Just bought a Norton Core, Should I keep it or return it?

Hello everyone,

I just bought the Norton Core, my old wifi router died.

Should I return the core or keep it?

I set one up for a family member 6 months ago and have had no calls about wifi problems.

Re: Just bought a Norton Core, Should I keep it or return it?

Hello Joey. Although there hasn't been a public announcement (that I am aware of to date) Core is being discontinued per this post by the Core Admin. Questions about what Norton plans to do for Core customers just before end of support have been put forth to the Core team. I have found one possible solution and discussed that here in this post. The Core team is also aware of the suggestion.

Personally, I like Core but do not want to have it become a rubbish container candidate when we can repurpose it. As for you getting a refund or keeping Core that is a decision you would have to base upon your fondness of Core. I am comfortably certain there will not be any additions to the function of Core moving forward to the end of support. However, I will be keeping my Core, HOPING Norton wipes it of its Norton firmware and installs generic firmware similar to my suggestion, which will allow it to be used as any other router for the end user to tailor to our needs. Noting that the app should also be removed for control of Core. That may be something you want to consider as well. Stay tuned to the Core boards for info from Norton regarding what they are going to do short term and before EOS.

Cheers

@SoulAsylum, what is the implication of Norton Core firmware vs. generic firmware?  If I wanted a router that protected me as the Core does, what's the next best solution?

Thanks

Re: Just bought a Norton Core, Should I keep it or return it?

All: I'm spending a few dollars on this as soon as my refund arrives. Just to be ahead of the curve in case Norton allows Core to just become a brick.

For Joey - I agree with bjm_ in the general sense that its not a good long term investment.

David - My suggestion for generic firmware on Core is to allow it to be reused. When Core arrives at end of support there won't be further "subscriptions" available for Core to download firmware and there will be no updates support as well. The app will also remain stuck in whatever form it takes at that time. Both will then not be usable. Personally I had rather have the ability to repurpose Core, with firmware of my choosing that is compatible for general use coupled with something like the Asus router I am looking at as its replacement. The Asus will provide the same protections as Core for the entire network, Core will become an added extra.

I also agree with bjm_.  Return it now while you can. Norton has not given any indication they will do anything to allow the useful use of the unit after EOL.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Hello

Support is supposed to be until the end of Jan. 2021. What support means though is the question?

Thank you everyone, I am returning it.  What a shame that a company as respected as Norton didn't make this product perfect for home use.
