ie and dep

Hello, I have a question about security. I would like to use ie9 on my vista64 system. I have data execution prevention turned on and any time I use ie I get lots of BEX errors it seams like. I read you can do with out dep if you have real time protection. I have Norton360, so can I turn off dep?

Re: ie and dep

Hi,

It is not recommended to turn off DEP.

If you are having BEX errors, then something is wrong with the installation of IE9.

I would recommend that you uninstall IE9, which can be found in your list of Windows Updates, REBOOT, and then reinstall IE 9 either from WU or from the Miscosoft download page.

Reboot again and normally you should no longer get any BEX errors.

Please report back.

Thanks.

Re: ie and dep

Hi,

Ok, let's try something else:

right click on My Computer
go to Properties click on Advanced System Settings
under Performance, click Settings
click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
click Add, browse to the executable file for the program and add it, in your case it's iexplore.exe

For more info about BEX see:  HERE

Let me know if it worked.

Re: ie and dep

Since it is only happening in IE 9, try turning off hardware acceleration.

Re: ie and dep

Hi,

You can also apply DaveH's suggestion and see what happens. Reboot IE & also reboot the pc.

Are also your GPU drivers up to date?? (in the case that you do not want to disable Hardware Acceleration in the browser).

Re: ie and dep

Yes I tried turning on dep for all and then added iexplorer.exe to exceptions (although I found a couple iexplorer.exe's and it would not let me add the 64bit version) I still have the same issue so I must of done something wrong I'm looking into that now.

Thanks,

Thanks Dave for the link and I will try that also.

Re: ie and dep

Hi,

If both suggestions don't work and if you are not getting any other severe errors with your system, you can either disable DEP, reboot IE & reboot the pc or ignore those errors as long that your video experience is not affected.

Let us know..

Re: ie and dep

I disabled hardware acceleration still had BEX errors. I don't have any addons except for the usual adobe, java, etc. But I noticed "arc software" a long time ago I had a Phillips mp3 player and that was its software, disabled it and BEX errors went away. When I upgraded to ie9 from ie8 I must of allowed it to follow.  I should have checked that along time ago maybe an update had made it a problem though I haven't used it for a long time.

Thanks Apostolos, you answered my question with first post DEP is needed, wasn't sure if I really needed it when I had Norton360.
