No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, my computer will not auto sleep. I have used Powercfg and traced it to NIS keeping a file open for deletion.

I can stop and start NIS in the task manager and then the issue disappears until the next computer restart.

This is obviously a bug in NIS and I see postings on other sites with people having the same problem.

Can this be fixed please?

Hi @JohnAV,

Thanks for reporting this issue.

  • Could you tell me your NIS version number?
  • Any other additional information that you think will help us.

I've also sent you a Private Message requesting logs, Please check it when you get a chance.

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

Norton seems to be preventing my Windows 10 PC from sleeping.  I've seen this issue mentioned in other posts, but I thought I'd start one on this specific issue.

When I run the 'powercfg -requests' command I get the following:

[SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume4\Program Files (x86)\Norton Security\Engine\22.5.2.15\NS.exe (NS)
A file delete operation is in progress.

Note this seemed to start only within the past couple days, I have fast startup disabled, and NS and the PC are fully updated.

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

Is there a solution to this issue?. what do we need to provide so that it can be resolved? what does the message below mean? Seems like it should be pretty simple for Norton to explain the issue and give steps to resolve...

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg /REQUESTS

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

I am having a similar issue.  Windows 10 upgrade will allow laptop to go to sleep but Norton wakes it right back up:

Timer set by [SERVICE} \Device\Harddiskvolume3....\svchost.exe

Reason: Windows will execute "....mcupdate_scheduled" scheduled task that requested waking the computer

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

If I put my computer to sleep by right clicking on the Windows button "shutdown or sign out >", then selecting sleep. It will stay asleep for hours then it will come out of sleep mode and never go back to sleep.

When I execute C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg /requests I get the following: why is this happening? a a fil

DISPLAY:
None.

SYSTEM:

[SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files (x86)\Norton 360\Engine\22.5.2.15\N360.exe (N360)
A file delete operation is in progress.

AWAYMODE:
None.

EXECUTION:
[SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files (x86)\Norton 360\Engine\22.5.2.15\N360.exe (N360)
A file delete operation is in progress.

PERFBOOST:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

Seems like Norton is stuck trying to do something..."A file delete operation is in progress". How do I get this to stop.

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

NOTE:  This post should be in the Norton Security forum, not NIS.

Update September 7, 2015:

As of this morning, the computer goes to sleep normally.  I don't know if Norton pushed a fix, or if anyone else has had the issue disappear.

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

This appeared to be corrected when I auto-received a "Patch" about 2 weeks ago. Now the issue is back... I am thinking that I need to use something instead of Norton. I wish that Norton cared enough to look at these posts and resolve the issue. It appears that they don't care!!! is there another way to get Norton's  attention?

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

So it looked like the requestsoveride got set for the original issue with nis.exe.

Now I am dealing with symerr.exe keeping my computer awake - come on guys, get your act together and test this stuff better....

from powercfg -requests:

SYSTEM:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine\22.5.4.24\symerr.exe
A file delete operation is in progress.

AWAYMODE:

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

Has anyone from Norton looked into this?  After about 4 m,onths my laptop STILL will not enter the sleep mode.  As soon as it goes to sleep it "wakes" right back up automatically.  This is VERY frustrating.  Case #[Removed]

Thank you!

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

HEY - come on, as the OP of this thread, I am seriously disappointed with the lack of a solution after so many months. Every time my computer restarts, I have to go into Symantec, disable the tamper proof setting, kill the symerr.exe task (see attached screenshot) that NEVER quits on it's own! Come on guys - this is not a hard issue to resolve!

My symantec subscription expires in June and I will NOT be renewing unless this is fixed.

Thanks.

Re: No Auto Sleep in Windows 10

  Hello @Mohan_G

This O/P first posted about this issue back in last Aug. and there has been no response from Symantec about any fixes. Several customers have complained about this issue. Can some Symantec Employee respond to this thread please and come up with a fix soon?  Thanks.
