IE8 browser freezing fix

I recently purchase NIS10 and love it except for one glitch. When I opened Yahoo finance in IE8 the browser froze. I got help from Norton chat ( had to go to supervisor though to get the right help). To fix this problem turn off Browser protection, run live update, reboot and turn on browser protection.

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Well it turns out that the real fix was to turn off anti-phishing. I simply can't use Yahoo finance with pishing on. I guess I will try to pass this on to Norton so they can add this site to the list of safe sites.

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

If the fix you mentioned was not the answer, I would be cautious in visiting a financial site with anti-phishing turned off.

Do you have your IE8 Smart Screen Filter turned off?

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

mdlubin,

Does that mean you had NIS 17.....136 or 17.1.0.nn and now have the latest 17.1.0.19?

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Well, now I can't get on Yahoo finance (which is a very safe website) without turning of the browser protection. Turning off anti-phishing does not work. Any suggestions for a fix?  I don't know where IE8 Smart "Screen Filter is. I never had this problem until I switched from ZoneAlarm to NIS

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

I just tried turning off the smart screen filter and it may be the answer. Is it safe to browsw without it?

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

I  have the latest, 17.1.0.19. Turning off Smart Filter seems to be the answer. I have now turned anti-phishing back on and still no problem. I will report back later it  continues to work well.

I should have known to come to this forum first and not waste my time with Norton Live Chat, who did not have a clue!

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Norton Anti-Phishing and IE Smart Screen Filter both perform a similar function so it is advisable to use only one to prevent the sorts of performance issues that you are reporting.  You are well protected using the Norton product which encompasses all of the Smart Screen FIlter safeguards and has tested extremely well in phishing protection tests.  I would also advise you to clear the cache in IE to help with your issue.  Click Safety > Delete browsing history....  In the dialog box make sure Temporary Internet Files and History are checked and click Delete.

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Hello md,

I for one was never able to get any version of NIS 2009 to work with IE8 on my two home computers. Since the release of NIS 2010 however I have not been experiencing any more problems (ccsvchst.exe used to lock-up during restarts and shutdowns when IE8 was installed).

My guess is that your problem is caused by 1 of 4 things: how IE8 is configured, outdated browser add-ons related to the yahoo finance web page, error(s) resulting from a faulty NIS install, or malware.

This may help you. Make sure your computer, your browser add-ons (like adobe flash), and NIS 2010 are fully updated. Reset all NIS 2010 settings to their defaults so anti-phishing and browser protection are turned on. Make sure the IE8 smart screen filter is disabled (uncheck the box under advanced settings). Then make sure the boxes called "disable script debugging (internet explorer)" and "disable script debugging (other)" in the advanced settings tab of IE's internet options are both checked.

If that does not work then you may want to try a clean install of NIS 2010 using the norton removal tool and a reset of IE8. I recommend you try my other idea first though and then let us know if it works for you.

Also, since your question is not yet solved, you should take away the "answer" status of your previous post so people browsing the forums will know that you still require assistance. There is an option to do so under the "options" dropdown menu of that post.

Hope this helps!

google search will populate pages with the similar IE8 issue...

I am concerned about the sequence of events.

It appears you have a problem.  Then you fix it.  And it goes away.

Then some time later, it comes back.  You fix it a different way.  It goes away.

Then some time later, it comes back.

This is very strange.  Something has to be triggering these  problems.

My first concern would be malware.  Malware is almost organic in its behavior.  It does something nasty today; tomorrow it does something else nasty.  Although the progression of the problem is so lengthy that it is not like most malware behaves.

Since Norton hasn't found anything at the moment, try downloading, updating, then running a scan with the free Malwarebytes and see if if finds anything to be concerned about.

It your computer is not infected, I would open IE8, go to tools>internet options>advanced, read what they say about reset, then try it out.  It will definitely fix anything that is add-on related.  After restarting IE8, I would then progressively re-enable add-ons.

Also, you could download the free Secunia PSI and install it to your computer.  It is a small program that analyzes your applications and tells which ones are out-of-date and risky, helps you find the updates, and even helps you install them.  When you use it, set if for "advanced."

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Thanks Mijcar,

I downloaded  Malwarebytes and did find and remove a malware file in the Registry. I will post later when I see if that was the problem. In any case I am glad to have removed that file.

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Since using Malwarebyte to  remove "roguedeus" cleaner from my registry and deleting all of the temp  internet files I had accumulated, my IE8 is working well again. I also found that the my wife,s user file still had smart screen filter operating and turned it off, although I can't see how this could affect my user, which is the administrator for the computer. Thanks to all for the help.

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Mijcar,

You suggested the OP run malwarebytes to check for malware. When OP ran it, it found malware which NIS had not found.

Could you help me understand why you suggested running that program?

-More effective scanning than NIS?

-NIS was unable to properly scan OP's system because pre-existing malware had impeded NIS installation?

Should NIS users have malwarebytes handy as a backup?

I'm glad your advice worked, but I'm wondering why it takes malwarebytes to find malware on a system that NIS is protecting.

Thanks.

Actually, this has been discussed thoroughly on this forum.

But here's the summary.

There is always a gap in time between when malware is released into the wild and when it is discovered.  Then there is another gap between its discovery and the development of a good detection signature.  Another gap between that and the release of that signature.  And an even larger gap between that and the development of a method for clean-up.

All these gaps add up to risk for the consumer.  For each particular piece of malware there will be one company that first comes up with a delivered signature.  And perhaps another one that comes up with a good removal strategy.  This varies for each new piece of malware.

For this reason it is good to keep one or two on-standby anti-malware programs ready on your computer.  These programs are not enabled - that is, they are not constantly monitoring the system, because if they were they would conflict with one another.  But if there is the possibility of infection, you can launch one of these programs immediately to check that out.

The tools we've recommended a lot for this are the free versions of malwarebytes and superantispyware.  Whichever you have, you should regularly open and update it.

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Mijcar,

Thanks for your reply. I have seen advice in the forum for people who were infected to use other products. I wasn't aware that NIS users should keep alternative malware detection products on standby for use.

Re: IE8 browser freezing fix

Well the problem is back again. Is there any reason I should not enable smart screen filter in IE8 and turn off Anti-phishing  in NIS?
