Hello Guys,

I was asked for feedback of the NPE beta.

I don't really have any feedback, but since you asked...

I guessed the download URL (www.norton.com/npe_beta) before I was granted access to the beta board.

I ran NPE and noticed a new GUI and rootkit scan was not enabled by default.  After the initial scan I enabled rootkit scan, restarted my machine and the scan completed.

No detections so can't comment on effectiveness or otherwise.

NPE is not a tool I would use often and not one I would recommend.  It's all well and good to say you can undo any changes made by NPE but it's a bit late after critical Windows files have been removed resulting in a machine that no longer boots.

If we were to highlight Windows system files that showed up in scan results, would that change your opinion?

In practice, I have not seen this kind of issue, but it is heuristics based, so it certainly is possible.

That might go some way towards avoiding a catastrophe for some of the more technically skilled users, but perhaps an accompanying warning, like, "these files are critical Windows files, removing these files can make your machine unusable.  For more information..."

In practice, I have not seen this kind of issue, but it is heuristics based, so it certainly is possible.

It was first brought up several years ago because we have seen posts saying, "I ran NPE and now Windows won't work", or similar. I'll let you test the new forum search engine to see if you can find relevant threads.

Thanx for the search results Dave. I'll talk with the team and see if we can come up with something for this concern. My goal is to get to the point where you guys are more willing to recommend using NPE.
