Internet problems with Norton Family

I have two HP laptops both identical and both having problems with browsing the net.

The problems seemed to start after recent windows updates, my kids were unable to play Club Penguin - kept coming up with network errors. Shortly after we would get blank IE pages and timeouts, we could not even connect to our router or perform windows updates. The same symptoms are present when logged into an unmonitored administrator account.

Rolling back sloved the problems but when I re-updated the laptops the problem came back. I even reloaded one of the laptops from scratch but as soon as I put Norton Family on the problems came back. If I uninstall Norton Family or end the task in task manager then the internet starts working again.

The laptop details are:

Windows 8 with all updates applied

A/V - Windows defender

Norton Family version 2.9.0.21

Framework 5.0.0.51

Datastore 2.9.0.21

SNS 2.9.0.21

When we lose connection we get the following error in the log:

HTTPEvent

SSL Certificate Settings created by an admin process for endpoint: 0.0.0.0:52000

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Hi jimblob2,

You mentioned that you are not able to browse the internet and play Club Penguin.  I assume the issue here is that  you are not able to get to internet, not JUST Club Penguin, right?

You said "Rolling back solved the problems"...  Are you saying you  uninstall the current version of Norton Family 2.9.0.21 and install a previous version of Norton Family?  If so, what is the previous version of Norton Family?

What version of Windows defender do you have?

Please double check to see if you have any other anti-virus programs on the PC.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I rolled back Windows prior to the windows updates, it does look like there is a compatibility problem with the Windows updates and Norton Family.

I had been in contact with Microsoft who said to contact you regarding the problem.

General internet browsing will download a little (about 1-2 seconds) and then not work for about two mintues and then you get a little more data. It shows up more on Club Penguin, I think it is because of the sheer amount of data when loading up. Can't connect to my router at all it times out. De-install or terminate the Norton family task and then the internet works fine and I can connect to my router.

Windows defender details are:

Antimalware client version 4.3.215.0

Engine 1.1.9901.0

Antivirus definition 1.159.513.0

Antispyware definition 1.159.513.0

There are no other antivirus programs on the computers other than defender.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I'm having the exact same experience - with NF running, IE comes up and remains blank...never connects to any page, and ultimately times out. Affects both monitored and unmonitored accounts.

I'll offer a few more observations, in case they help shed some light on what's going on:

 - right when this started, I began getting a ceaseless parade of notifications about the browser plug-in getting disabled.

 - Uninstalling and reinstalling NF appears to resolve the problem, for a short period (a day?  two?)

 - the windows event viewer reports a long series of timeouts from the NSM service

In my case, the last time Windows was updated was 9/11, and as I recall this started happening about a week after that.

I was already at the 021 version of NF when this started. We're running Windows 7.

Hope this helps...

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Hi,

So glad to have found this thread.

For what it is worth I have exactly the same issue. Looking back at my system restore the problem occurred late last week  around 09/19 when Norton Family was updated at the same time as a number of updates from Microsoft - although I can't say for sure when it was as I have since done so many restores and system restore creates since then in order to try and diagnose this that my history does not go back far enough now to be sure. And I'm not specifcally pointing the fingure at Microsoft as there were also updates to iTunes, Acrobat reader, iCloud.

The culprit could be one of the following: KB2687455, KB973688, KB2836942, KB2836939, KB2574819, KB2709981, KB2467173

For information I am also running Windows 7.

I did a system restore to a point before these updates and then installed the above Microsoft updates one by one. there was no issue with browsing. I then uninstalled (what was left of) Norton Family and installed the latest version and the issue came back immediately.

I have had to remove Norton Family in order to allow my browsers to work, so currently my children are unprotected on the web.

Cheers,

Mike

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Hi I'm having the same issue. All browsers very slow to start loading pages and frequently lock up. I noticed it about a week ago. If I kill the NF process, everything works for a while until it re-spawns. I've had to uninstall Norton Family as the computer was unusable :-(

I’m running Windows 7 and it is happening on monitored and unmonitored accounts.

Thanks

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Hi,

I've seen multiple PC's with the same issue - IE comes up blank, no menu, no title bar, no nothing, and just sits there in an endless hourglass. This started happening on Monday. And I noticed the new NF came in about that time also.

Listen, y'think your developers can do a little better job of testing before they unleash this crap? Because quite frankly I have better things to do than field a whole bunch of complains about this.

Right now all I want to know is how to get back to the last working version, and how do I prevent your automatic updates from wreaking havoc on my systems? When a new version comes out, looks like I'm going to have to do what the developers aren't doing - TEST IT FIRST !!!!!!

Hi,

While the Norton Family team is checking into the issue, I had a remote session with a user who reported the issue.  We reinstalled Norton Family on the PC (It was uninstalled before the session) and the internet started working.

I'm NOT saying reinstalling Norton Family will resolve the issue.  But can you please uninstall/reinstall Norton Family on the machine to see if it makes any difference if you haven't done so.

If you are still experiencing the issue and interested in having a remote session with me, please send me a private message in the forum, so we can arrange a time.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Hi,

I am glad to see it was not just my computers affected.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no success. However I did find a laptop we dont use very much and it had older 2.8 Norton Family install files. I copied these files onto the laptops running 2.9 and then installed the 2.8 files and Norton Family is working.

It looks like the problem is with version 2.9.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I have had the exact same issues and it's not the first time. Last year I had the same thing and it took WEEKS to resolve. I have removed Norton Family from my computers now and I won't be installing it again. Life is just too short to spend night after night trying to resolve Norton's mess. I am none too pleased with Norton 360 either, after spending the last two evenings trying to update it. "Click here to update Norton 360" - click..... wait.... wait... ERROR "We are unable to complete your request" - restart - go to support centre - "Download Notron remover/installer" OK... restart - Norton removed...restart -  wait... wait... is it installing the new Norton? NO! Message from Windows 7: "Your PC is at risk etc..." OK restart again... click on NRNr again... restart AGAIN... finally, it's working... is my internet any better? NO, because Norton Family is messing it up AGAIN!!!!!!!

I've officially had it with Norton.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I've found that after 2.9 comes in, it won't work until an Administrator logs in and goes on the Internet. Once it works for Administrator, it starts working for everyone.

I've seen several PC's already where standard users (all of our users are standard) get hung up in the hourglass in IE. One PC could not get on the Internet since Monday (today is Friday). I restart, log into Administrator, and eventually I get in. Then I log out and they log in, and everything is fine.

Needless to say when you're responsible for 30 or 40 PC's in several locations, this is a royal PITA.

Do the developers know or care what happens when they release this crap without testing it? Are there ever any consequences for them? Or is it just business as usual over there?

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I am an administrator on all of the computers in my house, it does not work for me.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I've seen it vary from one PC to another. One PC, I was fighting with it for about a half hour, logging out, restarting, etc. Finally I found that you just have to relax. Go into IE and eventually it will come out of hourglass. Just let it sit. Once it comes out of hourglass, it will work for everyone. Oh, forgot to mention that on every PC I set up, I set the administrator's home page to about:blank. So yes, it would hang even on a blank page. Frustrating as hell. But eventually it does come up.

Kudos0

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

We are having the same issue.  With chrome as well as IE.  It (NF) will also sometime also hang up other programs.  We close a program it will disappear, but then when we look at task manager it process is still running.  (This happens occasionally, not all the time).  As soon as we kill the NF.exe SYSTEM task everything clears out and runs instantly.  This is on our Administrator account.

Kudos0

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Yes, I saw that too. Not just IE, but the whole PC slows to a crawl. The problem seems to vary from one PC to the next. I haven't gotten to all of the 30 or 40 PC's yet, but the majority of the ones I've seen, if you just let IE sit it will eventually pull out of it and then everything will be OK. A few PC's I'm still fighting with. Will know more tomorrow.

Thanks, Symantec for making my weekend so enjoyable! Really appreciate it. I'm sure your developers are working overtime too debugging their software. Yeah, right.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I have similar issue, where Firefox-24 hangs up on exit.. Even if I (try to) kill the process in task manager, it never goes away (can't even remove the process). So I have to restart the PC if I want to use Firefox again. Also even when Firefox is up and running, the connection speed is frequently very low... it can take minutes to load a simple page. When I uninstall NF, everything works perfect. I tried installing and uninstalling NF several times but the outcome is always the same. When NF runs. Firefox is slow and hangs up on exit; when NF is unistalled Firefox works as expected...

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Welcome to Symantec's beta testing program. They release the software, and we do the beta testing.

Y'know I used to work for a bank, and if I ever so much as snuck one line of code in without testing it first, not only would I be fired on the spot, I'd also probably be brought up on federal and state charges. So it was drilled into me early on to always test, test, test. But the yahoo's over at Symantec apparently think nothing of repeatedly inflicting this crap on their users without ever so much as saying I'm sorry. Software engineering at its finest.

Well I'm off to try to coax a few more PC's to work. I hope the developers are enjoying their weekend too.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I reckon these internet problems are because once you have Norton Family on your pc all your web requests are all going via semantics server and unfortunately their server is unreliable, hence if your request cant be approved you get blocked.

I am guessing also that both the free and paid for products use the same servers for validation, so both are equally affected.

When the servers are unavailable your laptop is little more than a paperweight.  Norton needs to invest in a network/server system that is fit for purpose or withdraw the product.

It also means if Norton issue a duff update (as it seems to have done with 2.9) you could lose internet access permanently since you wont have internet access to get an update and you cant uninstall without internet access.

The artchitecture of Norton family protection is not very well thought out. Why can't it just use a local database like my anti-virus software?

Not to worry though your isp has been told to implement web filtering so this product hasn't got a future anyway.

I've uninstalled norton familly safety and my children are off my back - bye suckers.

OK the updates have just started to come in. Very noticeable improvement. I can't get rid of .21 soon enough!

So Katie, since we seem to be doing the beta testing for the developers anyway, why not make it official? I've got 40 some odd PC's running NOF, why not shoot me a new version before you release it? I'm sure I can find a PC to test it on.

What I DON'T appreciate is when they release buggy software without any advance notice. I have better things to do than field complaints from all over because of problems with your software. This is not the first gaffe this year from the developers, and I don't know how much longer I'm willing to put up with this. Kindly tell the developers to do some testing the next time, OK? Thanks.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Sadly, the update does not appear to have solved my problem. My mina account (which is not monitored) has just hung several time now whilst browsing. I also notice that the kids accounts are prducing a large number of 'Browser Plugin Disabled' messages too. Much more than before.

Killing the NF process does get around the problem and whether NF is running or not does not bother me whilst I'm browsing, but the whole point is to protect the kids and not me.

Thanks for the update.  You mentioned that the unmonitored account still experiences the internet connectivity issue.  Can you please let us know if the monitored account is still experiencing the internet issue?

Please also let us know what version of Norton Family is on the machine.

What operating system is running on the machine?

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Katie,

OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Home Premium, 6.1.7601 Service pack 1 build 7601.

Norton Family Version: 2.9.0.26

Norton Online Framework Version: 5.0.0.51

Norton Online Datastore Version: 5.0.0.51

Search Signature Version: 2.9.0.21

Social Networking Signrature Version: 2.9.0.21

There is a possibility that the monitored accounts still have the issue, but the kids are so used to rebooting the machine now they do it autmatically and don't tell me, so I'll have to check with them later to be sure. As I mentioned in my previous post I'm certainly getting plenty of disabled browser messages from their accounts

Issue on main (unmonitored) account confirmed as I've just had to kill the NF process this morning (although it is stuborn and keps coming back)!

Yesterday I started the logging we installed on my machine during our session from the previous week to try and trap the issue, but as per then when that logging script is running the problem does not occur! Perhaps there is a clue in that?

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I'm also experiencing these connectivity problems.

I'm using Windows 7 with both unmonitored (adults) and monitored (children) accounts.

Happy Norton Family user with our older laptop. Started having these problems with our new home computer. Updated yesterday both Norton Internet Security and Norton Family to the latest versions (NIS 21.0.2.1, NOF 2.9.0.26). Problems continued. I turned both my kids accounts to unmonitored. Problems still continue, only reboot helps. But reboot is not an option, as our home computer is also used for my work and my wife's hobbies. We have told the kids not to reboot, but wait until adults are back at home and can do the reboot (not to lose any important open stuff). I'm not about to teach my kids how to kill the NF.exe process - and they would not have the permissions for it anyway.

I'm also tired of acting as a BETA tester.

I'm an old Norton Family user and a paying Nortin Internet Security customer and I do not appreciate doing the testing for your developers, spending endless hours resolving these connection problems and rebooting Windows, suffering my wife and kids calling to work requesting reboots, my internet connection cut off in the middle of remote working sessions, etc. I deserve better. So I have uninstalled Norton Family from the Windows 7 home computers and will replace it with K9 or something similar. I'm keeping Norton Family with kids on their Android phones as it works there.

This problem is evidently affecting many users. And is of serious kind (your customers have to lose internet connection, reboot constantly, or unprotect their children). Workarounds and quickfixes do not seem to work. This problem has been around for at least 2,5 months and no fixed release yet. Your customers deserve better.

Conclusion:

Norton Family does not work on Windows machines with unmonitored and monitored accounts. No fixes released. Get rid of it. There are other options on the market.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

Katie,

I had to renew Norton Internet Security on 10 PC's today. All of them are running NOF .26

I noticed that if you exit Internet Explorer for any reason, the window closes but the process hangs around. It's still in Task manager.

The next time you open Internet Explorer, it comes up with a blank window, no menu, no toolbars, nothing in the address bar, no nothing. And this is in an administrator, non-monitored account. And the home page is about:blank.

I try to update Adobe Flash, it says close Internet Explorer. The window is closed. But the process is still there.

I try to renew Norton Internet Security. It gets error 8505, 129 can't communicate with the server.

Once you close Internet Explorer, it hangs all Internet access!

Reboot and everything is fine, until IE is closed again.

This has been going on since the .21 release.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

I have been using Norton family for quite some time and was quite pleased with it. However, a few weeks ago I started to have a problem in that my Internet Explorer was clearly much slower. In addition after a few minutes, it would completely stop working. The exact same thing happened with google Chrome. I could get to the 1st one or 2 websites but within a few minutes, they would both completely freeze. When going to a new page, the IE screens would be blank, mo URL, but there would be no hourglass or sign of any activity. Of note, my e-mail stopped connecting as well. However I could ping Google without any problems.

Well, I can't tell you how many hundreds of hours I spent on this problem over the next two weeks. I downloaded every single malware program and ran it several times; did several complete Norton 360 scans.  Eventually, I replaced my Ethernet card, and then my router to no avail.  Disabled all start up programs, and services:  no improvement.  Opened IE with add-ins: no improvement. Went to every message boards and tried a variety of fixes, including changing the register and network adapter settings.

Only thing that worked was rebooting, then it would only work for a few minutes.

I was extremely close to spending $ 1,500 dollars to buy a new computer (my present computer is 1 year old, and the top of the new dell 8500, Windows 7).

Last resort, went into safe mode, and looked at the event viewer.  Under some of the Warnings, I found:

Faulting application name: NF.exe, version: 12.10.0.42, time stamp: 0x5202e8a2

Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

Exception code: 0xc0000005

Fault offset: 0x00000001

Faulting process id: 0x9dc

Faulting application start time: 0x01cebef89b30c3d8

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Family\Engine\2.9.0.21\NF.exe

Faulting module path: unknown

Report Id: f6b7a4f3-2aeb

So, since it had Norton Family in it, I deleted Norton Family from my computer – and everything was back to normal.

I am only writing to you because the experience was so horrendous.  It nearly crimpled my home consulting business for 2 weeks. For such a benign program to behave like the worse possible malware is really unacceptable.  I personally can’t image using Norton Family in the future regardless. I have been a Norton customer for decades, but need to re-evaluate.

Re: Internet problems with Norton Family

DPreston,

I'm really sorry you had to go through all this.

Symantec, if you are listening, there are some serious quality control issues with the Norton Family development team. The development team needs to stop using your customer's computers for their beta testing. The time for beta testing is before the software is released, not after. DPreston's bad experience shows what happens when you fail to heed this.

The problems with this past release were so blatant, so obvious, so immediately apparent, that I don't think the development team spent 5 minutes testing it. DPreston said he's been using the software for awhile, and so have I. The difference is, he only had his own PC to use as a benchmark, and look at all the trouble he had to go through!! I have 40 PC's running NF, so when I saw just a few going haywire at the same time, I knew immediately it was Norton Family's fault.

There's no excuse for this. Management needs to have a chat with the development team NOW. Please don't let this happen again.

Thank you.

Specifically this problem: from an Admin non-monitored account, IE process does not go away when closed, and Internet access hangs afterward: the problem is fixed. Other issues, haven't tested thoroughly yet, and update hasn't come in on all PC's yet. But so far, so good.

But as usual, I'm having trouble getting the update to come in when I want it to. It has a mind of its own. It comes in when it feels like it. When you say Liveupdate, I would expect it to some in with Start > All Programs> Norton Internet Security > Liveupdate. But it doesn't. Oh dear.

I don't think we're out of the woods yet......

Whilst the original problem of the whole internet connection hanging forever has disappeard, it seems that NF is stil slowing my connection down drastically......and this is on my unmonitored account.

When trying to access apges it sits there for a while......a very long while iin some instances.....before displaying the page. At least it does display the page......eventually.

I know it is NF as when I get a hang if I end the NF*.exe process the page loads immendiately.
