NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

This is my first post on this message board but I have read a number of the posts related to this matter and have yet to find a solution that works for my situation.

I am running windows XP SP 3.  About one week ago, I realized that I had not recently run a full system scan.  As I went to the taskbar tray to open NIS 2009 for that scan, I realize the icon was not there.  Then I double clicked on the icon on the desktop and I received the "specified path cannot be found" error message.

I then spent several hours speaking with the Symantec online support team as we try to work through the problem.  This spanned nearly a day and I cannot remember all of the steps.  However the last steps were to go into the safe mode, use the Norton removal tool, remove NIS 2009 and reinstall (the reinstall version is 16.0.1.33).  I did that on the number of occasions having read that sometimes one might need to run the Norton removal tool more than once in order to adequately remove the software.  In each case, the install seems to progress normally as long as I don't do a live update and don't restart the computer.  If I do either of these NIS 2009 will not start and I get the same error message.

One of the experienced posters has suggested to go to uistub.exe file itself and attempt to start from that icon.  I tried that and it did not work.

At this point of not quite sure what to do and I've wasted a considerable amount of time without making any progress.  I wonder if anybody in the community has any ideas on on how to solve this problem as I would like to continue using this product and restore my Antivirus protection.

Thanks very much for your help and Happy Holidays!

Re: NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

Try this: turn off automatic updates, and download the definition files from here.

When you can update this way your norton, then check again the error. If it works fine, than maybe something with the 16.2 update, and you wait until the new setup package will came out (I think in early January it will be available), then download that, and install, and check the error again.

For the record this is not a best solution, because you don't get the Pulse, and other definitions immediately, only when you download the intelligent updates (ones/twice a day).

In the filename: 20081225-040-v5i32.exe the -040- is the build, if the date is the same but this has changed, you can download it again, it containes some new definitions.

Hi jerogers,

If you right click on the NIS desktop Icon or right click on the icon in Start > All Programs > Norton Internet Security and then select Properties, does the Target location look this, indicating the 16.2.0.7  engine?

You should also be aware that if the 16.2.0.7 update was received, it requires a restart for which you may not be prompted. Additionally, a second restart is often required to remove the previous engine.

Phil,

Used NRT and then reinstalled.  Then downloaded all updates.  Looked at the properties and saw exactly what you specified.  But still will not start - error message is "C:....16.2.0.7.uistub.exe" new line "The parameter is incorrect"

What do you think?

Hi Joe,

Follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7

2. Right-click uistub.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Let us know the results. If you get any error message, please post a screenshot or the complete error message itself.

Hi Yogesh,

Thanks but I got the same error message - FYI the location was "c:program files\norton internet security\engine\16.1.0.33\uisutub.exe" not quite same as what you said.  Message = "The parameter is incorrect"

After that I had uninstall because it blocked my access to internet.

I also uninstalled IE 8 Beta and no difference.  Now running IE7 again with same problem.

This seems like a dificult one!

Thanks for thinking it thru with me.

Hello jerogers,

If I am reading this correctly, you now have the 16.1.0.33 engine when previously you had the 16.2.0.7?

Phil,

Good catch!  I had to uninstall NIS to gain back access to the internet and so I hesitated to run LiveUpdate thus you saw the 16.1.0.33 after the 16.2.0.7 from the prior post.

All in all no difference and I am at wits end with this thing.  Actually this all started about a month ago when my jard drive failed and i had to reinstall a bunch of prograns including a new subscription to NIS.  When i did that I naturally got the latest (2009) - prior to that I had 2006 with all the annual updates.

I hope you guys can come up with something as I like the products but I need to get some AV protection soon and if it is not Norton it will need to be any way.  I cannot run like this too long.

In any event thanks for the time during the holidays.

jerogers,

Can you describe in more detail, what the scenario was when you installed NIS? Did you have to uninstall the previous version of NIS, or not? Did you use Norton Removal Tool to uninstall the 2006 version first prior to installing 2009?

After installing 2009, can you launch NIS using the system tray icon (next to the clock)? Or did this fail also?

Thanks.

Re: NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

Dear Oscar,

Thanks for the post.

In mid november, my hard drive crashed.  I had a new hard drive installed and they reinstalled XP.  I then realized that I needed to restore my Norton NIS protection.  I went to the web site and looked for ways to restore the previous subscription but found none.  Then I said, why not just buy a new updated version.  That is what I did - NIS 2009.  Since the hard drive was new, I just bought online downloaded and then installed.

That all seemed well until a few weeks later, I realized I had not done a full system scan in a while and I went to the task tray to open Norton - it was not there.  I went to the icon, double clicked - got error message.  I am not sure when the problem actually started because, normally, Norton runs in the background and I do not have any problems.  I was quite surprised to not see the icon in the tray and of course the error message!

That is when this long saga of using the NRT and reinstalling NIS began.  By the way, when I use the NRT the only way to remove is in the safe mode.   Additionally, I sometimes find reinstalling and removing blocks internet access after restart and thus have been reluctant to install it again.

The answer to your question on 2006 version is that I did not to my knowledge use the NRT but, if my memory is correct, after I got my PC back with new HD, I immediately installed NIS 2009.  FYI, I also tried to check the registry to see if all Symantec components were gone and I think they were after the NRT.

Each time I reinstall NIS 2009, the symptoms are the same - reinstalls properly and when I restart the PC - no icon in tray and if I double click icon on desktop, same error message.  This happens with or without a "live update" post install and post restart (as I thought that "live uodate" might be the problem).

I am testing some other vendor AV software right now and as I said am reluctant to go thru all this again and have the same problems.  If you can explain what you want me to do and why you think it will work, I might give it a try but I am concerned because I had loss of internet connection problems with it before.

Re: NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

jerogers,

It does sound llike something went wrong during the install. For starters NIS 2009 installation should not require a reboot after completion, it should be working already.

I think Phil's suggestion of reinstalling with 16.2.0.7 right away should be tried. We did put in fixes in that version for situations where NIS would not start, I wonder if this will work for your situation.

Prior to installing you should do the following:

1) Uninstall the current version of Norton. Then run the Norton Removal Tool, at least twice, to ensure that all traces have been removed.

2) Uninstall any other security software you have installed (you mentioned you were looking at some other AV products). Installing 2 security products simultaneously is definitely not recommended.

3) After this, reboot, and then proceed with the install. If NIS does run, LiveUpdate until you have all updates completed.

Re: NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

I am experiencing the same problem, only with one added glitch.  When I install NIS, it works fine until I restart.  Then I can't load it from the desktop icon.  But I can load it from the systray.  Also, twice now, after I've installed NIS, I go to install Systemworks 2009 Basic Edition but it won't install.  The disk does not Autoplay in the drive and when I try to manually run "setup" by browsing onto the disk, I receive a "parameter" error message.

I finally downloaded the trial version and used my existing licensing key, which seems to work for now.

But I'd love to hear why so many are having this issue.

Thanks

Now that I've finished the Systemworks install, I can report that neither Systemworks, nor NIS will launch from the desktop or start menu icons.  Also, there is no Systemworks icon in the systray, that that program appears completely inaccessible.

Any suggestions or explanations?

Re: NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

Broken desktop and Start Program shortcuts.  Error: "path cannot be found"

I have been searching all over this forum and have not found a solution that works.

I am upgradeing from NIS 2008 to 2009 onto three computers.

2 Dell Desktops Win XP SP2 - Dimension 8200 and Optiplex GX260 - ZoneAlarm, SystemWorks, Ghost and NIS 2008

1 Dell laptop Win XP SP2 - Latitude D620 -- Only NIS 2008

I started by doing it the recommended way by running Norton Removal Tool (NRT) first several times.  Then deleting all folders and registry entries related to Symantec and Norton.

Then I performed the install from CD without any install issues.  I was able to launch NIS once from the desktop shortcuts then from that time on I recieve the "path cannot be found" error.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times only to obtain the same results.

I was able to perform an upgrade on both desktops, without running NRT to which it NIS 2009 removed all previous version without issue and they are both working as designed.

On the laptop I can only open NIS09 from the Systray.

Have I missed a post that gives the cause and solution?

Thanks and sorry if this was answered somewhere else that I did not find it.

Re: NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

Hello gjay,

If you installed NIS 2009 from a CD, it may be the previous version. The newer version was installed through the Live Update Process. When the 16.2.0.7 update comes though, it will require two restarts of the computer. One to install the 16.2.07 engine, the second to remove the previous engine.

If you haven't performed the restarts then the desktop icon may still be targeting the previous path.

Try this: Run live update until no more updates are available. Restart your computer twice.

You mentioned that you can start NIS from the systray. If you still can't open from the desktop, then delete the desktop shortcut. Create a new desktop shortcut from Start > All Programs > Norton Internet Security > Norton Internet Security > Send to desktop (create shortcut.)

Let us know how you do.

On the problem machine have you opened Control Panel and looked to see if there is still a Symantec LiveUpdate icon there and opened Remove Programs and looked for a specific entry for Symantec Live Update ?

The 2008 versions had the application and live update as separate programs; the 2009 have a dedicated liveupdate within the program and dedicated to that program only.

Thanks for responding Phil,

I have installed from a new CD and ran the LiveUpdate until no more we available.  I am running I believe, the latest version 16.2.0.7.

As with others who have posted I too can not run it from the normal "START/Programs/Nortion Internet Security/Norton Internet Security" or even going direct to the exicutable: "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7.\uistub.exe" without getting "path cannot be found".   I cannot recreate the shortcuts witout getting the same error.

Otehrwise it seems to be working normally.  I just have to open it through the systray.  I just don't think I should leave it like this.

The Task Manager issue is strange, I don't get that entry. I even checked with Process Explorer. I'm guessing you don't get that instance when opening from the systray.

I did try double clicking ccSvcHst.exe from "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7" and got the same error as well as now I have multiple instances of "ccSvcHst.exe" in the task manager.  Only way to remove them is by a reboot.

Hello gjay,

I would like to suggest a different approach to this.

You have been installing from a CD which may have the prior version and then your installed NIS 2009 is getting the new build to 16.2.0.7 through the live update process. Perhaps something is happening during the update to 16.2.0.7.

Please run the Norton Removal Tool here at least twice with a restart in between and be sure all Symantec / Norton entries have been removed from your computer.

Download and SAVE NIS 2009 here which is the complete 16.2.0.7 version. Install NIS 2009 from this downloaded package. Once installed, please run a manual Live Update to get all the current definitions.

Let us know how you do.

I have downloaded both of your links and will do as you suggested.  One question, you said "run a manual LiveUpdate" do you mean launching it from with-in NIS09 application?  Or is there some place on Symantec's site I should try to run it?

Now the plot thickens.

I have double checked and my path is a single reference to Norton Internet Security.

However, it would be a quick edit to the target adding the second Norton Internet Security to see if that works.

Phil_d and huwyngr,

And even thicker plot....

I did notice on one of my attempts to reinstall without first removing the previous NIS09 install, that it did create this double layer of \Norton Internet Security\ folders.  What I found was two sets of program files. They both had the BRANDING, ENGINE, MUI AND ISOLATE.INI folder and ini file.  However the first also include the second \Norton Internet Security\ along with the duplicat to which the new shortcut was pointing. (hope this makes sense)

Once I saw this I decided it was time to perform a Windows System Restore. Ran NRT several times, deleted any folders and registry enteries and re-install from the CD and ran LiveUpdate until no more updates were available.

This is the current state.

Results from Phil_d suggestions,

Steps:

  1. Downloaded to desktop

  •
    •
      • nis09en.exe
      • Norton_Removal_tool.exe

  1. ran “Norton_Removal_tool.exe” from step 1

  2. restarted per NRT request

  3. ran NRT again

  4. restarted no request from NRT this time

  5. Deleted any Norton or Symantec files from C:

  6. Backed up registry

  7. Deleted registry entries referencing Norton or Symantec

  8. restarted

  9. Ran “nis09en.exe” from step 1

  10. Double click on NIS09 desktop shortcut

  11. *arg -- same error "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7\uistub.exe" "The specified path does not exist."  "Check the path, and then try again."

  12. Opened NIS from systray icon

  13. ran LiveUpdate from within NIS

  •
    •
      • Downloaded/installed 14.85 MB of update

15.  ran LiveUpdate again

  •
    •
      • No Updates found

Looks like I'm back to square one...only systray icon will allow me to open NIS09.

Re: NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

You do not seem to have answered my direct question:

Have you looked in Windows Explorer and traced from C: down through the tree until you arrive at the uiStub file and seen exactly what the real path is?

When I do this it comes out:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7\uiStub.exe

which matches the path in the desktop shortcut as it should.

My first NIS folder is actually to an empty folder:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\09\01

I seem to remember that at one time NIS left some files from a previus version when you updated, or it might be from a failed to completely remove.

So I suggest you trace your path to that uiStub file and then modify the existing path in your desktop icon, or as Stu suggested, modify the path -- there is nothing wrong with doing that and if the path is correct and desktop shortcut does not start NIS then you have a specific situation to be dealt with.

Sorry for not being direct, I thought I had answered that with post on 2-10-09 7:09pm.  But rather that was in reference to the shortcuts.

I have on several occations drilled down through windows explorer to double click directly on the exicutable, "uiStub.exe".

"C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.uiSube.exe"

This path is identical on all three systems.  My two desktops (working fine) and my laptop (with the path error).

Thanks again for sticking it out with me.

Phil_d and huwyngr,

Have either of you ever come across:

Dell Embassy Trust Suite by Wave Systems

The Dell EMBASSY Trust Suite (ETS) is a catalog of Trusted Computing Group (TCG) enabled
applications.  Applications included in this package are EMBASSY Security Center with Dell
Preboot Manager, Document Manager, Private Information Manager, Secure Update, Security Wizards,
and Key Transfer Manager.

I was going through my Add/Remove programs and noticed it.  Its a security program the Dell included with my laptop.  I have never ran it nor intend to as we have around 600 Dell laptops at work that we could not get it to work nice with some of our company deisigned applications.  Does Symantec have any publications concerning "Embassy Suite" or "Wave Systems"?

When I first came across these posting I noted that on one occasion they mentioned having a Dell laptop.

Just a thought...

I know of it, but have not researched it heavily.

If I'm not mistaken, it is a higher level of security for logins and file encryption in case your computer is stolen.

I'll have to look into it more to see if there are any components that would interfere with Norton.

But thanks for mentioning it - every bit helps.

Any more thoughts these issues?  They seem related in the sense that the symptoms are nearly identical, although the error messages are slightly different.
