Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

Okay - So we're now on the new messaging board beastie...

I've managed to locate all the items I've been tracking and update their shortcuts - but so far I can't seem to figure out how to set the message threads listing/sorting/display order to list by "most recent reply date".  Selecting "Sort / Date" seems to toggle between ascending/descending order - but only based on the original message/thread creation date - not the last (most recent) reply within the thread.

Obviously I'm missing setting it somewhere...

So can someone kindly point me to the appropriate setting?

Thanks,

John

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

I encountered the same problem. In one instance, the page appears divided half-and-half with message dates descending in one of the halves and ascending in the other half of the same page... It's definitely confusing, but as you say, I admit I may be missing something somewhere.

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

The date sort order was set to the date of the first post in the thread.  I believe that the team are now in the process of changing it to that of the most recent post in the thread.  Watch this space and keep your fingers crossed.

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

Another gripe (of sorts)...

If you are lucky enough in managing to re-find a particular thread that you've lost track of due to this "odd ball" sorting methodology, then you'll also find that the postings within many of these threads are no longer in any (sort of) chronological order... More specifically, I'm unable to make any sense out of how the reply postings are being listed - they just appear to be purely randomized...

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

I posted one link here where the date order is just short of purely random... But I understand my message is being assessed by the administration:

"Your comment has been queued for review by site administrators and will be published after approval."

So, please be patient. It should be released sometime soon.

Hi avjohnnie.

Well spotted!  This has been reported to the powers that be, but I am sure they would like some more references to check out so if you could post a couple of links to un-ordered threads here or send them by PM or email to Tony_Weiss, I'm sure he would be grateful.  If he is not blame me.

LinYu2:

Thanks for the assist...  I'd lost track of this thread - gosh, I wonder how that possibly could happen? - but your pick is an excellent example of the problem I'm constantly bumping into while attempting to navigate this abomination. If this is to be the "new normal" I'd expect most users to give up trying to use this "beastly bit of rubbish" for their support requirements. Some of the "more hotly debated" threads have been known to have 100's of response entries - having to repeatedly re-read through a miss-moshed thread's entire pot-full of such morass would put any reasonable person off any hopes they may have held for acquiring even a modicum of support assistance.

Andmike:

Do you feel that the link provided by LinYu2 is enough evidence or do you believe the powers-on-high require additional linkages - after all, all they really need do is attempt to read a few threads once in a while whereby they'd surly attain this revelation...

Kind regards,

John

John they do not require any more evidence.

As far as I am aware they recognise the issue and are trying to deal with it along with all the other issues.

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

The same company that brought us this POORLY DESIGNED and UNTESTED new forum is about to come out with a set of new products (on Sept 23) to replace NAV, NIS, and N360.

This does not give me very much confidence in the new products.

How can a company with the resources that Symantec has roll out such a POOR forum replacement?

Long load times for pages, threads with posts that are randomly sorted, thread lists that are sorted by thread creation (not by last post), posts that take forever to show up in the thread list, users with bookmarks to threads are left searching for where to find those threads in the new forum, etc, etc.

VERY VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!

Symantec's management should be ashamed!!!!!!

Symantec's management should be ashamed!!!!!!

Any suggestions and criticisms are always well come to anyone as long as they remain in terms of a civil conversation.

That said, I agree that there are many things that still don't work and need to be revised asap.

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

All right, Sandro, it certainly is like you say it. I have been also trying to do my part, in my own simple way. On the other hand, one must expect (and Symantec certainly expects it) that each day that goes on with no visible progress (it's going to be a week...) the more people will start losing patience or quit keeping faith on anything good coming their way soon. It's  being said that Symantec has a "policy of silence", so to speak. Great, they are entitled to establish and follow all the policies they deem best for them. But are the customers/users obligated to keep quiet or accepting all that comes their way without a a word of civilized protest?... I'm sure we both agree on the answer...

Cheers!

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

With the release of any new/major product(s) comes an influx of customer's questions, comments, concerns, issues, etc.

Symantec is about to release new products (Norton Security) that will replace NAV, NIS, and N360.

Surely they expect a large influx in customer posts here in these forums.

Yet just before this major product release, Symantec chooses to roll out new forums that are full of BUGs and design problems!!!!!

Why not slip the rollout date of the forum change until well after the influx of Norton Security posts have subsided (giving those who were fixing bugs in the new forum more time to get it right).

Either that (the decision to roll out these new forums just before the release of Norton Security) is very poor judgement on the part of Symantec's management, or Symantec really does not care about customer satisfaction!

I suspect contractual arrangements prompted the premature change of forum platform.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

>I suspect contractual arrangements prompted the premature change of forum platform.

Perhaps ... but someone in Symantec's management chose to execute a contract (for forum rollout) with a deadline that was just a week away from a planned major product release ... or perhaps someone chose a date for the planned product release that was just a week after the timeframe when a new forum would be rolled out .... or perhaps whomever planned the forum rollout deadline and the new product release deadline did not talk to each other.

In any of those cases, Symantec's management should have known better !!!

I wonder if the software being used to run the new forum was outsourced and went to the lowest bidder (which is not necessarily a bad thing as long as someone properly manages the contract, and proper performance metrics and penalties are well defined).

Bottom line is that rather than slip the deadline, Symantec chose to roll out a forum that was not ready for prime time and we customers must now deal with poor performance, poor design, and outright bugs.

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

LinYu2, that is correct and I agree, but now that everything has been decided and done (hastily) by Symantec, the purpose of our protests and/or suggestions should remain the same as what we had in the previous forum platform, which is contributing to help and suggest to get to have the new Forum functional and intuitive for anyone, staying smart guys as we've always been in the past.

Re: Message Thread Sorting/Display Order?

As of today (9/23/2014) this particular "Date Sorting Issue" seems to have been addressed and rectified ...  Many Thanks to Tony for gett'n 'er done!

If you're not yet "seeing" this change (or not yet in all Forums you use), try clicking the "Date" sort selector a couple of times (in each Forum)  - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Kind regards (and Kudos to Tony!  ),

John

Yep, looks like it's sorting the way that we want it. Thanks avjohnnie for confirming.
