Live Update.

I use Norton Security  Premium, it  does not (always??) update my  Norton  product  automatically; when I manually  run Live Update sometimes after Live Update  has  run it  states a patch  needs to  applied and offers me the  choice of 'apply now'  or 'Later'. If I choose 'apply  now'  it  asks me to close my  browser and when I do it  disconnects me from internet, all task bar items are removed and task bar goes blue, it takes a few minutes 'processing'. Does anyone  know  why (especially   the  disconnects  my  internet  connection  bit) ?.

Re: Live Update.

Hello Elspeth. The behavior is normal, not abnormal. Your Norton product has to write new registry entries into the operating system in order for it to function correctly. That includes browsers. If you do not select "apply now" the patch will install at the next reboot. If you are on Windows 8 or above, you may want to disable "fast startup" so the OS will get a 100% complete data release and a clean reboot. Here is how to do that. Please let us know if this fixes the issue you are seeing.

Cheers

Re: Live Update.

Thank you for your reply  SoulAsylum.  Please  do  not  take  this  as  pedantic nor deliberately  argumentative, I  value and respect  the  voluntary  contributions people like you  make  and  you  may  be  the  only  reason  I  have  stayed with  Norton  for over  10  years  now : it   was  not  the  1•••¾ hours  of  double talk I  got  from  Live Chat  via Jaipur  nor  the  advisor  then the supervisor who both  also   gave  me  40  minutes  combined of even  more  bizarre   double talk via Norton  telephone helpline with  Bombay.

Are you  saying  Norton Security  must  be  ran  manually?

I  can  take on board  it  may  need  to  close  browsers, maybe(?)  even Notepad/task  manager,  but  even  the  internet  connection ?

I  had  Norton  360  for  many  years  and  I  never  noticed  this  behaviour  before, 360  ran  Live Update  automatically,  I  always  thought  360  and Norton Internet  ran  Live  Update  during 'background tasks'  when my  computer  was  idle -  which it  often  is  as  it  is  on  continuously  for  weeks on end -  so as I  seldom  reboot  between  Windows necessary  ~monthly  updates, does this  mean  these  mysterious  'patches'  are  ineffectual until I reboot ?     (No  offence  intended )

As  I  do  not  have 'fast  startup'  enabled on my Windows 8.1 it  has  no  relevance as a fix  to  behaviour  you  said  was  normal.

LiveUpdate does run in the background and depending on your OS will usually be able to apply updates without a reboot. The patches are a different item that do need a system restart, and you are correct in saying that these patches would not be applied until the system restarts. This does not mean your system is unprotected, but some new feature would not be available.

I  can  take on board  it  may  need  to  close  browsers, maybe(?)  even Notepad/task  manager,  but  even  the  internet  connection ?

If there are updates that can affect the firewall or internet protection, then your internet connection would be temporarily be disabled to update the features necessary for your web protection. I have also noticed what you observed with the  task bar items are removed and task bar goes blue. This is Norton calling for a Windows reset of the Explorer functions of Windows to complete the update.

Re: Live Update.

Thanks peterweb !!!  that  reply  was almost  in  real time.

Does anyone know what  makes these 'patches'  different  from other regular Norton updates? (in  my  online research  some claim the 'patches'  are  hotfixes, a term Microsoft used   {uses??}  for some Windows updates)

And, again,  not  trying to be combative peterweb  but  so  we  all can be part  of a learning process, the 'patch' I updated/Apply  now  today in my  other computer did the blue task bar, internet  disconnect, etc.  thing and updated/installed/processed  whatever  without  rebooting  so I  can  only  guess these 'patches'  can vary  considerably and only  certain  variations  require a Windows reboot  ( = restart  computer) ?

Re: Live Update.

Hello again Elspeth. Norton updates do differ in size and scope, for instance. The screenshot below will show a "patch" release to correct the VPN issues users have been seeing of late. NO REBOOT was required. Product upgrade patches are mostly NGC updates which will be seen in the same history details area under Live Update Sessions. MOST but not all these updates DO require and reboot. The automatic live updates are most times small ones related to definitions, whitelists, etc. and do not require restarts. Hope that helps.
