No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

I have Norton Security Suite (Comcast) on a windows 7 computer and in the selections on how the vault is handled, there is a selection at the top that allows the vault to automatically open.  Installed it on a new windows 10 laptop and that selection isn't there. Have to sign in to the vault every time, which is a pain.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

After installing Norton Security Suite, did you create a new vault? Were you asked to sign into a Norton Account when you created the vault on the Win 10 system? If so, you have created an online vault, that has different login security from the older local vault you probably have on the Win 7 system. One of the changes is, as you have found, that you get logged out of the vault more often.

Our Comcast guru @yank should be along soon to try to guide you.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

While awaiting your answers to the questions  @peterweb asked, let me explain a few things about Comcast Norton Security Suite's (NSS) handling of Identity Safe and the differences between the Local and the Online Vaults.

  • NSS does not use an Online Vault.  It uses a Local Vault.
  • NSS can use an Online Vault, provided Norton Mobile is purchased, and a Norton Account/password and vault password are set up.
  • An Online Vault is tied to a Norton Account which uses an email address and a password to log-in.  You must be logged into your Norton Account before you are asked for a password to log into the Online Vault.
  • A Local Vault is tied to a Window User's Account and does not require a Norton Account, thus a user must not be logged into their Norton Account prior to logging into their Local Vault.
  • A common question is Can multiple users on a PC have their own Local Account?  The answer is yes, provided each user has a separate Windows User Account and have set up their Local Vault..
  • Conversely, multiple users on a PC can also have their own Online Vault, each user would have to have their own Norton Account (email address and password), set up an Online Vault and give the vault a password.
  • The Online Vault would not sync with the Local Vault.  HOWEVER (you knew that was coming), if you have Norton Mobile installed any changes to the Online Vault made either on a PC or a mobile device should sync for that Norton Account.
  • Remember, you have a "new system" with a different Windows User - one that is not available on the Win 7 PC - thus you need to create a Local Vault on that system for the "new user".
  • If you desire to have the Local Vault  on the "new" system have identical vault log-ins as the old system, that can be accomplished by Exporting the old vault and Importing that data into the new vault.

Now hopefully you understand why a Local Vault can be opened (and remain opened) when Windows starts.  It does not require a log-in to a Norton Account prior to opening the vault.  When you start Windows you are in fact logged into the Windows User that you set up the Local Vault to use.

Let us know if need more info.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

I have Norton Security Suite on both a Windows 7 and Windows 10 laptops.  On Windows 7 there is a top selection for auto open for the vault.  On the Windows 10 laptop that I just purchased and installed Norton Security Suite, it's not there.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

It would appear you are using a cloud vault on the Win 10 system. To check, click on your email address that shows at the bottom of the settings screen, and sign out of your Norton Account. Restart your computer and try to log into your vault again. If you are asked for your Norton Account email and password before being asked for the vault password you are using a cloud vault, and the Auto open option will not be available to you.

As you are using the Comcast version, you should be able to create a new local vault and import your logins to that vault. Then you would be able to use that vault and have the auto open option available.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

aibudo, did you have another antivirus (even a trial) installed on the laptop prior to installing the Comcast NSS?  If so it needs to be removed to include using the product's removal tool.prior to installing NSS (even if the trial was a Norton Product).

The following provides info on creating a Local Vault in NSS:

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

I left out something in my previous reply.  When I click on "identity safe" a window pops up the has a button for "lets get started".  Clicking that is when it goes to "Connecting to the Norton Server".

Just to verify - you are connected to the internet - right?

If so what does this link provide?  All green (except perhaps Norton Family)

Yes, all green except for Norton Family.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

Yes, I stated that before. Norton removed that (according to the software when I started the install of Norton) before the install.  McAfee was on the computer when I purchased it.  It had a 2 week trial I believe.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

If there is something left over from McAfee, would Revo or CCleaner find and remove it?

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

Norton does not remove any other software during an install. It may suggest you should remove other security software.

You could try Revo or CCleaner, or you could use the McAfee removal tool found here.

Then it might be worth reinstalling Norton again, just be be sure there are no problems from the McAfee leftovers.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

Have given this a little more thought.  I appreciate your time with me on this, but have decided to give up on this issue.  May just install a separate password program.  I did uninstall McAfee in the Microsoft program in the uninstall program.  Referring back to my notes as I installed the Norton Security Suite, the window that popped up did say that (my words as I was writing them down probably don't match exactly but) Norton has detected another virus program and should be removed first.  It then asked if I wanted it removed now and gave me a choice of "yes" or "no". I thought that that was odd since I had "uninstalled it, but selected "yes".  Repeating, the thing is that I had removed McAfee first, but evidently there were some files still left that Norton detected.

Just uninstalling a security product using Windows Control Panel is not enough, as confirmed by Norton detecting the product. That is why I added the link to the McAfee removal utility.

Any way, good luck with your new choice.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

Couldn't sleep thinking about this.  Got back up, ran the McAfee uninstaller.  Uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Security Suite and now I have a local vault.

Thanks for your patience and work with this.

Crap, looks like that I just thought that this issue was fixed.  Got up this morning and everything is still the same.  No auto login and I might still have an online vault.  That's it, I'm done with this thing. Think that I'll just use my older Windows 7 computer for internet use.  Just use my new laptop for everything else.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

It is possible to have both a local an online vault. You just get to choose which one you want to log into at the login window. In the image below, if I just log in it will be to the local vault. If I choose to use my cloud vault, I click on the Open Cloud Vault, and I get to log into my cloud vault.

And it works the other way also. If you last used the cloud vault, you will see a link to Open Local Vault.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

I don't get that.  I click on the "closed vault" at the top of the browser and a get "Get Started" window pops up.  Click on that it goes to connecting to the Norton server.  This thing just isn't going to work on this Windows 10 computer.  Does that every time that I've shut down the computer, boot it back up and access the browser.

Something else that I thought was just a fluke, but it did it to me again just now.  Just tried signing in after the "Connecting to the Norton server" thing and it won't accept my Vault password.  If I try it 3 times, the computer shuts down.  I then have to reset my vault password and then it will work again once.  Accessing the computer the next time, try to access the vault, the same thing happens again.  Won't accept my password, computer shuts down,  Reset the password and it works once.  There has to be something that Norton Security Suite doesn't like on this Windows 10 laptop.

Just tried the Firefox browser and the attachment is what I get as far as the Tool Bar extension.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

If your computer is shutting down after incorrect password entry, that is more than a Norton problem. That sounds more like some issue with your Windows installation.

Click on Start and type CMD in the search box. Right click on cmd.exe and click on Run as Administrator. Type 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes. This will check your Windows installation and try to correct any errors it finds.

For the FF issue, you need to get the updated extension.  Mozilla made changes to FF that required add on developers to change the way they interacted with the browser. So when you see that message, click on Find a Replacement and download the latest version of the extension.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

Was in another thread and posted the following:

Having the same issue on my new Windows 10 x64 Home.  Also, don't have a selection for a local vault.  Only goes to the cloud vault, which I don't want.  Also, just realized when I want to open the vault, the first thing that I have to do is to sign in to my Norton account, then sign in to the vault.  Two sign in's to get to the vault is a bit much.  Wondered why when trying to open the vault and using my vault password, that the login failed.  Just figured that out.  Another bug that is a pain, is if you enter the wrong password 2 or 3 times (don't remember the exact number), the computer shuts down and restarts.  Just also read on the net that Norton evidently has discontinued the local vault function in their software and default to cloud.  That has got to be changed.

Ran the sfc /scannow the other day and it didn't find anything.  Will run it again after the last install.

Unfortunately that is old news. The ability to create a local vault disappeared about 3 or more years ago now. If you still have a local vault, you still have some access to it in Chrome and IE.

Users in the forum have been complaining since Norton first blocked this function. The only 'progress' on this issue is in the wrong direction. The newer extensions are giving even less control over how the vault functions.

Well at least my Windows 7 laptop still opens the vault automatically.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

aibudo - just a slight change in my thoughts.  Please look in Control Panel > Programs and Features and see if there is a Norton Identity Safe shown.  If so, uninstall it, reboot and then tell us if there are any changes in your WIN 10 system's behavior as far as Norton Security Suite goes.  Open Identity Safe Settings > Security Tab and see if the "Automatically open my Vault when Windows starts" option has returned.

Re: No selection for the vault to automatically open in windows 10

Nope. No Norton Identity Safe, just Norton Security Suite.
