Microsoft "testing new features" forcing customers onto their brands

One can only hope, these idiotic additions aren't included in the next release of Windows 11. I want my browser of choice, one that is secure and doesn't scrape data for the benefit of any company that doesn't indulge its true nature for doing so other than under the guise of making their product better for the consumer. BING is as bad a search engine as it gets as well. Microsoft forces you to see ONLY their tagged results. Windows 11 has begun the path of the former Windows Vista. Dead in the road. I believe the statement here is "if its not broken stop trying to fix it". Just make the OS work properly and secure. Isn't security what Win 11 was supposed to be about in the first place? Missing something I am? My next step is a complete wipe of my factory hard drive and leave it that way. Clean install of Windows 10 on my new SSD and call it a day.

Re: Microsoft "testing new features" forcing customers onto their brands

Some people I know in another Forum would say: "Go Linux" .... or even "Go MAC"

But I'm so old I was using a desktop computer before they really existed (HP9845) ! and so I'll hope to stay with my present working W10

I hope Win12 is released and a better OS than Win11 before Win10 is EOL other wise I'll install Linux.

Re: Microsoft "testing new features" forcing customers onto their brands

Hi SoulAsylum:

I recall reading The Verge's Dec 2021 article Microsoft Backtracks on Windows 11’s Controversial Default Browser Changes about how MS was forced to make it easier to change default browsers in Win 11 (good news for a Firefox user like myself).  Hopefully there will be enough pushback from folks in the Win 11 Insiders program that MS will be forced to allow this new "Desktop Search Box" feature to honour the user's default browser and search engine.

According to the BleepingComputer article Microsoft Tests New Windows 11 Desktop Search That Only Works with Edge you referenced this Desktop Search Box can be easily disabled (at least for now), so that's one more piece of MS bloat I'll be turning off if it ever gets ported to Win 10.

Indeed everyone!! At least this is about and insider build and testing. Microsoft has made it clear with Windows 11, they do not want you to upgrade your OS to Windows 11, they don't make money doing so. They also want to scrape your data with BING and Edge. It has been about purchasing a new device, one that meets their demands even when they cannot get the OS right. Nor secured.

The article raises a good point:  How many of us sit there looking at our desktop?  How useful is desktop search anyway, really?  I don't know about you, but 99% of the time I would have to close or minimize my browser to use it, so what's the point?

After thinking about this, isn't this "Desktop Search Box" being tested in Win 11 essentially the same feature as the web search from the taskbar Search box in Win 10?  I don't use this web search in Win 10 because it defaults to Bing / MS Edge, but I tested today by doing a web search for "Galileo" and the top Bing search result was for a tights and swimwear shop.

Unless you're a Bing / MS Edge enthusiast I don't know why you would run a web search this way in Win 10, but at least you can reach it from the taskbar instead of having to show the desktop.

Using taskbar search, Opera GX and Google set as default respectively.
