NIS09 conflict with Windows Mobile Devive Centre

I have just upgraded from NIS08 to NIS09 on recommendation from Symantec to overcome other issues.  WMDC now does not connect with my mobile device.  Uninstall NIS09 and connection works fine.  Reinstall and no connection!  Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: NIS09 conflict with Windows Mobile Devive Centre

Hi,

I’m not familiar with WMDC, however, here are a few questions and things to try:
1)      Do you know what kind of traffic occurs for the device to talk to WMDC?  How is the mobile device connected?
2)      Check if there are any rules in Program Control set to “block”
3)      Set network trust (via the network map) to “Full Trust”
4)      Are there any entries in the Security History that mention any "blocks?
5)      Finally, disable FW and see if it works.  (Please take the necessary security cautions and do not disable the FW if you are on a public or unsecure network.  And remember to re-enable the FW afterwards)

Thanks,

/Chester

Re: NIS09 conflict with Windows Mobile Devive Centre

Hi Chester

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have tried all of them.  To explain, WMDC is the new version of Active Sync in Vista.  It allows communication between mail clients like Outlook and portable devices like PDAs and mobile phones.  Re your suggestions:

1.  Connection is via USB.

2.  no blocks set.  In fact the relevant software is listed as 'allow',

3.  Unable to make any changes to this setting.

4.  No mention in history.  The highest level threat is a medium.

5.  Tried that, with no success.

Hi,

It's odd that if you turn off the NIS FW, that it still wouldn't work, but if you uninstall NIS, it will work?

Can you verify if the Windows Firewall is OFF?  It may be interferring with the traffic as well.

Thanks,

Re: NIS09 conflict with Windows Mobile Devive Centre

Hi

Thanks for your futher suggestions.  I can advise that Windows Fire Wall is definitely off.

I can also add from my investigations is that if the mobile device is connected prior to a cold boot, synchronisation occurs correctly.  However, if the device is disconnected and reconnected mid session, it fails.  Perhaps the conflict relates to something to do with the USB controller or drivers rather than WMDC directly?

Hi Paul and Chester

I must admit I have the same problem as well. For now I don't use the WMC anymore but it is very annoying that i get a pop up that it isn't functioning anymore

Re: NIS09 conflict with Windows Mobile Devive Centre

Thanks Stu,

Nice to know I'm not alone in the world!  Was begining to think it was something unstable and a conflict in my system.  Frustrating that I can sync my diary tho.

Currently waiting on a call back from Symantec techos.  Hopefully they can find a fix.

Re: NIS09 conflict with Windows Mobile Devive Centre

Hi,

We have been unable to reproduce the problem in-house unfortunately.  We can connect and sync properly.  To help narrow the problem down, can you start disabling each feature individually (make sure to re-enable these features when you are done).

1) Turn off FW (which you've already done)

2) Turn off Intrusion Prevention

3) Turn off Advanced Protection (Sonar)

4) Turn off AutoProtect

5) Turn off Norton Product Tamper Protection (Settings -> Misc Settings)

6) Turn off AntiPhishing

For each step, try out the connection and sync.  Sorry for the hassle, but this would help us narrow the problem down.

Thanks,

/Chester

Hi

I have just resolved the problem fully!  While searching on the Microsoft Support site, I found this link:

Followed the instructions and all now fully operational again.  Thanks for all your efforts and suggestions.

Great news, and how wonderful to find that a Symantec problem is actually a Microsoft problem.

Re: NIS09 conflict with Windows Mobile Devive Centre

I have the same problem.  But, my Vista SP1 was installed few months ago and my WMDC (ver 6.1.6965) was updated to the newest version via Windows Update automatically.  So, the sync between my mobile device (WM6) and WMDC was working perfectly until I installed NIS 2009.

That said, still I uninstalled WMDC and installed the latest WMDC (same version as previous, ver 6.1.6965.0).  Surprisingly, everything seems to be working now and am able to sync normally.  But, I don't think it's a Vista SP1 issue.  I still think it should be related to NIS 2009.  Regardless, am just happy that the sync is working now.

I did this as well and for now there are no problems anymore. Even with NIS2009
