Large File copy problem From Win7 to WinXP

I have a network with 18 workstations, 10 are XP Pro SP3, 7 are Win7 Pro and 1 is Vista Business.  When I try to copy large files (60MB) from Win7/Vista to XP machines the copy fails.  I have eliminated networking issues as I connected Win7 machine to Win XP Machine directly to take out the network topology.  Same problem.  I shut of Norton AV 2010 and restart and it says Norton is off but the problem still exists.  I than uninstalled Norton Av 2010 with the Norton Removal tool from a XP machine and the file copy problem is gone.  I than reinstall Norton on the XP machine and do all the liveupdates and the copy issue is still gone.  After a few days the problem comes back.  I did the same procedure again with the same results.  There is no problem with copying between WIN7/Vista machines to other Win7/Vista machines.  The problem is definitely related to Norton AV 2010.  I have no other Virus software installed on any of these machines.  I did try loading Microsoft Security Essentials and there is no problem.  I can even navigate to an XP Machine and copy the file back to the WIN7 machine with no problem.  If I than try to copy back to the XP machine it fails.  I am a long time user of Norton products and want to continue to use Norton AV.  Please advise

Re: Large File copy problem From Win7 to WinXP

I was just reading a similar thread, and I'm really curious about this. I'll ask you the same things I asked in the other thread.

"I'm curious to find out if this behavior changes when you try to access your other computers differently. If you are currently accessing your computers through My Network Places, try accessing it as a mapped network drive (right-click my computer, map network drive). If you are currently accessing your other computers through a mapped network drive, try accessing them through My Network Places. Does the behavior change?

Also, are you running any other security software on your computer? I know you said you have no other AV programs, but any firewalls or anything else? What kinds of network applications are you running?"

Re: Large File copy problem From Win7 to WinXP

Abruzzo,

What one might call an "interesting" problem .... Sorry you have had no reaction yet and since it is a holiday weekend there will be fewer of the Symantec Staff -- names in red -- around than usual but meanwhile there aer some real experts here so hang on please.

I know that it doesn't happen when Norton is not on the XP machine but I do know that there are some unresolved (by Micrsosoft that is) problems between a WIN 7 64 bit system and an XP system when it comes to printing across the network from the 64 bit system to a printer that is attached to the XP system, say by USB -- the 64 bit system refuses to see the printer no matter what tunes you play with installing 64 and 32 bit drivers .... but it disappears if the printer is connected to the network and not to the computer.

So in case it is relevant -- can you confirm if all systems are 32 bit or is it a mix of 64 and 32 bit.?

Is the receiving drive on the XP machine integral or is it an external drive eg USB or sSATA connected?

What are the version IDs of the various Norton installations? This is under Help / About in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn

When you say "XP machine" you say you have 10 of them -- does the problem occur with all of them and are all the above details the same for each of them; if not all can you see and differences with the ones that work and the ones that don't.

If I knew anything useful about networking there are probably some questions I could ask about the setup of that but I don't so I'll leave that to those who do.

TIA

Hugh
