LenovoBrowserGuard contains SearchProtect !

Just sharing some information

Yesterday we started having tons of alerts from Norton firewall signaling an alert of type "System Infected: PUP.SearchProtect Activity", usually related to the install of the doubtful SearchProtect utility, known under different other names.

After searches and scans, no virus report from Norton, nor recently installed apps known to bring SearchProtect.

Looking further, with great surprise I've realized my Lenovo PC had installed (without consent) a new tool named LenovoBrowserGuard... what a nice name for an old known source of troubles.

Of course no automatic uninstall available: had to enter in safe mode, erase the files, and clean the registry by hand.

Since then, no more alert messages from Norton firewall :-)

Re: LenovoBrowserGuard contains SearchProtect !

When I got my Lenovo I was getting a bunch of alerts. I just did a full clean and install of Windows 10 and got rid of all that Lenovo crap and trial junk computer runs fine ever since

Re: LenovoBrowserGuard contains SearchProtect !

Indeed. I got my Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 from a local customer. She had performed a clean factory restore from Windows 8.1 which I gave my log in to and upgraded to Windows 10. Immediately upon installing NSBU and rebooting I got these same "backdoor" PUP notifications. Big pain in the backside to get rid of but used Malwarebytes and solved the issue.

Cheers
