Is Local Vault gone forever?

Hello!

With the dawn of the new Norton's portfolio of products I find myself wondering if it is still possible to have a local vault in Norton Security. From what I gathered the upgrade process (which served as a means of retaining local vaults from older versions) has been dropped and all NS versions must be clean installed, thus forcing the online vault onto each and every one of us.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

Yes, I still have a local ID Safe on two W7 machines.  If you are installing NS or NSwB you can install straight over the top and keep your local vault.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Thx for your answer but what about ID Safe that comes prepackaged with NIS?

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself better but I will try again.

If you have a local vault in NIS or N360 and are going to install Norton Security or Norton Security with Backup and install it straight over NIS or N360 you will keep your local vault.

I hope that was clearer.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Yes, I see what you meant. So it seems nothing has changed in this regard. I just thought the upgrade process was scrapped in NS and there was no way of upgrading from NIS to NS. Thx again.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

The previous upgrade process used the same active key from NIS. That has changed, you need a new NS key to active NS after you upgrade.

Hi Phoneman.

Ref above, If as you say, you update over the top of NIS, when you use the new NS key, do you Lose, or Keep any remaining days on your old NIS key account ?

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

You need to contact Norton Support and ask them to transfer your remaining days to your NS subscription.

Why one fool is following another fool, very simple, because they are stupid and fools. My local vault has disappeared after I installed my new Norton. I think they said no more local vaults, now we following every other fool that makes software so you have to have a cloud vault and put your password every time you start your computer. They don't  give a damn about the consumer, they listen to the geeks and they follow the rest of the fools.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

I had to restore my PC to original factory settings and have reinstalled Norton Internet Security. I've been trying for a couple days now to import my local vault settings into my Norton Internet Security configuration and have had no luck. I just used the Norton Uninstall tool to remove my Norton Internet Security and then reinstalled just in case something got corrupt. Still no luck. Now I find this forum and it looks like I'm not able to have a local vault anymore? That's BS!!! I do not want my login information out on a cloud somewhere where it can possibly be hacked and my login information available to someone else. I only use my logins on my home PC, no where else, it needs to be local. If this is not a possibility anymore I guess I'm done purchasing Norton Internet Security in the future as this was the only reason I purchased this product. I'll contact support tomorrow to verify and hope they have a different answer for me.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

I just thought of something. What if I uninstall again and reinstall using one of the old Norton Internet Security discs that I have. I purchase a new product in the box every year and have years of old discs. If I install an old version I'm guessing that I'll then be able to import my local vault and then upgrade to a new version of Norton Internet Security and will then have my local vault again? If I get no answer here I'll ask Norton Support tomorrow.

A few point that may help us to help you.  As you have set your machine back to OEM.  Have you properly removed any security Trialware that came pre-installed from the factory.   Also, removing Norton with just the NRT is not recommended.  Control Panel Programs uninstall is reommended as not to rip out running Norton processes.

That said....there may still be ways to return your Local Vault.   This is one way here that a few respected members of the Community devised to help users like yourself.
I've retained use of Local Vault on my new W8.1 machine with this procedure.
There is procedure to revert to v19 which was the last version to offer a Local Vault and then establish Local and Upgrade to current version.

Tell us more about your NIS product version number and your Windows machine setup.  As the Holiday posts might be slow coming but, lets explore options to get Local back for you.   Please read link posted.  See if it's doable on your device.  You need to have had an established Local and since you did an OEM the required files are probably not there unless you have another device that has Local Vault.   Please post back progress and requested info.....

EDIT:  Apparently, we were in sync typing.   Yes, if you can go back to v19 that will work.  We can post link for v19 if you need it.  You are able to import once you have an established Local Vault on this machine.    v19 will not work on W8.1.  That's why I requested more info.....

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

If you use the revert to V 19 method, you must have an Export of your ID Safe Data saved in .csv format as the .dat format is not compatible with an Import to v 19.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

I appreciate the prompt responses, thank you. I still had my old PC that has Norton Internet Security version 19.9.1.14. I used this PC last year before moving to my new Windows 7 system. It was Windows Vista.

I copied the folder and 2 files (IDDStor2.dat and IDDStor2.dat.bak) as directed in the link, (after disabling the Norton Product Tamper Protection while coping the file), rebooted my PC and I'm still not able to import my old vault file. When I first set this PC up earlier this year I was able to import the .DAT file to have my local vault. Now when I go into the Norton Internet Security settings the option to import is still not available. If I go to my Internet Browser and click on the "Access Vault", I get a prompt "Sign in or Create an Account". If I go to setting, as stated, the import is not available.

In my position at work I'm a Technology Engineer so I'm pretty computer literate. I believe I'm doing everything correctly according to the directions that was on that Web page.

Since I have a .DAT file, you are stating that version 19 does not support the .DAT file import? Which version do I need to reinstall that will support the .DAT file? I have boxed discs for the versions from 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and a couple that don't have years on them, probably from 2013 and 2014.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

On my W8.1 setup I had to delete the Online Vault that I had created with new NIS install on new machine.  As NIS v21 only supports creation of Online Vault.  My initial attempt at the process failed due to that I had created the Online Vault. So, I was not able to fake out Norton to thinking new machine already has an established Local Vault.  Once, I deleted Online via wrong different password three times and leaving Product Tamper Protection Off until I logged back in.  Then the process went as required.  Took me three iterations but, it did work for me.   As to csv for import.  v19 will only recognize as yank reminded me csv.    Hope this helps and I'm sure yank GURU will Reply .....
It's impossible from this venue to know users knowledge base...and I've never come across a user with your stash.

EDIT: Just wanted to add for those that may come this way.  I was resigned to going  with Online Vault on my new machine.  But, after creating Online. I had one successful access. Subsequent attempts were time outs.  Very frustrating.  I tried the work arounds' posted to these boards and still time outs.  I wanted to use Online for the experience to help members.  I'll stay Local and hope Norton doesn't close the backdoor.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

This is very aggravating. Possibly a difference between my Windows 7 and you W8.1, but when I enter the password to the online vault incorrectly I can not get a prompt to ask to delete my vault. I've never had an online vault configured so I'm not sure why it kind of looks like I did, this is something I always refused to do.

Not sure I'll get to it tonight (if not tonight, I'll get to it tomorrow) but I'll uninstall my current Norton Internet Security and install the disc I have from the 2012 version and see what happens.

Some time ago I worked with Norton support and they had told me that I needed to use the Norton Removal Tool for uninstalling the product and not the Windows Control Panel uninstall program process. Above it looks like you state the opposite and say to use the Windows uninstall process. Is this the preferred way to uninstall? Also you had asked if I removed the trialware that came with the PC, no, I actually activated it using my current license key that I have for it and then upgraded to the newer version. As previously stated, I uninstalled it using the NRT and reinstalled from the Web site hoping to resolve my local vault issue.

Other information about my system, It is an HP Pavilion p6510f, Norton Internet Security version is 21.6.0.32, I'm using Windows 7 SP1, 16 Bit OS,  AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 B93 Processor 2.80 GHZ with 16 GB RAM

Thanks again for the assistance.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

Hi sup68396
Yes, I agree.  Norton Support may point directly to the NRT.  I've had Support sessions that were that rigid.  Members of the Community (not all) tend to prefer Control Panel Programs uninstall as not to rip running processes.  But, there has been dialog as to proper way more than once.  Some go with newer NRT as better than earlier versions and some go with just Programs uninstall as NRT may damage unintended.  It's always a quandary for me what to suggest with Uninstall.   Users do on rare occasion report the unintended.  The NRnR Tool is easier for me to point to...although unintended may ?   So, many variables at play as you know.    Hopefully yank GURU will chime in .... with GURU advice.
EDIT:  As to wrong password.  As I know it.  Three / four different wrong passwords.  Like as if you were trying to use brute force.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

If you are using the NRT, yank has suggested that the correct procedure is to uninstall using Control Panel/Programs and Features, reboot and THEN use the NRT to remove any remaining traces.

That way if reinstalling, you start with a clean install.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

Hi sup68396,

Wow - where to start?

First of all, as a safety precaution, if you still have NIS v 19 installed on an older system, Log into your Vault and Export the ID Safe Data in .csv format (I'd save it to a USB Drive).

Why .csv? ...because it is universally (so to speak) compatible.  This may answer why the .dat formatted Export you had did not work.  The .dat format that is used for the ID Safe Export was changed between the V 19 and V 20 versions of Norton.  The v 19 .dat format is forward compatible, but the v 20 version is not backward compatible.  Who knows why?  I leave that knowledge to the engineers, but know it impacts us users!

Please let us know which way you desire to go in attempting to regain your Local Vault.  You can go back to V 19 and then over the top install V 21, you or you can try elsewhere's suggestion using the IDDStore2 file again as bjm_ provided info in regards to his experience.

There has been much discussion among Guru's and other knowledgeable users in regards to the use of the NRT, I still believe in using it to obtain a "cleaner plate" for the reinstall than just using the Control Panel uninstall.  I also believe only using the NRT does in fact "rip Norton from your system" as the Control Panel uninstall stops the drivers prior to removal.  But that is only my 2¢ - as I said others may disagree - but I know using the NRT while attempting to regain the Local Vault has worked for may users in the past.

Please let us know how things go and if you have any more questions - just ask.

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

No matter how many times I attempted to bring up a prompt to delete the cloud account, I never could get that prompt. I entered many incorrect passwords, shut down my browser and restarted it many times and nothing worked. Now I was attempting this in FireFox so maybe it is something with Firefox and I should have attempted with IE. But I'm still curious as to why Norton thought I had a cloud account when I never did. When I asked for a password hint the system gave me "At 5th Grade". I have no clue what this would have been, I'd never had selected a clue like this. Oh well.

Anyway, I have my local vault back by installing the Norton Internet Security 2012 disc (version 19). After the version 19 install I activated the product and imported my old vault data (dated 05/23/13). Some is out of date but I'm just thrilled that I have it back and most of the accounts are good. Once that was done I then allowed the product to be upgraded to the newest version of NIS and the local vault is still there.

I did decide on using the NRT to uninstall NIS again and it looked to do just fine.

I'm glad I found this forum through a Google search and appreciate everyone's assistance and comments especially since this was on a holiday and I really didn't expect any assistance until at least the next business day.

Thanks again for the expertise assistance, it was very appreciated. Hope you all have a happy new year.

FWIW,  That's in part, some of the exact same sort of rubbish I was encountering a few weeks ago with my main-use online vault - PWs not being accepted followed by hint prompts with hints that I never created. I concluded that either the online (cloud) store was corrupted and somehow cross-linked with other user's account contents or that my account / cloud store area was being actively compromised.  When I saw this happening several times in quick succession on newly created online vaults, I had enough, ergo my decision for total abandonment of online vault usage (for viable content) and reversion back to using local vaults exclusively.  Other than the occasional creation of a superfluous online vault for purpose of testing to determine how an online vault's presence on an account association encourages other odd behaviors of the NTB and IDSafe components - But simply put, I will never again trust an online vault to hold any viable information content...Never!

Cheers!

Thanks !   Confirms my one hour experience with Online.  One hour with Online persuaded me to use the backdoor.  Norton needs to bring back the Local Vault.
I'll use http://keepass.info/  if Norton closes the backdoor.   Thanks for chiming in....

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

@ sup68396,

Glad to hear you got things working to your liking and you are welcome  - that's what we are here for!

@ John,

As you know I have both the Local and Online Vault available for my use.  I have been using the Online Vault almost exclusively (unless troubleshooting/comparing Local Vault problems on here).  I am using NSBU, Win 7 64 bit, and IE 10 (not much FF usage at all) and I have to admit I have never seen the request for a new password creation, new vault creation or incorrect password hint.  Maybe I need to use FF for a day or two - even though I am not having problems on IE.

<EDIT>  I have been using FF for about 30 minutes now and have found it much slower on this forum than IE 10???

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

G'day Yank!

So many different factors, and so many combinations, any of which can "negatively re-season" a previously working mix...  FWIW, I too have (until recently) been almost exclusively using online vaults --  My recent adverse experience was sudden and quite unexpected.  It harkened back to the early days (what? 3 years ago? or was it 4?) of the tribulations of the initial online vault concept launch...

Glad to hear that you have yet to experience the "dark side" of what may happen - and hoping too that you never do.  I'll add that; my recent "testing exploits" re: online vaults have all been seemingly "issue free" as far as apparent viability - though there is strong evidence of adverse interactions re: NTB auto-prompting.

But still, due to the abhorrent online mode behavior I was getting a few weeks ago, I have great difficulty placing any trust (again) in the mechanism.

I assume you can certainly understand...

Best wishes!

John

Re: Is Local Vault gone forever?

Of course I understand your mistrust and I have to admit after almost 3 hours of FF 34.0.5 I have not had any problems -other than Norton Forum  bit slower on FF than my IE 10, other forums seem normal speed.

thanks for the reminder of a few years ago with the advent of the "new improved online vault" (actually "different" could replace "new improved")

Cheers
