Is there a way a parent / administrator can enter a web site's URL and see under what category Norton Family rates it, outside of the Norton Family software?
You can use the following tool located at this location:
Rulespace is a company Symantec purchased a while back. We use that service to categorize all urls.
Sr. Director of Engineering
Cloud Services / Norton Family
So I looked up "ultrasurf.us", and it gives me the category "Anonymizer, English".
I do not see that category listed.
What I want to do is block any attempt to circumvent Norton Family with VPN software and the like. Is there a category which would block "Ultrasurf.us" and similar sites? I'm already blocking Web proxies, but Ultrasurf slipped by.
The category is "Web Proxies".
Potentially it slipped by because of HTTPS?
But shouldn't the site be blocked by URL regardless if it's HTTP or HTTPS?
Please check the browser that your child uses to see if the add-ons for Norton Family is enabled. You can find it at
Tools -> Manage Add-ons in IE if IE is being used.
Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions in Firefox if Firefox is being used.
Go to chrome://extensions or More Tools->Extensions in Chrome if Chrome is being used.
When the Norton Family program detects the extension is disabled, the Norton Family program sends an alert to the parent.
The Norton Family program still logs Web activities and also blocks websites when the Norton Family extension is disabled. The disabled functions are
* Safe search on search engine websites with HTTPS
*Video monitoring (for Premier users)
*HTTPS web monitoring
Our engineering team has tested this against all clients and it’s working fine.
There could be a glitch that caused the issue during the time you tested this. Can you please check again to see if you are still seeing the same issue?
Also please use “Update House Rules” option (from the client) and try again, incase if the policy is not the latest. You can do this by clicking Norton Family icon in system tray on the child's Windows PC and selecting "Update House Rules".
