Norton IS 2009 16.5 Update and Windows Explorer right click context menu

Hello. After restarting to update Norton Internet Security to 16.5, I realized that on the default right click menu for files in Windows Explorer (including Desktop) were all in Windows Classic style. Notice that in the following screenshot, the first part of the menu is in Classic while the sub menus are in regular Vista style. This applies to all files using the default menu (excludes some files such as links to Recycle Bin, which use a different menu). All my settings were unchanged. This occurred right after the update.

Does anyone know what happened?

Thanks.

Very interesting.

If I was running Vista, I would try to replicate it.

BTW - what are your particulars with Vista, i..e. Revison, Updates, etc.

Could anyone else confirm this problem?

There is a thread running already on the context menu and 16.5 -- I've suggested a moderator moves this over into that one.

My settings are all on default, nothing has been changed before and after I installed the new update (Norton Internet Security 16.5.0.135).

My computer has Version 3.5 SP1 of .NET Framework.

Yes, I can confirm the problem and this should be merged into the other thread. If you disable the Norton context menu handler it reverts back to Vista style. In other words, the Norton shell extension in 16.5 is broken.Message Edited by MikeMcr on 03-21-2009 11:12 AM

Can anyone explain how to disable the Norton context menu handler until the shell extension is fixed ?

Re: Norton IS 2009 16.5 Update and Windows Explorer right click context menu

Hi.  I'm running Windows XP Home SP3.  Windows Explorer and PowerDesk both were crashing at offset cffd in kernel32.dll whenever I right-clicked a filename.  I disabled the context menu handler as follows: 1) Turn off the Norton Product Tamper Protection in misc. settings under computer settings in NIS.  2) Download and install ShellExView from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html.  3) Run ShellExView and disable "IEContextMenu Class".  4) Turn Norton Product Tamper Protection back on.

This solved the problem on my computer.

Re: Norton IS 2009 16.5 Update and Windows Explorer right click context menu

I also have this problem. It IS caused by NIS 16.5. Happened on 2 PC's with Windows Vista HP. One of them was a clean install. Symantec working on a fix?

In the other thread, someone from Symantec said he would be looking into this graphical issue. But that message was posted about a week ago, and we have not heard a peep from Symantec about this problem since.

If by this you mean WIndows Crashing and not the change in menu style, please don't assume that this is so without going through this thread here in this Forum:

Solved! XP + NIS2009 + right click folder = explorer crash.

or you can take these specific messages in it to see the steps that led to the solution despite the same assumption:

Assumption: http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=43140

Solution:  http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=43167

You'll find in the thread this message from me in the same thread decribing the background to the experience I hadl ast year with Norton 360 where the same assumption was made that it was Norton's fault! <s>

So I suggest you follow the procedure that imprimis took that led to the identification of the culprit. If you need help with ShellExView there are users here who can do so.

Re: Norton IS 2009 16.5 Update and Windows Explorer right click context menu

Sorry. But it all has a common link. The 16.5 update from Norton! Don't try to bail out the problem on our other software...

I did a clean install of Windows Vista HP. The first thing I did was installing NIS09. I installed the version 16.2.0.7, and the context menu was normal. I updated to 16.5 automatically via Internet, and rebooted. After reboot, context menus are screwed. If symantec just admited the problem, i would gladly wait for a fix. But if they can't even evaluate their bugs, after users reports then i guess i should change AV...

Yes, this strange change in the graphic style is with the 16.5 update. I´m not using powerdesk, but the visual change is in my VistaSP1 (fully updated and in perfect work).

Greetings

Re: Norton IS 2009 16.5 Update and Windows Explorer right click context menu

I'm not trying to bail out on anything -- I asked you a question

<< If by this you mean WIndows Crashing and not the change in menu style ... >>

and gave you a suggestion:

<< please don't assume that this is so without going through this thread here in this Forum:

You can ignore those if you want to.

So far as the change in Context Menus presentation is concerned Symantec are well aware of this and are working on resolving it as you would find from reading or searching here.

Do please do a Google on [Post hoc, propter hoc] -- it will help you considerably in troubleshooting. <s>

Re: Norton IS 2009 16.5 Update and Windows Explorer right click context menu

Serekantum,

Thanks for the image. I notice that the Context Menu shows Malwarebytes as an item as well as NIS -- as does mine in XP Pro SP3 and I do not see the problem.

If you haven't gone through the other thread I linked to yesterday it would be valuable if you would check it out and see if by any chance its presence there is having a similar effect to the Rename utility that the other user removed and updated and found stopped the crashing.

I suspect not since the appearance problem does seem to be different.

I have a testbed with VISTA and NIS 2009 16.5.0.135 on it and I'll check that out later today since I normally use the classic view anyway but I'll change that to the default VISTA view and see.

Re: Norton IS 2009 16.5 Update and Windows Explorer right click context menu

I've attached a screenshot. I have no need for that NIS entry in my context menu. I didn't agree to it being there. A support representative told me that it is impossible to remove it, but it is not because every entry in context menu is stored in registry.

This looks similar to an existing thread:

Are we discussing the same thing? If so, please post to the above thread. Thanks!
