I'm having performance related issues with Norton Internet Security

My copy of NIS has become very slow to open and to start certain tasks such as scanning, and I repeatedly see a message saying that Norton is having problems connecting to the internet (other programs do not seem to have the same problem).  Is it easy for me to re-install the Norton software and, if so, how do I do this and would it perhaps improve the performance ?
