My Norton shows PC is on a Trial Subscription and inactive

I have two pcs (both running xp) which have Norton security installed. On the PC's Norton shows that I am protected and the number of days remaining.

However when I go to my.norton.com, the two pc's show up under history and show online but inactive. When I click on either of them the status shows

Norton Security with Backup

TRIAL SUBSCRIPTION

This does not seem right and was curious if anyone has an idea of the cause.

I am looking at this due to another problem I have with live-update never completely mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, it just hangs the computer at the finishing processing screen. Other days it works fine.

Thanks,

Check on each PC to see that Remote Management setting is turned on.   From your NSBU product window click on Settings - Administrative Settings and scroll down to the Remote Management setting.

How long do you allow the updates to complete? The final update appears to take forever to get to the Updates Finished notification. My thoughts are that there are some housekeeping duties done after the last update that delays the appearance of the updates completing.

Re: My Norton shows PC is on a Trial Subscription and inactive

Thanks Peter, Remote management was turned off. After turning it on, I did receive some informational messages on the local PC's but the status on My.norton.com still shows the pc's as being a Trial Subscription.

On the liveupdate issue, this has been going on for a few years now. The process says that all updates were installed, but never gets to the "green" ok screen. Instead the system starts to hang when it says finishing processing. Certain running programs continue to run on the pc but if I try to for example to shut down, I can get the start menu to show the shut down but when clicking on it, the shutdown option screen never appears. Screen updates also seem to stop if I close a program it's image stays on the screen even though task manager would show the program as shut down. I have just disabled the auto update so if the system hangs, it only happens when I am at the console.

Sometimes a version update through LiveUpdate can reset some settings. That could be how Remote Management got turned off.

The web site can take a little while to sync with your computer. You may be able to force the issue by opening Norton and clicking on Help - Subscription Status. That will sync your computer with the Norton servers.

Tried by checking subscription status, still no change. Guess I am going to have to just live with this.:

On the Norton Account web site, you can delete the devices from the device page. Then go back to the PCs and try the Subscription Status again.

Same here on one notebook running XP.  The other two notebooks (Win 7 and XP) are all OK.

I deleted the two pc's on my device page. However, they do not seem to be coming back after checking the subscription status, but I did notice that the remote management option is agin turned off but this time it is greyed out.

Guessing a RNR may finally solve the problem but do not have the time right now.

Hello Peter

I just found out that the default for Remote Management is now OFF. I looked at the ? at the end of the Remote Management setting. If you want to sign into your Norton Account, it automatically turns it to ON. Don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: My Norton shows PC is on a Trial Subscription and inactive

I have now had the chance to run RNR and it seemed to finally solve te problem on one pc (i have not done the second) but the process raised other odd questions.

When running the NRNR I tried running it from a admin account and the install refused to run, I tried it several times but it kept failing to complete with errors. When i ran it from my usual account it installed just fine.

Looking at the logs from the account which failed I show one entry which maybe someone could explain to me to help with the problem. The error was..

somehow this product has a valid AppID (or /NOREGAPPID) yet  isn't registered with Sevinst (during uninstall). Bailing

any ideas why this would show up on one user account but the install would work fine on another, both have administrator privileges.
