Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

I have Microsoft Office 2016 and use Outlook.  I recently changed my three email addresses from POP to IMAP.  Now, when I send an email I do not get the yellow Progress Indicator box displayed in the bottom right of the screen although "Display Progress Indicator" is checked in settings. Before I made the changes the yellow box displayed correctly.  Any thoughts please?

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Many thanks.  The first link relates to Outlook 2007 and I have Outlook 2016 but I can't find a Status Bar option in View anyway.

The second link relates to the Send/Receive window that I can see. My problem is that the yellow Norton scan box does not appear when I send an email.

@Judesman,

Then, have you enabled "Email Antivirus Scan" in "Scans & Risks"?

Thx~

Yes I have, in fact I haven't changed any of my original settings in Norton.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

@Judesman,

Then, enabling "Display progress indicator" should fix your 'issue' here. By default, that option is not checked.

To do so, hit the Configure link when you locate said "Email Scan" > look into the below highlighted option at the bottom of that window > U'll be good 2 go.

Hit Apply, reboot and check/test later.

Thx~

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Thank you very much but I have checked all of this and all the appropriate boxes are checked.  I have just emailed two large files and the Norton progress box did not appear.  All very odd.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Then... back up yr personal stuff, run Norton Remove and Reinstall tool as the admin user > update yr Norton via LiveUpdate > reboot when ready.

If yr issue persists, plz contact Norton Support.

Thx and luck~ :)

Thank you. From my experience Remove and Reinstall would be a very last resort.  I will contact Norton Support.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

POP3 and IMAP are incoming protocols and would not have anything to do with outgoing scans.  Did you also perhaps make any change to SMTP, such as changing the port number?

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

These changes were made for me, I am not much of a techy.  I believe the port numbers were changed.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Norton can only scan outgoing port 25.  Most email service providers these days require that you use an encrypted port such as 465 or 587, which Norton is unable to monitor.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Outgoing scans do nothing to protect you, they only prevent you from unintentionally sending malicious files to your recipients.  That may have been a problem back in 1980, but just about everyone these days has an antivirus solution.  And if they don't, that really isn't your fault, is it?

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Yes my two BT email addresses use Port 465 and my Outlook email uses Microsoft Exchange. So my outgoing mail is not being scanned.  I would have thought that this is something that Norton needs to put right. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

SendOfJive I have just seen your contribution to a thread dated December 2012 here: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/issue-protected-ports That seems to explain it all so thank you.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Hi Judesman,

Glad to help sort it out.  Really, email scanning is a vestige from an earlier time.  It is a redundant feature that remains, largely because people have come to expect to see it included in their antivirus program.  You and your recipients can get along just fine without it.

Outlook is so yesterday. Web based email is faster and more reliable.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Hello

Outlook can use the same web based email accounts. You can open up one program and all your emails from different web based accounts are all in one place and appear quicker than you can read the emails. Don't have to go to each account and then sign into them each time.

You will say that my whole computer is so yesterday also since I'm using Win 7 Pro.

Thanks.

Nothing wrong with Windows 7 Pro. But if you mainly use Outlook then you stuck to that on your pc. Been using Gmail for 10 years. I can lo into any pc in the entire world and presto...................there is my email. Along with my Gmail app on my iPhone.

There are situations that still require Outlook, regardless of what day it is.

Not really. My company uses Microsoft 365. We all have Outlook but you mainly check your email by logging into Microsoft 365 website. Unless you have your own domain no one needs Outlook. Especially on Windows 10. That is like saying everyone needs Microsoft Word or Excel. So very untrue.

Perhaps you should try some different jobs with different companies.  I never said everyone needs Outlook, I said there are still situations that require it.  I am not talking about just checking your email.  I am talking about specialized uses for Outlook where webmail just doesn't cut it.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Only cases where web based email will not cut it is if you have your own domain or a company has it's own domain. My company use to use Exchange via our servers. But years ago we migrated to Microsoft 365 for reliability and ease of access. Home users do not need Outlook especially with Windows 10 Mail app. Why spend hundreds of dollars on an Office suite when there are tons of free alternatives. Mainly people use Microsoft Office cause that is all they know and think it is the only way to have a word document. You won't believe how many people ask me about new computers and say "Well I need Office". I say "No one needs Office. You just prefer it".

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Or you have 4 or 5 email accounts and want to be able to check them all without logging into 4 or 5 different web sites. A local email client like Outlook can easily consolidate that..

Also if you are  looking for an older email and you do not have internet available, you will be able to find in in a local client. The same goes for looking up contact info if you do not have internet.

That is just silly.  Of course there are people who need Office.  Not everyone.  Maybe not you.  From that, you conclude that everyone can get by with a less comprehensive substitute product?  Not at all true.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

No home user needs office. My son in college does not need office. That is why there is Google Docs and Microsoft Office Online. Who in the world has 4-5 email addresses? Most companies have gotten away from sever based Outlook. I work for a very large company and they moved years ago. There is also Google Docs for businesses. Been working on pc's for over 12 years now. Never seen a case where someone "Needs Microsoft Office".

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

Hello

I had 4 different email accounts, all with different log ins. Now I am down to 3, all different log ins. I open up my Outlook and immediately, all my emails from the 3 accounts are there. I am not a business. Every one is an individual and wants to do things the way they want to.do it as long as it works.. Every one has computer problems at some time. Computer programs can't work perfectly all the time.  Computers don't work perfectly 100 % of the time.

Never say never is my motto  Something always happens to mess up never.

Thanks.

Re: Missing Progress Indicator in Office Outlook

We seem to have lost the way on this thread. I like Office Outlook because I am used to it.  I am what you might call a Silver Surfer and do not like change. Like a car when I turn on my computer I expect it to go and not present me with problems.

I am just grateful that my original question was answered so comprehensively and I did not go down the reinstall route.  So thank you.

Change is something we all have to get use to or be left behind. Who is your email provider anyhow?

If that was the case peter we would all still be using Windows 98 or XP.
