NIS not working/recognized

Was attempting to download music files from Walmart Music Store.  Download failed.  I contacted support for the music store and was told that they had calls all night concerning Norton not allowing the download.  It was suggested that I disable the firewall just for the download.  I attempted to do just that and realized that Norton would not run.  I tried as administrator, but nothing.  I then noticed that I had updates and tried to get the updates, no luck.  I didn't even notice that the norton gadget didn't have a green check.  My norton safe is missing.  So, since I was not able to get the updates, I went to symantic to see if I could download updates.

The website states NIS 2009 update was available.  I attempted to download, which placed the manager on my desktop.  When I try to run the update, "communication error" comes up and the manager continues to try to connect.

Can you give me any advise on the next step?

Vista home premium SP1, 32 bit.

Hi Packer4:

Can you check under Help & Support>about to see what version you have?  Also what other security software have you got on your comp?

Re: NIS not working/recognized

Do you mean Help & Support within Norton for the version?  If so, I am not able to open Norton.  Clicking on the icons just allow the system to think for a second then nothing opens or runs. I get no error messages either.

I use Norton as my primary security suite.  Windows firewall is turned off, so there is no conflict.  Windows defender scans daily for issues, but I don't run any other software.

Re: NIS not working/recognized

Hi Packer4:

I'm still considering the possibilities.  If you have access to another computer, I would suggest that you download a copy of the Norton Removal Tool, appropriate for the version year.

When you say Norton Safe, are you refering to the Norton Tool Bar, or Norton Safe Web?

Also download the Free version of Malwarebytes Antimalware

Do you have NIS on a disc, or was it downloaded?  If you don't have a disc you can download the trial version again and activate it with your key.  Once you have Norton working you will be able to get to your account to retrieve your key.

Please read through this thread, particularly the options for a clean install.  When installing I shut down as many other programs as possible and disconnect from the internet, just to prevent any conflicts.

I'm thinking it will take less time to re install than to search for the specific conflict.  Up to you.

You might want to disable Windows defender as well. Is some cases it keeps in the way

Re: NIS not working/recognized

It actually might be useful if I remembered to put in a link to the thread I was recommending earlier.

Re: NIS not working/recognized

Thanks for the information.  I agree that uninstall and reinstall would probably be easier.

Questions:

My original version was 2007 when PC was new. Since then newer versions were overlayed.  Which removal

tool version do I use?

I do not have NIS on a disc, therefore which trial version do I download?

I have my key in hand as well as in my norton account.

PS:  Norton safe = norton toolbar, which is gone.

Re: NIS not working/recognized

Hi Packer4,

First download NIS 2009 here and save to your desktop.

Since you attempted to install NIS 2009, choose the 2009 Norton Removal Tool here.

Run the removal tool twice with restarts in between.

Then right click on the NIS09 installer and select "Run as Administrator".

After installation you should perform a Manual Live Update until you get the message that no more updates are required.
