NIS cloud or local issue

I've just installed win 10 on my laptop and re-installed Norton internet security, I logged into my account on line and downloaded from there. When I clicked on Identity Safe to import my details which I had previously backed up, everything was already there. The reason this is an issue is that I'm not to my knowledge on a cloud based account, I've been local from day 1 and have turned down all reminders to convert to cloud so I don't understand where this information has come from.

My questions are as follows

1) How can I tell if I have inadvertently gone to a cloud account?

2) If I have how can I delete this and go back to local?

Re: NIS cloud or local issue

Hi Boing,

I was hoping someone else might jump in here because I stopped using Norton Identity Safe at least a year and half ago after the major redesign.

To help me address you question I have reactivated it in IE11 - I was using a only a local vault.

There are two ways I know of to determine if you have a local or cloud vault.

1. When you login to Norton Identity Safe you may be presented with the following splash screen offering to 'Go Cloud'.

I don't know if this is presented at every login or if it is sporadic.

2. Once you have logged into Identity Safe, open Settings (the gear icon), General Tab, and if you have a local vault, there will be an option at the bottom to 'Convert to Cloud Vault'.  You must be logged in to see this option.

If you see either of these instances it indicates you still have a local vault. Perhaps someone who use ID Safe everyday can give you better advice, but that is what I can offer right now.

Question 2:  To the best of my knowledge once you move to the cloud vault you cannot revert back to local. From the Help section: "When you move the data from your local vault to cloud vault, all the data in your local vault is removed permanently. "

Hope that helps a bit.

Re: NIS cloud or local issue

Was your Win 10 install an upgrade over an earlier OS or a clean install?

When you logged into your IDSafe vault, did you have to enter your Norton Account email? That would have logged you into a cloud vault.

As long as you have had a local vault at some time it is possible to regain it if you have been converted to the online vault. Check the information gathered by user elsewhere in this thread.   https://community.norton.com/en/forums/retaining-your-local-vault

Phil: Thanks for that, there's no option to go to a cloud account so it must be converted at some point.

Peter: The win 10 was a clean install but before downloading the NIS software I logged into my Norton account and downloaded from there, would that have set my to cloud by default? I notice my PC is still set to local.

If I follow the advice in your link, would you know if my details are deleted from Norton servers? if they're retained it kind of defeats the point of going back to local.

I can't believe that Norton would suck you into something you've repeatedly turned down in such an underhanded way and make it so damned difficult to withdraw from.

I wonder if I was to back up my data then delete everything would the Norton servers delete  my data too in order to sync with my product? then I could switch back to local and reload my data from backup.

Re: NIS cloud or local issue

For some years now, when you create a ID Safe vault it is created in the cloud. The option for creating a  local vault has been removed. But as long as you had a local vault, you can still access it.

To delete your online data, what used to work was entering a wrong vault password three times. You need to enter three different wrong passwords. Then you are offered to reset your password. This process deletes all your stored online logins.

Backing up your data is a smart move, whatever you do.

I have recently just used the process in the link I gave to get my vault back.

One thing you might want is to keep both vaults. If you decide to use ID Safe on a phone or tablet, that will use the online vault you have created. It also allows you to sign into the Identity Safe web site to get a login if you are not on your regular computers

OK, I'll give that a go, thanks again.

Re: NIS cloud or local issue

Phil I finally got around to trying this but when I try to log on to my identity safe after replacing the files mentioned Norton is still asking me to log into my Norton account and there's no option to go to a cloud vault, I'm assuming that means it hasn't worked. Do you know if this method is still valid?

Re: NIS cloud or local issue

When you try to open your vault, do you see a link to open local vault? If so, it did work and you have both local and online vaults.

If you do not see this, it did not work and you will have to do what I had to do in this post from the thread above.

Re: NIS cloud or local issue

No, I don't see this, I'll try a clean install tomorrow and see if it helps. When Phoneman says to log off your wind user account I take it he just means a restart of windows basically?

Re: NIS cloud or local issue

The point that I needed to make is that you have to reinstall your Norton, then move the necessary files before opening ID Safe for the first time.
