Lost Browser History

Recently NU 16 warned me that “core product files have been modified” and that I should reinstall or update the product. When neither worked, I uninstalled without retaining settings, downloaded a fresh copy and reinstalled to no avail. A day or so later Symantec provided an update that solved the problem. I reported my success with this in this forum, and praised Symantec for the rapid fix. However, later in the day NU reported having cleared my Firefox history, which I have spent several hours trying to recover. While I recognize that the information stored there may be useful to evil-doers and I regularly clear cookies with some exceptions, the usefulness of this browser information in my circumstances far outweighs the privacy concern. Privacy is a concern for me, to be sure, but large companies seem to be tracking my Internet use in any case.

What I missed is that the reinstalled NU was set by default to erase my browser history automatically. I would really, really like it back, and I immediately recovered and saved all erased files on the system to an external drive. However, I cannot find places.sqlite among them, and have located no other method to recover this information. No legitimate software should remove arguably legitimate files by default. Not without permission. If there is a recovery method other than restoring places.sqlite I would very much appreciate knowing about it.

Re: Lost Browser History

Did you try the Recover Lost files option in the NU Recovery Tab?

If you are using a program such as NU, the defaults are often set to provide the most security. I always go through all settings in a program like this, to ensure the settings reflect what I really want out of the program.

"Did you try the Recover Lost files option in the NU Recovery Tab? "

Yes, I recovered everything that was recoverable using NU and saved it to an external drive so that it would not overwrite what I was trying to recover.  I have not been able identify any that are useful to my problem.

" defaults are often set to provide the most security"  But that is situational.  One size does not fit all, and software can easily adapt to fit the user's agenda rather than vice versa just by checking in before doing anything irreversible.  If all one cares about is watching cat videos and Facebook posts, one might just want the developer to make the setup decisions, but apart from temporary files and viruses, etc., nothing should be destroyed by default without the user's explicit permission.  Browser history is an intentional feature not a bug.  Generally I review setup setting for all new software but since this was a re-install that the software itself was requesting, I was not thinking of it as "new".  I have intentionally saved backups of my browser history, but have not made one recently, wherein lies the problem.

Re: Lost Browser History

I'll leave this for others to suggest a recovery method. If the NU recovery did not recover the file you are looking for, it must be your bad luck that it was already overwritten.

When you did the recovery, did you even see the file you are looking for? It should at least have been listed, even if the status was unrecoverable.

Which browser are you using? Are you sure you are looking for the right file name?

Re: Lost Browser History

NU don't delete SQLite file which you mentioned and NU don't support to recover browser history files. History will be cleaned up as part of cleaning browser history.
