NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

I've been a NIS 4 Mac user for over 3 years.  No problems with NIS 4 Mac until the Mavericks version was released.  I have NIS 4 Mac on 2 Macs.  Both Mac-minis.  One  a 2009 and one a 2013 mini.  Both Macs have exactly the same problems.  There are 2 main problems.

1) NIS 4 Mac does not ignore Apple Signed Apps in Application Blocking if "Allow applications that are signed by Apple" option is checked

2) Spurious objects, i.e. mp3s, image, lproj files, etc, etc are highligted as trying to access the Internet, and are frequenetly blocked by NIS 4 Mac.

Examples of issue 1. are such as OSX Server has a DNS service, and it uses a Unix program called "named" to listen for DNS requests.  Even if I explicitly alow "named" in the Application Blocking GUI NIS 4 Mac still blocks this app.  It is part of the Server app that is Apple signed code.  I'd expect that Application Blocking should ignore this app, and other Apple apps like it.  I run OS X Server on both Macs and have the same problem on both Macs.  I have re-instaleld NIS 4 Mac on both Macs and the problem reoccurs.

Examples of issue 2 are already document on this Community Forum, and has been occuring since last year, so I am not reporting something that is new.  An example might be a Norton script, i.e. "/private/tmp/symtmp.jhdcvP/action.sh" or "/System/Library/PreferencePanes/DigiHubDiscs.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Spanish.lproj" or "/Applications/GarageBand.app/Contents/Frameworks/MADSP.framework/Versions/A/Resources/nl.lproj" or "/Applications/GarageBand.app/Contents/Resources/no.lproj/QuickHelpDefault.plist" or "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Flash Player Install Manager/fpsaud" or "/Library/Dictionaries/New Oxford American Dictionary.dictionary/Contents/Images/pinafore, child's.png" or "/.fseventsd/0000000011425f3a".

I am sure many other NIS 4 Mac users are experieinceing these problems on OSX Mavericks.

So come on Symantec;  can you please fix NIS 4 Mac back to its former glory and bring it back up to the standards that your customers have come to expect from you?

Cheers,

NIS 4 is not supported on Mavericks, you will need to upgrade to NIS 5.

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

Hi Lee_G,

A common error of interpretation, so apologies for confusing you.  Where I wrote the Subject as "NIS 4 Mac" read it as "NIS For Mac".

The version of NIS For Mac that I refer to in my subject header is NIS version 5.6 (25), not NIS 4.

So, when will Symantec repair the train wreck that is NIS For Mac version 5.6 (25)?  Details as in my original post.

Can I rely on NIS to act as my security barrier when its integration with Mac OS X Mavericks is very clearly broken?  Or should I find an alternative Security product?

Cheers,

Pete

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

Thanks for the clarification, after I re-read the post I wondered if you might have meant that.

Sorry for your issues, I will ask the Application Blocking developers if there are known issues regarding the problems you mentioned.  When the "spurious objects" are reported as attempting to access the net, does the alert mention what Application (process) is involved?  Also, does the signed apps option work for some apps, or not at all?

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

Hi Lee_G,

On Signed apps, for instanct Server.app, which has many subprocess, works, but some of the subprocess do not work.  I wonder if Apple updated their certificates for some apps, and NIS for Mac is not aware of that.  Apple Xcode is another app that seems to have a problem with Application Blocker.

For the 'spurious' other processes.  It is always possible to walk the file path to identify the owning application.  I think in ht esecond part of my original post I mention the full file paths of some of the apps that are triggering Application Blocker.  I'd check them as a starter for ten.  Again, Apple XCode is one of those affected, but there are lots of others.

I also see lots of crash events relating to NIS for Mac in the OS X Console.  I wonder if it is those crash events that are triggering a condition that causes Application Blocker to behave badly.

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

Sorry I missed the examples in the original post (I guess I stopped reading after I incorrectly interpreted the "4").  I'll pass this along and let you know if these were known issues being worked on.  Crash logs might help also.

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

OK Lee_G,  where do you want me to send the crash logs?  Can you confirm you mean the logs in OSX  Console app?

Thanks

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

HI Lee_G,

Have the developers been able to idenitify what the issues are with NIS for Mac from the various logs I sent to you?

Sorry, no updates since the initial response that it was being analyzed.  If I don't hear any more by mid-week I'll follow up.

Oops, sorry I dropped the ball on asking again.  Sending an email out now.

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

I have this problem as well. The pop-ups became too much of a headache, so I have disabled Application Blocking entirely for the moment.

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

Just wanted to make a general response that it's still being investigated and while we don't have an ETA, tomagion-guy's logs do show at least one problem that needs to be addressed (thanks again for sending them).  There's a lot going on right now so please bear with us.

That is positive Lee_G.  Glad some progress has been made and glad I could help out.  Look forward to the fix

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

Hi Lee_G,

I noticed that NIS 5 was updated recently to version 5.6 (25).  I couldn't see any release notes so not sure if it was meant to include the fixes for the issues I raised.  Operation of this version over the past week on both my Macs revels that the issues remain.  Perhaps the fixes for the numerous Applicattion issues have not yet been included.  Can you confirm if they were/were not included please?

Cheers,

Pete

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

NIS 5.6 was released several months ago, I'm not sure why you are only seeing it as recently updated.  In any case, the fix in question is still not in place, I'm not sure what version it will be included in.  I will make sure it is entered as a defect.

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

Hi Lee_G

It has been a while since I last enquired about this issue and the defect the Symantec Devs discovered in NIS 5 for MAC OS X.

I have to say that I have now completely uninstalled one copy of NIS 5 for MAC on my older Mac Mini 2009 device.  The constant rebooting was driving me nuts.  OS X's problem reporting tool frequently identified Symantec as being the root cause.  So I thought I'd see if the reboots disappear with Norton uninstalled.  I'd rather have the security of a good product in place, but for the time being I'll have to do without.

On my other Mac Mini 2013 version.  I still see tons of Application block messages pointing to spurious 'non' applications, as I originally described in my first post.

I'm coming up to renewal time soon.  I'd love to hear something positive about NIS 5 for MAC from you guys before then.

Cheers,

Pete

I agree... and more than this way... (I also have had this problem)

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

The defect that I entered is still being worked on.  Unfortunately, I can't comment on when a release to address this can be expected.

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

OK Lee_G. It sounds like a pretty serious flaw in the product, or that your devs are working on the new version of NIS ans the fix will be in there.

It would be great to get some aort of sticky on this issue for your customers.

Cheers

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

I, too, have this problem with Application Blocking of random data files.

In looking at the log, It seems that there might be some temporal patterns in when the problem comes up

(like every week or two), and how long it lasts (one or two days).  I attached the log, in case it may be helpful.

I hope Norton can fix this, as turning off a protection mechanism such as this is a weak solution in these days of billions of stolen IDs.

Thanks,

Tim

Re: NIS 4 Mac Very Broken

I've tested the latest NIS Beta version, which, looks wise, is a vastly different product, but I've seen similar/same application blocking problems as seen in NIS 5. I can only hope Norton have their best Devs working on this problem in both current and future product.
