IMPORTANT! NIS09 changes in confidence network level whitout my permission

Hi all.
I noticed that the confidence level of network changes without my intervention, and this worries me!  . I usually connect to a public wi-fi in a public network (with password)  and NIS09 is set to "shared" automatically. I changed it to "restricted." However, on two occasions found that NIS09 changed the trust level to "shared" without my intervention. I have noticed that this happened today, coinciding with an update of the IPS.
When I set the trust of a restricted network, I want this to be permanent until I decide to change it, and I do not like nis09 to make changes on their own and without warning.
Please, someone can tell me anything about this subject to clarify why this happens? I do not understand the reason for these arbitrary changes without my permission, and this may be dangerous in terms of privacy.

Greetings

Hi Serekantum,

That is part of a feature to make it easier for users to share file/printer on a secured network. To disable this functionality, you can go to Settings - Internet Settings - Advanced Settings, and turn off Automatic File/Printer Sharing Control.

Serekantum,

Please select View Network Security Map and look at the Network Details drop list. How many items are there? Wih your 'current' network selected, Select Edit. Are any of the Network Details different than you previous sessions? In your Security History, is there any mention a new network being detected?

Re: IMPORTANT! NIS09 changes in confidence network level whitout my permission

Hi Serekantum,

The Automatic File/Printer Sharing Control should not be changing any networks you've already classified.  It should only do this for networks you haven't touched.  Did it get changed to "shared" when you connected back to the same public wi-fi network?  The setting is a per-network setting.

If you have time, when you are connected to that public wi-fi network, please private message me the output from:

1) Launch a cmd prompt

2) type "ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt"

3) Send the contents of ipconfig.txt to me.

Thanks,

/Chester

Re: IMPORTANT! NIS09 changes in confidence network level whitout my permission

Thank you very much for responding so quickly. The network that I connect it in a bar with wi-fi, when I entered first NIS09 rated the level of trust in sharing, and I went into the settings panel to change network-level restricted.

The point of connection in the bar is always the same, but the number of computers connected to the same network varies with the amount of people who are using at any given time. I watch every so often that the restriction is turned on, and today I realized I had changed without my permission.
I'm not sure if the router's IP address in the wi-fi bar is dynamic... ?

Regarding changes in the Network and Sharing, if I disable the option "file sharing" is automatically activated the Windows firewall, which would conflict with NIS firewall(My OS is Vista Premium SP1)

Hi ChesterK, now I'm connecting from a PC that is not mine, and a different network at the home of some friends, but tomorrow when I connect to wi-fi point I will step by step what I've said, and I'll send you private message with the full data.

Once again, thank you very much everyone for the quick response

Re: IMPORTANT! NIS09 changes in confidence network level whitout my permission

When I'm referring to the "Automatic File/Printer Sharing Control", I'm referring to NIS's option:  Settings -> Internet -> Smart Firewall -> Advanced Settings -> Automatic File/Printer Sharing Control.  I'm not talking about the "Network and Sharing" control panel in Vista.  This setting  is independent of the Windows Firewall and you should not turn on Windows Firewall.

I look forward to seeing your network details and hope to help you out with the issue.

Thanks,

/Chester

Re: IMPORTANT! NIS09 changes in confidence network level whitout my permission

I must say I am impressed.

Serekantum poses a question and in the same day, within mere hours, three (count them, three!) staff members offer responses.

On the other hand, I feel like the invisible man.  I posted my query a week ago and have yet to see anything.

I'm glad for Serekantum.  He deserves help as much as any of us.  But -- and I am sure that there are many of us who are asking the same question silently -- what does he have that we don't?

I'm sure it would help to post the link to that message -- there are rather a lot of them about <s>

I'm not particularly worried about it.  Worse case, I pull a client's security system and give them something else.  But since you asked, here's the link:  Link.

I would have thought the subject of sufficient interest to the staff that they would notice the topic.

My interest and reason for posting is the comparison of one poster getting hit with three responses to his fresh post while way too many questions dating back days and weeks have not yet been answered nor graced with the courtesy of even an acknowledge that anyone from the staff noticed that question.  I think we might end up offending too many desperate people with that policy.

As I tried ever so gently to hint at.  :-)

mijcar, Chester and I both specialize in the firewall aspects of the products. This is generally a voluntary effort for Symantec employees and in this case, two people that work on the firewall happened to respond.

Thanks for the link -- it is unusual for there to be no answers, even if from me asking for more information <g>

Re: IMPORTANT! NIS09 changes in confidence network level whitout my permission

Hello Reese_Anschultz, just send a private message to ChesterK with full details of the public Wi-Fi connection in the bar, sure there is an explanation to clarify why the levels of NIS restriction changed without my permission. You asked me if some details of the Wi-Fi varies in the bar, and what varies is the amount of computers that are connected at the same time. Usually have about four or six PCs, but the number is changing and depends of the day and time. There is no a static number of PCs connected every day, but the network name and the name of his adapter is allways the same, I wonder why NIS changes to "sharing" a network that I deliberately put in "restricted" and did so without notice.

Greetings and thanks one more time.

Re: IMPORTANT! NIS09 changes in confidence network level whitout my permission

Serekantum, thanks for the additional information. The number of other machines connected to the wireless access point shouldn't make a difference. Since you've sent Chester some additional information, and, he's more familiar with the specifics of this area of the code, I'll let him continue this from here.
