Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

I have an Alienware Area 51 running Win 10, all the most recent patches.  The other day, Intel said that I had an update waiting so I installed it.  Intel Rapid Storage Technology prevents the invocation of the VPN.  It will no longer start or open.   The following seems to be correct.

When I look in MS Win 10 under update history, it states:

Driver Updates (1)

Intel Corporation - SCSI Adapter - 2/7/2019 12:00:00 - 16.0.2.1086

Successfully installed on 8/2/2019

..........

When I double click on the Intel Rapid Storage Technology icon, in the MS Win 10 "hidden icon tray" it opens a window and says that - that technology is in control of my SATA disk

Help would be appreciated.

Hello Tommy. Have you updated to Windows 10, 1903?

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

Have you restarted your computer a couple of times since the updated driver?

Are you using the stand alone Norton VPN, or the one that is included with the new Norton 360 products?

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

Yes, I restart every day so it's been restarted approx 10 times since the update.  I checked and I cannot rollback the update.

This is the VPN for Norton 360, not a standalone product.  If you think the standalone VPN will work please send me a link.

Thank you both!

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

I think that I found the page for downloading the Norton VPN, but it's another $40/year and I cannot afford it at the moment.

Can we arrange for me to use it for FREE, without charge until you figure out how to fix the Norton 360 issue?

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

Tommy, were you having this issue before the update KB4512941?  If NOT, you may want to uninstall that update and reboot. You can also roll back the driver update you installed and reboot. Follow these steps to do that:

To rollback the driver:

  • Press Windows + R on the desktop screen.
  • Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
  • Expand the category you want (Intel Rapid Storage) and right click on the driver and select properties.
  • Navigate to driver tab and click on Roll Back driver.
  • Make sure you reboot.

Let us know if this helped.

Cheers

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

Unfortunately, you can only rollback for 10 days, and the "Roll Back driver" button is grayed out.

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

If you have the new Norton 360 with the VPN function included, you cannot even install the standalone version. The installer will not complete.

FWIW!! The latest IRST drivers from Intel can be downloaded and installed from here as well.

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

OK, I removed Microsoft Win 10, "August 30, 2019—KB4512941 (OS Build 18362.329)" and reboot.  I was able to start the VPN on reboot.  I then paused updates for 7 days.

I'm not sure what happens on the 7th day, I've never had to pause updates.  Hopefully this will be resolved.

I really appreciate the effort and you all deserve a round of applause.

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology - VPN Issue

You can go back into your pause updates settings and click "advanced". On the next screen select a date. Glad we could help and you have a solution allowing your VPN to work properly. Have an awesome weekend.
