Minecraft on iOS running Norton Family

I have some difficulty in running Minecraft on my child's iPad 10.5, running iOS 13.2.

Profile and VPN installation could be done easily without issue. But I have some difficulty with House Rules and Web supervision restrictions. For some reason, when supervision is ON, the Minecraft app loads very slowly. Signing into the Microsoft Account somehow crashes the app. The new "marketplace" feature is inaccessible. I have tried to permit various websites "account.microsoft.com", "login.live.com", "storage.live.com" but still the app crashes, so I think something times-out or blocks the full login and creates problems for minecraft to run properly. I feel that there are other weblinks that minecraft still taps into but is not reported by Norton family, no alert is receive and so no intervention can be done.

I don't think it is an issue with the Xbox live account because when the account runs on an un-monitored device, everything works.

What is more strange with this issue, is I have changed this setting for web supervision from "block" to "warn" and temporarily I could get Minecraft and its marketplace feature to run. But after a few hours, the old setting got reverted? And I am experiencing login problems again even though the setting stays on "warn".

To add on, I attempted to disable the VPN and I found that with the VPN disabled, minecraft can load without issue including marketplace. I didn’t have to remove the profile installed just needed to disconnect the VPN. I believe some backend API is being blocked by the VPN. Other games like Roblox run without issue.

Re: Minecraft on iOS running Norton Family

Hi @M-Michelle,

We installed Minecraft and tested with Norton Family having VPN enabled and in disabled state. We observed the same issue that you have reported as well.

Upon further analysis, we came across this link from Minecraft: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-54465 that you might want to take a look. Based on this link, it appears that Minecraft crashes and does not work as expected when a parental control product/VPN is enabled on the device.

The workaround suggested by them in the given link is as follows:

  • Make sure you are connected to a secure wifi, with no network parental controls or VPNs
  • Try logging out of the Xbox Live account

So, please disable VPN when you have a need to play this game.

Thanks and Regards,
Andrew.
