NIS not opening after being prompted to restart computer using MAC

I restarted my mac after being prompted to do so from Norton.  When rebooted the Norton symbol was not showing in top bar.  When I went to Finder to open, it quickly appeared in dock and then was gone.  So I rebooted again.  The Norton symbol is now showing in upper right top bar, however, when I click on that to open NIS, it quickly appears in dock and then is gone again.  I can't access NIS at all.

I have had more issues with NIS than ever before and not at all sure I will continue with this product.  It has cost me at least 15 hours of work with the many issues I have had.

Appreciate any advice on how to resolve.  Hoping I don't get met with you must uninstall and reinstall which seems to be the answer to all of my issues.

Thanks,

Dawson

I have encountered precisely the same issue with this update.  An uninstall/reinstall attempt failed to resolve the problem — residual files from failed update interfered perhaps?

I have exactly the same issue, I even tried using the Norton remove symantec files script they have on their website so that you can do a clean install it still doesn't resolve the issue...after a complete fresh installation the norton now launches when select from the applications folder however where it says "about" etc. in the norton menu instead of saying norton internet security it just says (null) think this is a problem with software not sure on the solution yet...sometimes when i try to launch from applications folder it loads and i can scan, but the icon on the top bar is still missing.

I have two Macs one is iMac 5K the new Norton IS works fine no problems, the other mac is a mac mini and that's the one where it's just not working.

I have exactly the same problem too. I am using an iMac, OSX 10.9.5. Norton 7.x is the worst release I have ever seen. I have had more problems with this release in the last couple of months than in the last 5 years. If it doesn't improve fast I'm going to switch to something else. Anyone know of a good alternative ?

I "chatted" with a Norton representative who told me they are aware of this issue and are working on a patch.  He said it should be working by end of day.

Mine is working for the moment - until the next untested update causes it all to self destruct again.

Mine is still not working.

Re: NIS not opening after being prompted to restart computer using MAC

After having the same issue that others are reporting, I started a chat with Symantec tech support yesterday afternoon. I let the technician take control of my computer, clean out and reinstall Norton. He did this no less than three times. I sat and watched him work for about 90 minutes before I said I didn't have any more time to continue. THEN he told me that he had discovered there was an issue between NIS and OSX 10.11.5, and it would take "extra steps" to solve the problem.

I understand that there are so many apps that sometimes issues get overlooked. But when you have something that works as closely with your system software as NIS does, you would think they would have been prepared for this.

Re: NIS not opening after being prompted to restart computer using MAC

Just to add to the confusion....when I started my Mac up this morning the icon bounced on the dock then just stopped, I clicked on the "Norton Security" on the menu where it said "About (null)" I clicked on this to be shown an about Norton Security dialog box which said I had version 6.0 which was not activated...which was odd since the last I knew I had 7.1.

Anyway, so I forced quit this and re-launched from the applications menu Norton User Interface finally loaded when I clicked on the "About" it confirmed I have version 7.1.

So not sure where the earlier version is coming from as I believed the symantec removal script I ran the other day should have removed everything.

So, I'm still no closer to having it working again and have to put up with the bouncing icon for a program that's not working slowing down my machine until there's a fix.

I don't know if anybody else noticed this, but one of the first things I discovered that gave me a clue that all was not well was that the installer I downloaded had a modification date that was in the future. Not sure if that was of any significance, but I can't recall ever seeing an app with a future modification date before.

Re: NIS not opening after being prompted to restart computer using MAC

I have the same issue others are reporting. I started a chat and remote session with a support technician yesterday. After more than one hour of uninstall/install attempts and multiple reboots the problem still exists. Problem escalated to senior technicians. Norton needs to fix this ASAP.

I started a remote session with a support technician.  Ultimately, was elevated to a phone call from a senior technician because Safari would not open the remote session to allow the technician the ability to control my computer.  I ended up using google chrome (not sure why Safari would not open).  They were able to cleanup. uninstall, and reinstall.  So far, Norton is working as it should be.  Fingers crossed it stays that way!
