LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I've had Norton and Truecrypt together for about a week now and they worked together fine, they both stayed out of each others way.. Yesterday, that changed. No, it might of even started the day before yesterday. Allow me to start there since it might help find out the issue. So, on that day, I downloaded a file, Norton flagged it(WS.Reputation.1) and removed it, I disabled Norton and downloaded it again thinking Norton made a mistake, ran it on VirusTotal.com, and 7 anti-virus programs detected danger(most of them called it a Trojan).and the file stopped being read after  the 7th positive detection. So I deleted it, ran Norton immediately, downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and they both showed no Trogan on the computer. My computer started showing symptoms of a Trojan(slowing down, not being slow to load websites, etc) this was while Norton was doing a full system scan. After the scan came up clean, file thumbnails soon started going blank(they had a blank page icon) and some even vanished all together, like Recycle Bins. Even my Chrome browser stopped loading, it wouldn't even load the settings page. So, I panicked, restarted the system, logged back on and guess what? Norton was gone. It failed to start and wouldn't respond to my request to run. It was showing up on Task manager's list of programs running but not on the list of active programs. 8 or so minutes later, just as I am about to restart, Norton suddenly ran an autofix. Then I restarted.again and everything was back to normal.

Forward to a day later, I try and mount a PNP Truecrypt folder to view a few documents before I leave overseas, and just as I opened the mounted folder and started to scroll, I got a BSOD. The error said "PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR." I thought it was just a weird mistake, so I logged on, and tried again...same error. I then fitted with the settings and tried to get my files out of that Mount but everytime I even tried to move a file an inch, I got the BSOD. I couldn't open the folder after mounting because I'd get a BSOD. I got 8 of them before I gave up and ran a BSOD viewer. They all showed that the driver that caused it was either SRTSP64.SYS or BHDrvx64.sys and it originates in ntoskrnl.exe. The BSOD's also shared the same bug check code of 0x000000ca and parameter 1 of 00000000`00000002.

I elected to then uninstall Norton, and remove the files. It worked, I got no BSOD. So I assumed the issue was over and mounted them again then installed Norton back.

Forward to today, I move the Mount to an old external(formally internal) HDD I found. I encrypted some space on that HDD and attempted to add my files over there to the external drive so I could bring them with me overseas. The moment the files touched that HDD, BSOD! She came back. Same error, same driver, same location. What do I have to do to get Norton to get along with Truecrypt short of uninstalling Norton for a refund? I don't want to do that since I really like Norton but this is getting annoying and I don't want my brand new computer to be damaged by repeated BSOD's.

This desktop computer is only 1.5  weeks out the box, so it can't be the computer.

Hello,

I can see some of you have already received the patch and so far the feedback is positive. For more details, you can read the official announcement here.

I'm wanted to thank you all on behalf of the Norton team for your patience while we were working on this patch. All your feedback was welcomed and will certainly be taken into consideration while we continue to focus on the constant improvement of our services and products.

Finally, I wanted to extend a special thank you to those users who were supportive and understanding of my own interventions here. It certainly is very rewarding to interact with customers who are able to keep up a good and professional relationship with their points of contact regardless of the issues that they are facing.

Hi co-users,
From the murmer and discussions I had with (possibly almost all reds in charge here), there may be a fix at its final stage(s) (as of any tool, it has a lot of stages to be gone through before out to wild) .
I think we will have an official announcement (may be a patch?) related to that in coming days (and a patch before the 'V' day).
Thanks to flo for her involvement in this issue...

Hello,

I'd like to apologise for our delay in providing an update on this issue, which is obviously causing a negative experience for the customers who are impacted.  Thank you very much to those who contacted us and requested that we post on this thread.

There is indeed an issue that we have identified and fixed already and there will be a patch released soon for this. This patch however integrates other changes and improvements, as most do, but we are working to have it ready for release as quickly as possible. I'm unable to give you a specific date according to our usual policies, so we don't give you incorrect expectations in the rare case we need to extend the deadline for any reason, but we do estimate that if everything goes well the update will be coming out soon.

Once more, our apologies for the delay in providing this information. We would like to keep all customers with us as much as possible, but if you feel that it's fair to contact support and explore other avenues of compensation for your dissatisfaction, than you have our complete understanding. Above all, we want customers to be satisfied and we respect their decisions. Note that support can also assist you with temporarily installing NIS or N360 if that's the only workaround that is available.

If you choose to stay with us, which I hope you do, stay in touch with the forum so you are informed of the new patch as soon as it's out. You can subscribe to the Product Announcements blog by using the "Options" menu on top of the page, once you are in the blog page.

I knew Norton cared! They wouldn't leave us helpless and alone. LOL. Now if the problem of backups sets stored with Norton 360 could be deleted AFTER upgrading to Norton Security with Backup, that would be great. It's using up my available space and I've done EVERYTHING with Norton tech support to have it deleted, and nothing. Why should it be so hard just to delete old backup sets?

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I had guessed the fix was taking some time to implement and test before it is released as this has been the normal process for all good software companies. Get it right so it doesn't break something else.

One Norton response a Month ago from Snehansh (Symantec Employee) said they had the fix and would be released when ready.

Finally we hear from LiLiana (Forum Administrator) with a follow up on the status after being contacted by Floplot and I thank LiLiana for doing this.

Why did it take such a PIA to get a response from Norton on this problem.

I am on my HOA Board and our biggest complaint for homeowners is lack of communication.

Even if the news is not what we want to here at least we know they are making progress.

Rant over.

Have a good day and waiting on NS to get bug free so I can upgrade from NIS.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I now do it the legal way and have requested the company which had sold Norton Security to me to provide a failure-free working software version until 30 January 2015. After that date, I am going to claim damages.

To provide you with some background information: I am in the EU, and EU laws do not provide for any commercial sales "as is", but provide for mandatory guarantees, which hit the person who (commercially) sells a product, and not the manufacturer. nd those rules cannot be derogated by any terms and conditions.

Under EU laws, any enterprise which sells a product has to guarantee that it is free of any initial defects for two years from the date of sale; up to six months, the burden of proof lies on the seller. This is an absolute guarantee, no default in person of the seller has to be proven. Of course, this normally relates to the state of the product at the time of sale. Thus, the seller normally is not responsible for the quality of updates, as long as the non-updated version works. However, anti-virus products cannot work without updates, so (this is my legal opinion) the software purchase is a mixed contract, entailing the original product (sales contract) and the the time-limited update service (services contract). Thus, the guarantee extends to the services element of the contract - as the "sales" element dominates the others.

To mitigate the burden of sellers, EU laws provide that the buyer has to expressly require the seller to provide him with a product without any failures until a certain date, which has to be "adequate". I just did this. After that period had elapsed, I could claim damages, and could refuse any further attempt to correct the failure, and I do not depend on the mercy of some foreign software manufacturer.

I do not really bother about the question whether my opinion would also be supported by the European Court of Justice. It is simply that I put some legally relevant pressure on the seller, a very large company, which may then decide on themselves how they value Symantec's service, and the risk to be held responsible for their "some day we might respond" policy.

BTW: The "60 days refund policy" of Symantec is a joke. Well, you can purchase any of their products online, by online payment, by online download. To raise a legally uncertain "claim", you have to print (!) a sheet of paper (!), provide with copies, and mail (!) a letter (!) to Dublin. Why do not simply provide people to book a flight and appear in Dublin in person?

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Could someone tell me which one of the 2 Norton options are causing this issue? I narrowed it down from ALL of Norton down to 2 options: It's either Auto Protect(Under "Real Time Protection") or SONAR.Protection. I am afraid to narrow it down further because I am afraid the next BSOD might be my last(if you know what I mean). It either either one of those two or both of them, but I always turn them both off and I am able to use Truecrypt....until Norton turns them on by itself despite me saying UNTIL RESTART. I hate remediation mode...

Hello Lollicon

I can see that you might have a malware problem now as mentioned in your other thread. If you are turning off Sonor and AutoProtect, then you are opening up your computer to getting attacked. In the mean time, please do get your computer checked out by one of those Forums I mentioned in that Link.

Let's give Liliana a chance and let's see what she will come up with. As you can see from her post, she seems to have some knowledge of this problem and it's possible solution. No one knows when the next patch will start to be given out in the usual way patches are given out. Please give her some time about this.

Reading the website in question, I am absolutely going to request help regarding my possible chrome malware. Since it isn't doing anything other than redirecting one top result per search result, I might wait until I finish using some programs they might ask me to uninstall or disable temporarily(Bittorrent, legal downloads).

As for Auto Protect and SONAR, I disabled it today for 15 minutes to move some things into Truecrypt before I read this post, so if it's malware that spreads beyond chrome, it might be too late to worry about disabling them again in the future. It would still be nice to know which of the two are the BSOD causers for future reference.

Also, please make sure you sign up in the correct part of the site. I wouldn't do any more work or anything as you might be making the malware worse. Once you start with them, please make sure you follow their rules and if you have questions about the scans they want you to do.

Also, please go back in this thread and read again what Liliana said. I think she gave some good news...

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Is there any news on when the update to fix this is going to be released?

I have just returned to using Norton (Security) after having lost patience with it a couple of years ago over Windows 8 issues. I figured that  the teething problems I experienced with Windows 8 would have been resolved by now. I tested with the trial version for a few days before purchasing 10 licences and installing it on several machines. Unfortunately, we use encryption software and one by one the machines all 'bluescreened' starting last weekend. I have wasted 2 (long) days of my life resolving this for several upset users - I had to reformat one machine completely.

Since it appears from this thread that  the problem has been out there for several weeks, I am not sure why it did not manifest itself until I had completed several days of testing but I am now totally fed up and I want to know when it is going to be resolved.

If a fix is there then just release it - NOW - I am frankly incandescent with rage that  a fix has, if the comments in this thread are to be believed, been available for some time before I even had this problem but has not been released yet. Certainly the vendors of the encryption software have been aware of this problem for weeks.

Further, why are your support staff not aware of the problem and still advising to reinstall and update Norton Security - another waste of users time.

I too will be making a formal request for working software within the prescribed time and thereafter seeking compensation. Your admission that a fix is there but not released will be useful evidence so thank you for that  at least.

Hello Symes2011,

I apologise for the inconvenience caused by this issue.

Please allow me to clarify one point: when saying we had a fix, I meant to say that we have identified the problem and its solution, just so those that are affected are reassured we have made progress. However, I did not state that the patch was completed and ready to be released. We put a lot of effort in making sure that we don't release any fixes which haven't passed all tests and quality checks. So, the fix is not ready and will be released as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and, once more, our apologies for this inconvenience.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Just to add that I have experienced the identical “PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR” BSOD crash as soon as my encryption software SafeHouse opens an encrypted volume. This happens on two PCs (a laptop and a desktop) both running Windows8.1 64 bit. The problem hit me on 12-Dec-14 when I upgraded both PCs from Norton Internet Security 2014 by replacing it with Norton Security with backup, Version: 22.1.0.9. Almost immediately I got repeatable BSODs on both PCs. System restore temporarily fixed the problem until Norton reinstalled/re-enabled. I had to resort to an old XP PC to access the data on my encrypted drives.

Up until then I had no problems with SafeHouse, which unlike TrueCrypt is still supported (very well I might add) and fully compatible with Windows 8.1. Disabling the Norton “Antivirus Auto-Protect” stops the problem and the encrypted volume opens OK. but of course that is a completely unsatisfactory way to access and use the encrypted volumes.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

This is beyond a joke now.. I first contacted you and uploaded crash dumps on the 15 Dec. Nearly 2 months and still there is no relief or work around to this bug.

We call support and they can't give us any details. There is no ETA, no nothing! Can't you at least supply the folks that worked hard with support in the early day to get this problem analysed at the very least a binary fix that we could test for you ?  So at the very least we could have some relief.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Hello leebuk,

First of all, thank you for your offering to test

Indeed, we do not provide specific ETA's for reasons I have explained before, but rest assured we are working on this. As I have just mentioned, we are having to make changes, so it's not just a matter of testing. Furthermore, our testing process needs to follow strict procedures before we can test any files in production (so, before we can provide a fix our customers can test on their side). Remember this patch will not just be distributed to a few customers. It will be distributed to all our customers, so we want to make sure we are careful. In the meantime, installing NIS or N360 is a good option and your systems will be fully protected.

In any case I have noted your availability and will certainly be in touch if there is any need for another approach.

Thank you

Put me down as another  unhappy Norton user... As others I get the BSOD when I try and use True Crypt, which was working just fine with Norton Anti-Virus 2013 and 2014.   Renewed virus protection with Norton Security and bang, the Norton program does NOT work as it should and prevents programs from working...and reboots my computer.  It would be one thing if Norton Security were to prevent a program from working with a alert message but Norton Security FORCES A REBOOT, so anything you are currently working on is screwed up as well.  Very bad form NORTON!

Please FIX THIS ASAP Norton.... or loose me as a customer.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Regarding Coolhand's reported work-around for Boxcryptor at https://support.boxcryptor.com/display/BCWINEN/Boxcryptor+for+Windows+-+Manual. I tried this for SafeHouse but it does not work. Although disabling antivirus auto-protect in Norton Security 2015 does allow SafeHouse to open encrypted volumes OK, when you re-enable the antivirus auto-protect Windows 8.1 crashes with the BSOD PNP driver error as soon as you try to open a file on the SafeHouse volume.

I suspect that this may be because SafeHouse works in a slightly different way in that it decrypts and encrypts files on the fly as you open files in the encrypted volume. That is, the volume is not decrypted when you put in your password, just opened for access. This means that if the computer crashes or is otherwise stopped while a SafeHouse volume is open the volume itself is still secure - i.e. there isn't a copy of the volume or files in memory or a scratch disk that can be accessed and it is not open when you restart the computer. My guess is the BSOD crash is happening because Norton clashes with the SafeHouse driver when it tries to run, which it does when initially loading the encrypted volume or when you try to access a file on the volume.

So still waiting on Norton for a solution (after almost two months now).

I have the same PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR. I'm also experiencing other issues such as mouse lag and sound issues on 2 separate computers due to this issue. One of the computers is new. the think that Norton does not like the Livedrive online backup program i have installed which is encrypting the information.

Hello

Don't think we have heard about mouse and sound issues due to the true crypt problem. EDIT: If you are having mouse and sound issues, could you please start a new thread about those issues if it's not related to truecrypt problem. Thank you.

Great, just bought a bundle for 10 devices and am now faced with this fatal error upon using Boxcryptor . Thanks to their support (thumbs up), I could quickly relate it to Norton Security.

Guess I will be opting for a downgrade to NIS.

So any ETA on when this will be fixed? I don't think it's unreasonable for customers to expect some kind of feedback about the ETA when an important bug has been present for over 2 months?

Downgrading temporarily to NIS is fine and all - but, what's Norton proposing for those customers whose NIS license will expire in a few weeks/days? Can't really install Norton Security until this is fixed. Thanks.

If you PM Liliana  from here, you will be advised how to extend your NIS license.
