Memory

I guess I don't understand memory like I thought  I did. I bought this computer several years ago and purchased 1.5T of memory to contain all the photos and documents we were saving. Then a few days ago I got a notice that I was out of memory and had the option of buing more.   Someone please explain what the 1.5T I originally purchased is used for? I checked and my remaining amount is 1T. Why can't any excess data be stored there? What is the best solution?

You are confusing memory and hard drive capacity. The 1.5 Tb refers to hard drive capacity. The memory message you are seeing is the internal Random Access Memory, RAM, that is on the motherboard of your computer. If you are getting an out of memory message, you could have too many programs open at the same time.

Try restarting your computer to clear out all memory. Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not Shutdown and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. If that does not help, it could be that your system is older and may benefit from an upgrade to your RAM.

That "out of memory, buy more" notice sounds kind of weird.  Windows will warn if memory gets low, but I don't know that it offers to sell you more.  And if it were a hard drive issue, you would get a Windows warning about low disk space.

I think there are two possibilities:  First, it actually sounds like you might have bought a subscription to an online backup service and that you have reached the limit of the storage space that you purchased.  Or, it may be that you saw a pop-up on a website that tried to scare you into buying more memory from them that you don't actually need.  Would it be possible to provide the precise wording of the message you saw?

I think this customer is seeing a message from NORTON saying there is very little memory left on the computer.

I get the same message, but I know it is about RAM not disc drive space.

Last June there was a Norton Utilities advertising popup that was erroneously alerting to low memory situations, but I think that issue has been resolved.  Still, a Norton Utilities ad is a possibility.
