Monthly Full System Scan Settings - Help Needed!

Hello,

I have NIS V. 21.1.0.18 installed and was wondering if anyone out there could tell me what their settings are to get it to do a full system scan on a monthly basis? I don't want to set it up to scan at a specific date or time, just to run at a monthly interval.

When I had the previous version installed it ran OK and when I upgraded to the new 2014 suite I did the over the top method and would have hoped it had saved my previous settings. My last Full scan was on the 6 Oct and since then I have had the pc idle loads of times for it to have kicked in. Only noticed today it hadn't completed a full scan.

Regards.

I'm not sure if this will help since I have Norton 360 but with 360, you can access the Scan Scheduler with this path:

- Click on the "Tasks" selection at the top of the console.

- Click the "Run Scans" selection from within the Tasks options.  This won't start a scan but will allow you to access the scheduler setup.

- Click on the "Custom Scan" button.  This will access the Scheduler and Scan Definitions screen.

- Click on the "Edit Scan" pencil icon to edit specific items.

Then you can set up your Full System Scan as Monthly, etc.

Re: Monthly Full System Scan Settings - Help Needed!

Hi Scoop8,

Thanks for your reply but it doesn't help unfortunately!

I have mine set to scan at 'Specific time Interval' which is 30 days. This should be good to go as it was my saved settings from my previous version of NIS.

If I go down the path you suggested then I have to set a date, time etc which is not what I want. All I want it to do is run the scan after the 30 days like it used to, but which is not happening now?

Regards.

Oh ok.  Sorry.  I've never used the Specific Time setting, interesting.  I might try that option soon.

Check you have Only at Idle time checked. Also if this is a laptop, make sure it is plugged in and the option for Only on AC power is checked. You might also want to make sure Prevent Standby is checked to make sure the scan can complete when it starts.

I these are the settings you already have, try unchecking all the items, click Apply then restart your computer. Then go back and reset the settings as I suggested, click Apply and restart the computer once more. There may have been a setting that got corrupted when you did the upgrade.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Monthly Full System Scan Settings - Help Needed!

Hi peterweb,

I did as you suggested, I have a desktop pc. The only thing I didn't have checked was the 'Prevent Standby' so I did that.

Now, I have just noticed that today 10 tracking cookies were deleted earlier by a quick scan which I found looking at the 'Norton Tasks'.  Normally this is only done if you manually do a quick scan, which I didn't do or an auto full scan which it didn't do either?

Do we have a function where we can run an auto fix or something like that for the product? I seem to remember reading a while ago someone doing this but I can't find anything.

Regards

Just had another look so please disregard the auto fix question as I found it and it says all is correct!

!

The cookies being found during a scan should be found regardless of how the scan is initiated.

Your changing the setting back and forth for scanning at Idle Time many have been the one that was giving trouble. Now you may have to wait for the 30 days to see if the automatic full system scan runs.

These full system scans are not as important these days, as your system receives a quick scan any time new malware definitions are downloaded by LiveUpdate. Also, any files not scanned in the quick scan will be caught by the AutoProtect and Sonar functions when the file is accessed.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Monthly Full System Scan Settings - Help Needed!

brummie, to save myself grief, I just run a full scan manually whenever I want, usually weekly. It runs in the background, while I'm doing other things.....A couple of button presses in the UI, and it's done !....

That's good info.  I knowingly over-do my nightly full scans but HDD wear isn't a concern with a couple of spare drives available and I also like to see daily results.

I'd probably not run daily scans if I couldn't run them unattended and using the Task Scheduler to wake the PC before the scan begins.

Good idea.  I might switch to that approach and try that during my 2nd year with Norton which negins next month.

Hi Scoop8. Yep, my philosophy is KISS ! There are lots of option in Norton, and sometimes we can just overthink what needs to be done, in terms of keeping our systems safe.

Re: Monthly Full System Scan Settings - Help Needed!

Hi all,

Many thanks for the other replies to which I mostly agree with! I changed my weekly full scan to monthly only last year, in fact I remember a Symantec employee saying on these forums that with the level of protection we have there isn't a need for full scans anymore either. However, it was only because I noticed something wasn't happening that should be, that I looked into it. Looking at my son's desktop next door (Same machine type and setup, his one setting was different to mine and his appears ok regards this issue. (Has the 'Prevent Standby' checked) I will have to wait a month to see if this is resolved or not.

Regards all.

Please check to see if the Full System Scan is actually enabled:

Open NIS > Scan Now > Computer Scan > Custom Scan

Make sure the following checkbox is ticked (On):

Re: Monthly Full System Scan Settings - Help Needed!

Hi elsewhere,

I looked and it was checked as you show it to be.

I think I am going to have to uninstall this because earlier, just to see what is going on I enabled 'Norton Tasks', a bit later a quick scan and then full scan showed, great I thought, all is well, wrong! It kept showing full scan for nearly 2 hours and the quick scan showed twice? This is clearly not right as my full scans before were usually under 1 hour.

If anyone out there can give me a quick reminder about reinstalling, do I need to use NRT as I think this product of mine is corrupted somehow.

elsewhere's image does not show the scan as checked. If yours looks like the image, you have to add the check to the scan.

As to reinstalling...I'm not sure you need to, but if you want to clean up your installation you should start with the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool.

Download the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrnr
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility.
Run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool.
Reboot.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
