IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Hi -

I'm getting some incorrect blocking on IP addresses/category.  For example, the following came from the alert details page:

Child warned for site category block & did not proceed: http://74.125.226.229/watch?v=Ti3t7MAwaaM&feature=autoplay&list=WL68C7C86152F24171&lf=bf_play&playnext=4 [Uncategorized]

A reverse DNS lookup on this IP shows that it the IP address is owned by Google, which is allowed.

What is wrong here?  Am I doing something wrong?  I thought Norton was doing a reverse lookup on ip....

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

hi - any update on this?  it happens a lot ...

on another note

is there any way to categorize sites that show up as uncategorized?  some central list that can be updated by the community?

for example, for homework my child had to go to http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/

which was blocked as uncategorized.  when you visit the site, it is clearly an educational site.  if i could add this site to a list then maybe someone else would have the same problem

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

wdk40,

If you don’t agree how a website is categorized, please dispute it.

https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/help.fs?action=disputeSiteCategorization

We checked the link you included in your previous post, but it showed as invalid page.  Is it possible that you could send the whole URL to me by email?  You can find my email address at http://community.norton.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/15038

If you allow Uncategorized at Settings -> Web, you won't get the blocking message for the IP address issue.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Ok i sent you an email but did not hear back ...

So here are some examples where i don't think the block should happen;

http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v43/234/131401703561418/app_2_131401703561418_6951.gif - child warned for site category and blocked

- Reverse DNS lookup indicates this is a Facbook site.  Facebook is allowed in my child's profile

Child warned for site category block & did not proceed: http://66.220.158.53[Social Networking]

- Again, reverse DNS indicates this is Facebook.

hope this helps!

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Hi wdk40,

I forwarded the issue to the team and will double check again to see there is an update on this.

Do you have facebook on the allowed list?  Is the Social Networking category allowed to be visited (not blocked) at Settings -> Web?

Thanks,

Katie

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Hi Katie-

Thanks for the reply.

Facebook is allowed.  Not sure about Social Networking though ...

My I misunderstood how this is supposed to work.  My understanding was that I could have 'social networking' sites blocked about certain sites that fall into this category, like Facebook, by clicking on the 'allow this site ....'

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

wdk40,

Right.  If a website is on the allowed list, the site should be allowed to be accessed even though the categories of the website are blocked.

Thanks,

Katie

any status on this?

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

wdk40,

I found a workaround for you while the team is working on the issue.  Please add ip addresses to the allowed list, so you can access these websites.  For example, if you add the ip address http://66.220.158.53 to the allowed list, you will be able to access facebook.com.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Any incoming IP address that are being blocked via your Norton Security program's firewall or by Malwarebytes, are not problems. This is why you install programs like this to begin with. That is, to block the external hacks. It is quite normal for hackers all over the world to be just hunting for valid IP address and to see if that can get past any security ( or to look for lack of security). The URL obtained from that lookup will continue to be associated with an IP. According to what many corporate lawyers have told my colleagues and myself, it is the REGISTRANT who is the ACTUAL OWNER of a Domain Name. Ultimately, it is the registrant's responsibility to safeguard their Domain name. The registrant must find an accredited registrar to process their Domain Name request.

Ronnie

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Not sure I understand your point.  My problem is that when i visit a web page there are many different links to other sites for other pieces of content.  For example, going to Facebook will link in content from other sites, facebook itself and cdns.  It is this outgoing requrests that are being blocked (not incoming traffic).  And I was under the impression that the product did a reverse dns lookup (common procedure for many products like this) to validate the ip.  and in my example when you go to the link you see it is facebook.

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Hi Katie -

thanks.  i've tried that ... Facebook uses a ton of ip addresses and it is tedious to add them.  anyway i can add a range?

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

wdk40,

Could you let us know where (a link or URL) you are trying to access facebook, and it is directed to use an IP address for facebook?

The program currently doesn't support allowing or blocking a range of IP address or wild cards.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Hi - will entering IP address ranges or filters be something that's added to the product soon?

To explain my request, in order for my daughter to access the internet at her school via the school network, I need to allow 4030 (16X255) IP addresses or 16 IP Ranges ("trusted school IPs").  I currently have to disable Online Family for her on this laptop,  for when it is enabled, she has no internet access at the school at all.  The school runs a wifi network and its own internet blocking software (another symantec product I am told).

Hi mxt,

Does it help if you allow the category of Uncategorized at Settings -> Web online?

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

I'll try but it will take a bit.  It's the kids' PC and I'm not always around when they have the problems ... i just get the emails and complaints!

I'd be suprised if I'm the only one with this issue though ....

Re: IP Address being blocked incorrectly?

Hi mxt,

Please provides some details on "I need to allow 4030 (16X255) IP addresses or 16 IP Ranges ("trusted school IPs")".  Do you always have to add a range of the IP addresses or just one of the IP addresses to be able to log onto the school networkWhere do you need to add the IP addresses?  If you feel these are private information, please feel free to send me a private message.

Thanks,

Katie
