MSCONFIG questions

While I was looking into a question I was having with Norton Ghost 14, I found a couple of items in my MSCONFIG program that I questioned and am here asking for advice.

In the "Startup" section, there are two Cloaker items listed.  They are in the hp\bin folder and the items are res and cmdcons.  Are these items anything to get concerned about?  I guess the term "Cloaker" makes me think of something nasty hidden somewhere.

The second question, in the "Services" section, Norton Internet Security is checked and shows it is running but the manufacturer shows up as "Unknown" ?  Norton Ghost also shows it is running but it shows Symantec Corporation as the manufacturer.  Is Symantec not proud of NIS?

  No problems, just questions..

Re: MSCONFIG questions

Cloaker is an HP / Compaq program used to help configure your system on boot up.  It has been discussed here before.

On the Services question, mine shows up there alright but if everything is running and registered correctly then you do not need to worry about this.

Re: MSCONFIG questions

dbrisendine,  thanks for the reply and information.  I did a forum search for "Cloaker" and it didn't bring up any information.  Now it brings up two items, your reply and my question.  Where did you find the "Cloaker" link?

I apologize for that to you.  I thought I had answered that on the forum but it may have been in a PM some months ago.  Cloaker is a program that HP / Compaq uses to run some OEM configuration programs at start up of the system.  It ensures that, even if the user installs something that may change the system, the OEM settings will hold true.

There is nothing wrong with file or what it does.  Just the name sounds a little malicious that's all.

No problem, I thought I was looking up information incorrectly.  Thanks again for the information about "Cloaker"..
