NOF Not Blocking

When I boot up, Norton Safety Minder loads and says it is operating, and the icon is active in the taskbar.  However, it does not block any sites, whether I use Internet Explorer or Chrome.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled, but the same problem keeps persisting.  When I log into Norton Online Family online, it seems to be logging activity, but not blocking anything even though I have it set to block.  The settings all seem to be set up properly.

I am running Windows 7 and use Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection.

Norton Online Family was working fine until a couple of days ago when I got a nasty virus.  I believe I have cleared it out, but that is when Norton started to give me problems and I tried to uninstall and reinstall to fix it.  I even used the Norton Removal Tool after uninstalling to make sure it was all cleaned up before I reinstall.  One lasting effect of the virus is that it damaged Windows Firewall and it no longer will start.  As a result, I installed Comodo Firewall, and it seems to work fine.  Even when I disable Comodo, Norton is not blocking any sites, so I don't think that is the issue.

Given that I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, and it says it is running fine, I am at a complete loss as to how to fix this.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: NOF Not Blocking

Hi tdb,

Please also make sure you don't have any other parental control products on the PC.   For example, for Windows 7, make sure the Parental Controls option under Control Panel is Disabled on the PC. Click on Start Button  and select the option Control Panel, There you can find the option Parental Controls. Under that one, you can find whether you have enabled the Parental Control for your child's User Account. Please Disable it.  If you have multiple parental control programs enabled on the PC, it might interfere with the performance of Norton Online Family.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: NOF Not Blocking

Thanks, but I don't have Windows parental controls turned on, so that isn't it.  As another symptom, in looking at the NOF activity log online, it does not seem to be showing every web site I visit, but just some of them.  Also, when I go to web sites that should be blocked (but aren't), NOF does not seem to be logging that activity.

Any more suggestions, or should I just give up on Norton Online Family?

Re: NOF Not Blocking

tdb,

Just for testing purpose, can you please select "Give a warning but allow XXX on the site anyway" at Settings -> Web and click UPDATE SETTING" button to save the change.  Then visit a blocked site as the child (using the child's Windows account) to see if you get a warning message.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: NOF Not Blocking

Hi allup,

Are you having the same issue as "tdb"?  Does the giving warning message work (see my previous post)?

Thanks,

Katie

Re: NOF Not Blocking

I tried the "give a warning but allow anyway" setting.  After doing it, a little notification came up from the task bar saying that a setting had been changed.  However, when I visit a site that should be blocked, it did not provide a warning or block it.

Again, the system seems to be logging the normal sites I visit, but if I visit a site that should be blocked it does not appear in the activity log.  Really odd.

Re: NOF Not Blocking

There were some problems with the Norton Online Family Servers, yesterday. They have now been resolved.  Are you still seeing this problem?

Re: NOF Not Blocking

Yes, the problem has been going on for about a week.  Same symptoms and no fix, despite reinstalling several times.  I think Norton Online Family is going to have to be replaced.  Oh well, I liked it while it lasted....

Re: NOF Not Blocking

tdb,

Can you also please try to use different browsers to see if that helps?

Thanks,

Katie
