Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

Since installing Norton Internet Security for my new MBP (top of the line i7), I am getting endless kernel panics. They all appear to be coming from the symantec code and it is driving me nuts! I'm getting one for every 6 or so hours of work.

I have checked everything is up to date. I am seeing the same problem with kext as seen in this thread http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-for-Mac/Kernel-Panic-caused-by-Norton-AntiVirus-11-1-Vulnerability/m-p/217702

and I am on the version stated in that thread as solving the issue. I *urgently* need a workaround for this issue - do I turn off the firewall?

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

The attached log is a crash (vs. panic) log and appears to be a different issue from the one discussed on the previous thread.  Are there panic logs as well?  In Console, they would be under Panic Reporter.

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

I think perhaps you mean Diagnostic Reports? There is no Panic Reporter section anywhere in my logs.

Any news on this?

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

We have determined it is a different issue from the IPS panic addressed earlier.  Is it the panic which is occurring every 6 hours, or the crash?  We're not sure if they're related.

I forgot to mention, hopefully disabling the firewall will work around the issue.  If not, please let me know.

Hiya - I never see the crash, only the panic. That said there are quite a few more crash logs than panic logs.

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

Since this is not a known issue, some info about your configuration would be helpful.  If possible, can you do the following:

1. Download GatherSymantecInfo.zip from:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/tools/mactools/GatherSymantecInfo.zip
2. Expand GatherSymantecInfo.zip using Apple’s archive utility (other programs may not expand with proper permissions):
/System/Library/CoreServices/BOMArchiveHelper (OS 10.4)
/System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility (OS 10.5/10.6)
3. In GatherSymantecInfo folder, double-click GatherSymantecInfo.command.
4. When prompted, enter your computer user password.
5. When prompted for a subscription key, simply press return.
6. Attach the generated SymantecInfo.txt file to your reply.

Thanks,

Lee

Sure - I'll do it within the next 24 hours!

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

I did that - I have attached but please note it is a ZIP file not a LOG file. This forum won't let me upload the zip file and the text file is too big (1.6Mb)

The run showed this on the screen:

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

Thanks, sorry about the problems with the attachment.  I will probably amend those instructions for the future.  We'll let you know if we discover anything relevant.

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

As an update, I've noticed a couple version discrepancies, and am researching the IRTool crash.  I hope to have more info tomorrow.

Re: Kernel panic issue *still* not fixed

I verified that the solution to at least some of the issues we see would be to uninstall, then re-install and run LiveUpdate to get the latest version.  If you still have problems after that, let me know.
