Issues with Norton Security Toolbar extension in Chrome

I'm using the Norton Security Toolbar (NST) along with the Norton Identity Safe extensions in Chrome (Version 62.0.3202.75 (Official Build) (64-bit)) on a Windows 10 desktop.

The NST extension consumes a huge amount of memory, often to the point of freezing the browser and requiring a kill/restart. When I look at the Chrome task manager, the NST opens up many different subframes.

In addition, sometimes on restart of Chrome, the NST seems to prevent all of my other tabs from fully reloading...they just keep spinning until I kill the NST...then they stop spinning and I can re-enable the extension and all comes back to semi-normal.

Has anyone else had these issues? Any ideas for why it's happening and whether there's a solution?

Thanks!

Re: Issues with Norton Security Toolbar extension in Chrome

Hello

Have you disabled Fast Startup?

Have you restarted your computer with Fast Startup disabled at least once a day?

Have you tried running Live Update to make sure everything is up date with Norton?

Are the Extensions enabled?

Thanks.

I am having the same issue with Chrome. I don't know a solution other than uninstalling the extension.

This is a real problem and needs to be addressed by Norton.

Hello Phil Norton User

Welcome to the Norton Community Forums.

What operating system and service pack and bit are you using?

Could you please tell us the Norton product you are using and the version number?

The Norton products just came out with a new version today.

This information will be helpful to who ever will help you  with this issue.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Issues with Norton Security Toolbar extension in Chrome

How many browser tabs do you have open? My Chrome task manager seems to list one taskbar subframe for each tab.

It may require a fresh copy of your Norton product. You can do this by downloading and running the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from   www.norton.com/nrnr   Be sure to do this using a Windows Admin account. Be sure you read the Before you Begin section, and run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Re: Issues with Norton Security Toolbar extension in Chrome

My OS is Windows 10 Home Version 10.0.16299 Build 16299

I am using Norton Security Deluxe version 22.11.0.41

@peterweb  I only have 6 tabs open usually at most 10.  I am not seeing your point about the Chrome Task manager. Can you elaborate on your point about seeing frames in the Chrome Task Manager?

Phil

If you click on the 3 dots at the top right of Chrome and click on More Tools, you will see Task Manager. Open that and scroll through the items listed. You should see Extension:Norton Security Toolbar. Under that you will see Subframe:Norton Security Toolbar listed once for each tab you have open. Look down further and you will see each tab listed with the memory used for each.

My point was just that if you have multiple tabs open, In my case I often have 12 -20 open, it can increase the resource use on the system. If you check Windows Task manager, you will also see that Chrome runs a separate process for each tab. Again using system resources. So depending on your system specs, opening many tabs could cause a slowdown of your system.

Re: Issues with Norton Security Toolbar extension in Chrome

Yes, I have done as you described. I have opened the task manager and observed the memory usage for each tab and extension. I noticed the Norton Extension was using memory by a factor of 10 compared to other extension and tabs. So, if i had a resources using 180k memory the Norton Extension was using 1.8 Meg.

I did not see subframes, but I was not aware of it the time. I just saw the memory usage for the Norton Extension.

Re: Issues with Norton Security Toolbar extension in Chrome

Norton is probably going to be using more resources than other extensions because of all the tasks it is responsible for. Safe Web, ID Safe (the older version 1.0.5), Safe Search (even if you have disabled it, it still has to monitor if you try to turn it back on), Shopping Guarantee, and ID Safe settings. It all takes resources.
