New Forum Bugs

After re-setting my New Forum password a few days ago, I decided to login and check mail at Inbox. When I logout from Inbox, I get "Access Denied" and "You are not authorized to access this page". The system logs me out OK, but there is a bug here. When I logout from Account, there is no error message. This seems to be a mail Inbox bug only. I was also demoted from Regular Contributor to Contributor tonight. It seems when I logged in the demotion took place, because I've been browsing the New Forum the past few days, reviewed two recent posts and both still had me at Regular Contributor. Even tonight before I logged in I checked a recent post I made and was still a Regular Contributor.

Don't worry about the "Ranking" system for now.  Even Quads is just a newbie

Re: New Forum Bugs

Ha! Quads, if you are a Newbie, I don't exist. FYI, that HP Notebook motherboard I replaced works great. I now have drives for Vista, Win7, Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux) and Zorin OS9 (Linux) running with it.

I wonder if anyone else can replicate my logout from mail error. I tried it three times to confirm it was repeatable.

Re: New Forum Bugs

Hi Ougrad.

I don't think the Access denied is a bug more a feature.

I think you can log out from just about any page now including your own profile/account.  Now as logging out does not actually take you to a new page that would have left you on your profile/account page, but now being logged out you should not have access to that and so you get Access denied.  Similarly your inbox.  Logical!

I believe that if you log out from any page that has public access then you will not get the message.

Hi Andmike:

That "Access Denied" still sounds like a bug to me, or at least a glitch in the programming. If I log out while viewing messages in my Inbox, I'd prefer to see a "You have successfully logged out of your account" message and be redirected to the main Norton Products page at https://community.norton.com/forums/category/norton-products or even the Community Home page at https://community.norton.com/.

I'm guessing that many users who see this "Access Denied" message are assuming that their logout failed because of a permissions problem with their account.

What's even more infuriating is that after using a link from one email and logging in as requested, if I then go back to my emails and use a link from another email I'm still refused and told to log in again and again and again .....

This is presumably due to the incorrect URL in emails showing http instead of https ? Surely that's a script somewhere central?

All users can see your basic account details so if you are just viewing your basic account page and log out, what is shown changes but as you say you do not get an Access denied. So to me this is logical though I would be inclined to agree with the idea of defaulting to the home page or similar if one logs out.

Re: New Forum Bugs

Here's another "New Forum" Bug I just discovered. I have tried twice to give Imacri in this Thread a Kudo. I click Add Kudos and the number 1 appears with the option to Remove Kudos. I even waited 30 minutes to log out, but it never stays. So, this time I'm replying to the Imacri Post I want to Kudo and am clicking Add Kudos with this reply. Even if this works, it's a bug. We should be able to Add Kudos without a direct reply to the Post we Kudo.

Re: New Forum Bugs

I'm seeing 1 Kudos point against Imacri in that post, though with the current settings we cannot see who gave it.  It would appear that on the forum threads page the Kudos numbers shown are only those for the first post in the thread.  Which again seems odd, but might that be what is adding to the confusion OUgrad?

Re: New Forum Bugs

Could be Mike, but not sure.

Here is yet another Bug I've discovered. Hopefully, this is NOT a change in how the system works. In the past, the most recent Reply to a Thread moved that Thread to the top of the list. It's not happening with this Thread unless this Reply does it. For example, the "Browser tab labels" Post was at 9:56AM today (9/22) and is still above this Thread. Also, the "Where is Symantec's Management" Post has been at the top after Andmike and I made Replies. I think the most recent Reply (in real time) should move that Thread to the top.

Re: New Forum Bugs

Just to clarify...Andmike and I made recent Replies long after the "Where is Symantec's Management" Post appeared, but this Thread is still lower. Oops, I just noticed the "Where is Symantec's Management" Post has been removed. Anyway, this needs to be fixed so the most recent Reply moves that Thread to the top.

Hi OUgrad,

Currently threads are listed by the date they are created / started and not as we are used to with new posts in threads moving the thread to the top.  Hopefully they will fix that soon.

Re: New Forum Bugs

Here's yet another Bug. That's four Bugs listed in this Thread so far.

Mike, I think you alluded to this above. So far I count 4 Kudos within this Thread, but there are ZERO Kudos listed in the "Forum Feedback" list for this Thread - the Kudos column.

I also have a question about the "New" column between "Replies" and "Kudos" in the "Forum Feedback" list. What is the "New" column for - what does it mean? If you scan down the list, there are several Threads that have the same number (greater than zero) in the "Replies" and "New" column. Can someone confirm those duplicate numbers are correct? In every case the numbers are either the same in both columns, or there is a zero in the "New" column. That looks fishy to me even though I don't understand the "New" column. Maybe Bug number five?

If you look back to old threads, most of them show the kudo count as 0 when it really had 5/10/ more kudos in the old forum, before migration.. Example threads are 'Malware removal forum recommendations' and 'How do I stay safe online'

Re: New Forum Bugs

Hi Nikhil_CV:

As Krusty13 noted here, the kudo count now only reflects the number of kudos given to the original (first) post in the thread.  I'm not sure if this is a bug or a deliberate change in the new forum.

I checked out your topic here that was created 16-Apr-2014 in the old Lithium forum and was given 4 kudos.  If I scroll to page 2 of the topic listings in the Forum Feedback board, I see "4" in the Kudos column for the kudos given to your original post, and not "15" for the total kudos given to all posts in this thread.

Kudos0

Re: New Forum Bugs

I think there may be two issues with the counting of Kudos.

The one most people are noticing at the moment is that the Kudos count on the forum lists page only takes account of the Kudos given to the first post in the thread.  I believe that most people would like this changed to the total Kudos given for all posts in the thread, but do not know if this will happen.

The other issue is whether the Kudos given in the first and other posts is being correctly credited to the originator of the relevant post.  I am assuming it is, and that when things settle down it will enable the rankerator to go back to allocating stable ranks.  However if anyone has good reason to think that Kudos is not being correctly credited to posters then they should try and give some clear evidence as I can see this as being of serious concern to a lot of users.

I am also seeing 0 kudo count in the thread 'How do I stay safe online' . ( or is it forum software hiding the counts away from me?)

Re: New Forum Bugs

Hi CV,

it is true, but this applies to all the old threads, I have not seen any thread with more kudos than 0 IMO, they will continue to count 0, unfortunately.

FWIW, in the last 2-3 hours I lost 4 kudos.
Today I had 93 and now 89 kudos.
I'm not worried about this but it is further evidence that there are still many thing that do not work as they should.

Hi Nikhil:

I'm seeing the same thing as you when I view delphinium's thread - 0 kudos for the entire thread, and I seem to recall there were at least 10-14 kudos just for delphinium's original post in the Lithium forum.  Also note that I got an "Access Denied" message when I tried to view this thread until I logged into the forum.

My own total kudo count has always been around 400 - 415 on my forum badge ever since the switch to the new forum. The odd thing is that up until today the kudo count in my account was always much closer to the "correct" count (+ 700) that I accumulated in the Lithium forum.  Today, the kudo count on my badge and in my account are both around 418, so it does appear that I've lost  just under half of my total kudos.

C'est la vie.

Re: New Forum Bugs

I do not know what the position is on the old posts, and whether the kudos previously shown will be returned or not but I do know that the Mods are aware of a technical error in the counting of Kudos on the new forums which had resulted in some over counting.  I assume that the drop in Kudos count seen by a few of you is the result in them attempting to rectify that.

As we know the current ranking markings are broken, but I didn't think we did this for ranking, so maybe we should just allow the team a little time to get some of the more important functional issues sorted .....

Re: New Forum Bugs

Well Andmike, me too! Eventhough kudo count is a part of ranking, the posts I refered to were the posts which are recommended to be read by new members with the issue of infection or similar troubles. So I assumed kudo count will have some effect in determining the value of post. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Since the topic of this thread is Forum bugs, I thought listing and discussing the bugs will help the behind the scene people to easily track what is down.

Hi OUgrad.

After you log out you should not expect access to any post edit screen.  Such access is only allowed when you are logged in.  When you are logged in all threads have an edit box at the bottom, was it visible when you logged out.  If it was I would expect to see Access denied, but I would also expect to be able to go to other locations in the forums and read what people who are logged out can read.  I have not tried this but if you do a page refresh does it bring back the thread without the edit screen or Access Denied?

Or have I misunderstood what you meant?

Re: New Forum Bugs

Hi all , Also if I edited a post, its creation time stamp is changed to time stamp when it was edited and hence re-arranging messages accordingly. This is leading to a lot of disordered messages (notice that some [ actually almost all messages that were edited in forum except OP ] old threads have got disordered messages?) and is causing confusions, hence forcing reader to reread the exchange of messages inorder to get clear view of content mentioned. Take for example, I posted a reply which lead to a lot of criticism within 50 minutes of post , hence edited it which made my post to be at the tail of discussion (now I have another 60 minutes to edit because forum software changed my post's timestamp to the time of edit. ) . Again criticism continued and I changed the topic entirely and hence again my post came to tail end. Now anyone visiting that thread later will see that a lot of people criticising unknown target, and mine as last post. Is it nice? I would suggest that the timestamp shall be static which will also restrict the editing time to 60 minutes after initial post.

I certainly hope so. I  reported it a good while back and like you I cannot access my Account here in the forums to verify or change any settings, some of which affect how I get advisories, or don't.

Are you experiencing any special "features" that led you to try to access your account.
