happen to me but was happening to the other person on a "new Windows 7 computer" which means it was probably 64 bit .....

I've not heard back from him yet but thought I'd bring it up here. I don't see it affecting what you describe but it often helps others to know the full details of the system.

When you run IE10 on a 64 bit system and have Protected Mode enabled it automatically runs in Enhanced Protected Mode that is in 64 bit and not the default 32 bit of IE even under 64 bit systems. I've read a fair amount about this but .......

Hopefully one of the other volunteers here who knows more about the Norton Toolbar than I do can help more specifically.

BTW Do you use the Google toolbar for searching, the normal search box in IE10 or the one in the Norton Toolbar?

Does your search string include Amazon? From what you describe I don't quite understand what is going wrong unless you are getting Amazon when you are searching for something else ?

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi Smig,

I have recently been experiencing the same issue with NIS2012, IE10 and Google search.

To clarify for other readers:

  1. Perform a Google search from the IE10 address bar or from google.com.
  2. For example, search for  ‘tools
  3. Click any link such as sears.com.
  4. The Sears page will be displayed.
  5. Click the back button and click the link for lowes.com.
  6. The Sears page will be displayed again, not the Lowes page.

Whichever link is selected first will be the only page displayed no matter which subsequent link is clicked.

I have found two workarounds for this.

  • Open subsequent links in a New Tab.
  • After clicking the Back button, before clicking another link, hit the refresh button.

You are correct that disabling the Norton Toolbar prevents this anomaly from occurring.

This only occurs when using NIS2012, IE10 and the Google search engine.

I’ll see if I can notify the Norton staff about this issue.

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi Phil,

I just tried searching from Google Toolbar in IE10 and couldn't reproduce your find, so it must only be a NIS12, N360v6 problem.

Cheers,

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

That is correct.  The issue appears to be limited to NIS 2012 or N360v6.

Thanks for checking that!

Phil

<<  .... workarounds for this.

  • Open subsequent links in a New Tab.  >>

I realize why I don't see this problem -- there's a setting in IE for Open each new instance in a new TAB / Window

Here are my settings:

These settings suit me since I often want to compare two pages or look up something and don't want my first location changed and it's simler than remembering to use the CTRL key when going to new location.

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi...

I am running windows 7 32bit and my norton version number is 19.9.1.14, I was going to update to new version (NIS2013) but I do like NIS12. Phil summed the problem up exactly (Thanks Phil). I have my home page set for Google uk and only norton and W.O.T toolbars are enabled, Might try reinstalling IE10 to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the replies so far

That would do it.  Thanks for the input, Hugh.

I doubt that will make any difference.  I have reproduced this on four machines, so I don't think it indicates any problem with the IE10 installation.

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi Phil_D,

It's funny because when I brought the issue into the community's attention, the "usual" apologists replied that there was not a problem with NIS 2012 & IE 10.

See:  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NIS-2012-Identity-Protection-module-and-IE10/m-p/925671#M233981  and:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Is-it-time-to-go-from-NIS-2012-to-2013/td-p/993767/page/2

The issue was reproducible on 2 machines running W7 64 bit and it's particularly the Identity Protection module, (NIS 2012 add-on for IE), which causes the problem.

However, the problem does not exist with NIS 2013.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Apostolos,

Let's drop stuff like the "usual apologists" when others tell the truth about their own experience.

Neither of your links show any "apologist" messages and mine describe what happens to me and said I can't test Windows 7 64 bit; I did not deny what you said although the OP in one thread said it did not happen to him.

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hugh,

It appears that, no matter of the version of W7 you have, 32 or 64 bit, the issue is here.

For me it was solved when I upgraded to NIS 2013.

You have simply a different setting in IE, that's probably why you did not see the issue, you could however change the setting for a moment and reproduce the issue rather that telling in a previous post that you do not see the problem and more or less imply that what I see on 2 machines is false.

Kindest regards,

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi all

I posted this problem in the first place but we seem to have gone of topic and as yet nobody has come up with a reason or solution. If you can't create the problem it does not mean it does not exist but if you can then it's a lot easier to solve....In my opinion.

Thanks.....

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi Smig,

A temporary solution is provided by Hugh here:

Here are my settings:

Just modify your IE settings and it will work.

I doubt if Symantec will fix this for NIS 2012 because it should require a new patch and the product is already old.

Other solution is to upgrade to NIS 2013, as I did, that will help you not to have not this problem again.

Hope this helps,

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- @ Hugh, Hugh, no need to be sorry, just keep in mind that when I post an issue, it is already doublechecked, and reproducible on my machines, the correct approach is to ask what settings I have on those machines, and try to reproduce the issue, if it's reproducible, at your end, in order to confirm that there's a problem. That doesn't mean that your help will not be required in the future by me.Hope all is clear now. OK -- I replied in the spirit of your earlier message message ....... <s>

I have a long experience (like my working lifetime <s>) of research and of troubleshooting and I can assure you that "No" or a Negative answer is the most valuable reply you can get since you know that you do not have to persue that track any more (unless all else fails and you need to retest your results).

The fact that I posted based on my experience did not mean anything more than what it said -- it does not occur under these circumstances and I would not have looked at my Tab settings if Phil had not posted his negative experience that it does not occur when you force Open to a new Tab.

But my real objection to your post was your facile reference to the "usual apologists" and that still stands -- pointing out that something does not happen under certain circumstances is nothing to apologize any more than you have to apologize for posting that it does happen to you.

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hugh,

Just a little note to say that when I had NIS 2012 and the issue described in this topic, I had the same "Tabbed Browsing Settings" as you with the exception of the box: "Always switch to new tabs when they are created", which in my case was and still is unchecked.

I no longer have NIS 2012 to test, but I believe that this is the setting that causes this issue with IE10 and NIS 2012 when unchecked.

No problem with NIS 2013.

I have all the other settings similar to yours.

Let me know what you think.

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

I don't think the Always switch to new Tab setting caused the situation described because I just disabled the Always switch setting in my Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit IE10 setting and searched for Tools as Phil D describes .... except that Sears did not come up probably because I can't stop Google from using my location.

I chose one  tool find -- Harbor Freight -- and opened it. Then used the Back button to go back and selected another -- Ace Hardware -- and it went to that .....

But then I don't use the Norton Toolbar since I prefer the Google search box although I did enable it when I first reported what I found ......

However I see you know the cause and it's quite different:

<< The issue was reproducible on 2 machines running W7 64 bit and it's particularly the Identity Protection module, (NIS 2012 add-on for IE), which causes the problem.  >>

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hugh,

You're right, if I remember correctly, by disabling the Identity Protection module that behavior stops but unfortunately you lose the Safe Web icons. :-(

Let's hope that there will be a patch for the NIS 2012 users.

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi

Tried the settings in IE10 that a few of you have suggested but it made no difference....Here is my setup

I am running W7 32bit with NIS 2012

I have my home page set to Google .co.uk...Toolbars... Norton with identity safe set up and Web Of Trust

!. type Amazon in search box in middle of screen

2 results

3. First result Amazon.co.uk click goes to site..Click back

4. Second result Amazon twitter click takes me back to Amazon Co.uk....And so on down the page taking me back to the original site I opened. (any search does the same, taking me back to the original site I opened first)

Thanks...

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

smig,

OK So this is not happening on the IE browser search boxes but on the Amazon website search screen.

I did ask earlier which  search box you used !

I"ll try later to do it exactly as you did but I don't use Identity Safe and I don't use WOT.... and I'm not in the UK.

I'd suggest you temporarily disable WOT since it seems to duplicate one of the Symantec add-ons

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Hi Hugh

It is nothing to do with Amazon, this was just an example. if you type Amazon into the search box when you click search the first 3 results are

Amazon.co.uk

Amazon twitter

Amazon Wikipedia

Which ever one you click on first when you click back to your results and pick another web page which ever you clicked first is displayed eg.

Click Amazon.co.uk

Click back on browser

Click Amazon twitter

Result... you are taken back to Amazon.co.uk

I apologies for the confusion and not replying

I have been using NIS for about 7 years but for the past couple i have just upgraded the software, not done a clean install for a while so there is probably a lot of old appdata and registry entries from previous versions... this may be the problem

Thanks....

Re: IE 10 & norton toolbar

Sorry but I just can't reproduce that and I've tried it with the settings I normally have

That's with my standard settings for always switch to new tab but note that while the intitial move from here to the Amazon as a result of the search on Amazon opens in a new Tab subsequent moves from the search results do not result in opening on a new tab and you can backtrack with the <- Back arrow in IE 10

However if you force the search result link to open in a new tab by holding down CTRL then you can't backtrack because the Back button is not active.

But note that Google Search tool bar has settings for how to open:

so you might check to see how yours is set.
