Mail Administrator emails

Please help! I have received about 6,000 of these over the past couple of days with 'Mail System Error - Returned Mail' messages and they are still coming despite setting up filters to remove them to my spam folder and also changing my password and security questions with my email provider. I am using Outlook 2016 and have an @virginmnedia email address. I am also receiving abusive emails from strangers asking why I am spamming them, so emails are obviously going to them without my knowledge or authorisation. I have tried the Virgin Media forum without much success - they told me to change passwords and either live with it or change my email address but this is not an option! I am not losing my email address! There must be a way to stop these! Norton doesn't stop them from coming in - I just set up filters in Outlook to move them to spam. It is not solving the problem. Please can anything be done to stop these? It is driving me mad and upsetting people! Thank you.

Re: Mail Administrator emails

You are the victim of email address spoofing: A spammer is putting your email address in the "From" field of the messages they are sending.  You are getting the undeliverable message bouncebacks as well as irate replies from recipients.  And no, there really isn't anything you can do about this.  The good news is that most spammers will only use a particular spoofed address for a short time before moving on to a different one.  So the situation should be self-limiting.  Changing your password won't help because in most cases, email spoofing does not involve any compromise of your email account - you have probably not been hacked.  Unfortunately, it is true that the only way to stop this immediately would be to abandon your email address because you have absolutely no control over the spammer's use of your address.

Re: Mail Administrator emails

Thank you for your reply but I really can't understand why someone would want to do this?? It doesn't make any sense!!! And why can't it be investigated where these mails are coming from and get the idiot stopped? It's just so frustrating! I've had this email address for years, it is my name and I am loathe to lose it! But thanks again for explaining the situation - it beggars belief that anyone can get any satisfaction or indeed gain from doing this?? :-(

Re: Mail Administrator emails

A spammer does not want to use their own email address. Too easy to track. So they spoof the sender's address. They can find this from many online sources, without hacking anything.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
