Multiple Issues with Core

Issues:

1.  2.4 Ghz connections seldom work.  Smart Plugs cannot connect.  Android phone set to 2.4 Ghz could not detect router.  A laptop using 2.4 Ghz keeps losing connection to router.

2.  iPhone, tablet and android phone lose internet connection while laptops and desktops still can access internet.  I am connected with a laptop using 5 Ghz to write this, while I cannot access the internet with other devices to use Core app.  Laptop using 2.4 GHz is offline.

3.  Nucleus video intercom devices are quarantined.  Have a case number for this, but nothing has been resolved.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

Hello CMS. To better assist you please allow me to ask for these basic things:

-What antiviral solution are you using? If it is Norton Core Security package that came with the Core is the account current and active? If not certain features of Core will no longer be available or function.

-What OS are you using? What is the current firmware version on the Core as seen in the Core app?

-What smartphone app are you using? Android or iOS? What is the app version? You have tags set for both on this thread which can be confusing.

-Who is your ISP provider and what is your current setup? Do you have TV & VOIP services with your ISP which must use your ISP device? If so what is that device name and exact model. Is wifi still enabled on your ISP device? Do you have wifi enabled for your Ethernet (wired) connected devices on the Core? Do you have parental controls set for any devices and are they accurately grouped? What is your current DPI setting (Deep Packet Inspection)? What is your current DNS setting? There are 4 to choose from.

-All your normal devices such as laptops, PC, tablets, iOT devices should be connected to the 2.4 GHz network due to the limitations within the wireless devices within them. Most won't properly use 5.0GHz. Streaming devices should use the 5.0 network.

- Regarding your Nucleus video intercom setup. Are they connecting to the Core or ISP wifi? Do you have UPnP set on the core AND port forwarding set for those devices individually? Do they have a static IP assignment within the Core app?

A screenshot of what you are seeing the Core app tell you regarding why these are quarantined will help tremendously. Here is how to post a screenshot to the forums : https://community.norton.com/en/forums/how-post-image-forums-0

Looking forward to assisting you further!!

Cheers

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

Norton Core Security

Firmware version 17128_223

Have app on both an iPhone and a Android phone.  iPhone app version is 1.27.  Cannot connect to Core with the Android phone.

Comcast with only TV and Internet.  No VOIP.  No ISP router.

Cable modem is Arris 6141.  Currently indicates Core connect to Internet or Fast Internet instead of High-speed Gigabyte Internet.

No Parental Controls.

Inspection Setting is default.

DNS is Norton Secure.

2.4 Ghz is the problem.  Loses Smart Plugs, security cameras, Amazon Echo, phones, tablets and a laptop that connects at 2.4 Ghz.

Nucleus devices connect to Core (No ISP router is installed). UPnP is not on.  No port forwarding for devices.  No static IP assignments.

Quarantine says "Inbound or outbound malicious traffic detected".

Unplugged Core for a while and plugged back in.  Got some, but not all, devices connected.  Also the above mentioned change in what the Arris modem showed.

Along with similar issues, WiFi dropping ALL THE TIME - even when sitting less than 5 feet from the Core.  Constant need to restart the Core so it will work CORRECTLY.  I have been charged for 2 renewals of Norton Anti-Virus even though the Core was supposed to come with a free year and that year was supposed to be extended for existing users.  All in all - I am EXTREMELY disappointed with the Core and would return it today if I had the time and knew I could get a refund.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

CMS;

Have app on both an iPhone and a Android phone.  iPhone app version is 1.27.  Cannot connect to Core with the Android phone.

Log OUT on one of the phones to use the other. Don't attempt using them while the other is still signed into the Core account.

Cable modem is Arris 6141 / Comcast with only TV and Internet.  No VOIP.  No ISP router.

Is your ISP signal connected to the Arris model via the "blue" cable inlet or via "Ethernet" with a direct Ethernet cable? By default this modem is already a 'bridged" device? Look at this article , if this modem is a "rented" device from Comcast they use certain defaults that set . "True bridge mode" is only applicable/available on Comcast-rented gateway units; having it enabled turns off all routing/firewall functions of the gateway and makes it act like a basic cable modem (such as your SB6141). Settings on the modem internally will determine what ISP speed it connects to not the Core router. Since you have TV with Comcast as well the modem DHCP must remain enabled for that service to function. Consult with Comcast about your ISP specific settings. You MAY not have the correct modem to use Gigabit internet services higher than 300-400 GBS.   http://forums.businesshelp.comcast.com/t5/Equipment-Modems-Gateways/Motorola-SB6141-in-Bridged-mode/td-p/22416

Core should be connected directly to the Ethernet port on your modem since there is only 1, then to the WAN port on the Core (blue globe icon).

That screen shot of the malicious traffic would still be very helpful as well to determine what is being seen and why.

This sounds like you did not turn off the Auto Renewal for your old subscriptions. Just contact Norton Support and ask them to refund those renewals.    www.norton.com/contactcs

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

It is not a matter of using the app on both phones simultaneously.  The Android phone will not connect to the router LAN at all.

The modem is not rented from Comcast.  It is connected directly from the cable, not an Ethernet cable.  The entire setup worked fine for a couple of months.  Then the quarantine problem arose.  Recently these other problems have arisen.

The core is connected correctly to the modem.  (BTW, the design makes connections a challenge.)

She Who Must Be Obeyed has a laptop that connects at 2.4 GHz and keeps losing the connection.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

Hello

You are supposed to use the Norton Core Security Plus program with the Core. That is the free program for a year. You need more than just an Antivirus program. That program wouldn't get added into your subscription. If you were using Norton Security, then your remaining program could get added in.

CMS To take appropriate action, tap the device name and follow the on-screen instructions. If you see the device on the network and there are no indications there is an issue with it you should be good to go.

If you are referring to the quarantine, they have been removed from quarantine many times.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

Per this screenshot you should be able to tap the notice in your "activity feed" and it opens up with a statement saying what the traffic is that is being blocked. Otherwise we are chasing a ghost.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

I haven't read all the replies yet so forgive me if I duplicate somebody else's response.  I had the same problem, a couple of my devices are designed to only work on the 2.4 band and I had a heck of a time getting them to connect to the network. What worked for me was going into the app network settings  and choosing the option to use seperate names for the 2.4 and 5  bands. I was easily able to connect my devices then by choosing the network specific to the band the device needs.  While it means having 2 separate network names for my house, it seems to be working fine.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

SoulAsylum; Thanks but no useful information is provided.  All it shows is that on November 6 it started quarantining my video intercom devices that had worked fine until then.  A case has been started on this issue, but I have heard nothing yet.

Kbennett65;  Thanks, but I tried that and it did not fix the problem.  Apparently, the 2.4 GHz radio is not functioning properly.

After another frustrating call to Norton, I have given up.  Apparently the script they use does not allow them to address an issue not covered by the script.  They cannot comprehend the difference between not being able to connect to the Core and not being able to connect to the internet.

All problems cured by putting my Netgear R7000 back in service.  I've seen references to the Core's value as a paperweight, but it's a little too light for patio use.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

Hello C Mike Have you heard back from your case with your Core? I have to ask one more question about the quarantine issue you were having. Did Core suggest the appliance being quarantined was sending or attempting to contact a remote server labeled as a malnet? Just a final thought.

Cheers

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

SoulAsylum,

Had 3 voicemail messages saying they were call about my case.  Thought maybe something had been done.  Told me to call the normal number, but haven't yet.

Did connect the core by wire to my Netgear router.  Connected one Nucleus to the Core and same quarantine problem.  All it says at the "Devices" page is "Inbound or Outbound malicious traffic detected".

All it says at the "Activity Feed" is "may be at risk" and pages of dates and times that it was quarantined going back to November 6.  Prior to then, I had no problems.  There have been no updates to the Nucleus devices since I installed the Core in August.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

C Mike. You should be able to tap that quarantine notice and it open to further info about what the quarantine was for. IE a specific web url the traffic was purportedly being sent/received from. I had a Pyle IP camera that I used for a long time before Core. Once on Core it immediately quarantined it, with the info concerning attempts to contact and known malnet server in China. I trashed the darned thing and complained to the manufacturer. Of course without any response.

Your Nucleus intercom devices shouldn't be doing that as they are an Amazon product. Try getting a screenshot from your activity feed after opening the quarantine statement so we can see a bit more about this. Its a PITA I know but will help tremendously. Here is what I see when opening the quarantine then getting further info by tapping on the alert text. Hope this helps.

ADB.Miner: More Information

This blog is a joint effort of 360 Beaconlab360 CERT360 MobileSafe360Netlaband 360 Threat Intelligence Center.

Overview

About 48 hours ago, we reported an Android worm ADB.miner in our previous blog. This malware can replicate itself over Android devices by utilizing the opened ADB debugging interface. The spreading speed is quite fast, doubles about every 12 hours.

Over the last 48 hours, we did more investigation on ADB.Miner. For now we have conclusions here for security community's reference:

  1. Infected population has stabilized currently: Since 2018-02-05 15:00, the daily active infected ip addresses reached the peak at 7,000, and remained stable for last 24 hours.

  2. TV Boxes contribute part of the infected devices: All the infected devices are confirmed android based. Further analysis confirmed that part of them are TV boxes, but other devices are yet to be determined.

  3. We rule out the possibility of remotely enabling the ADB debugging interface analysis. The 5555 adb interfaces of those devices have already been opened before infected. We have no idea about how and when this port was opened yet.

Most of the victims come from China(39%, including Hong Kong and Taiwan) and Korea (39%):

With only 7000 devices affected, mainly in China and Korea, and the device has to have had the Debugging already enabled, and no further infections in 24 hours, I would suggest this is probably nothing to worry about at this time.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Multiple Issues with Core

Hello

All I said was that the miner can cause Android phones to be quarantined. I didn't say anything about this being the cause of all the quarantines being mentioned by C Mike or that it was something to worry about. All I did was to mention a link which was mentioned in ZNet newsletter today. I didn't make any references about how important it was. It was important enough to be sent out in a newsletter instead of waiting for their daily larger email. I didn't do anything wrong by mentioning the article. This doesn't mean anything negative against peterweb either.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.
