Norton 360 6.2.1.5 Backup to DVD R failure

When I try to backup manually to a DVD R disc, I get the following message:

Insert Disk

The disk has failed.  Please insert a new blank,

unused CD or DVD into drive E:, the click OK.

I cannot eject the DVD to replace it.  If I choose cancel, it cancels the backup, but then I can eject the DVD, and try again.  This has happened several times, and each time, the error message comes up.  I know the DVDs are not bad because I can use them elsewhere.

I have tried to make sure all programs are closed before running backup since that seemed to be a problem in earlier versions of N360.

Hi Cindy,

Right click Start, select Open Windows Explorer, right click on your DVD drive and select Eject from the dropdown.

Let us know the results.

Tried that, even that doesn't work. :(

Do you have a different brand of DVD to try? Just because it works elsewhere, does not guarantee it will work everywhere.

Why would the brand suddenly not work, when it has worked in the past?  It is the same brand we've used for years.

Thanks,

Cindy

Have the backups to these DVDs ever worked? If so, when did the problem start?

Was it a new batch of DVDs? Maybe there is a problem with a specific batch.

Re: Norton 360 6.2.1.5 Backup to DVD R failure

Cindy,

Not a direct answer to your problem but in general many people find it quicker and more problem free to backup to a hard drive and then when the backup has been created on the hard drive, to burn that file to DVD or CD.

If you plan to do this and know in advance that the size of the backup will fit on one disk then that's very straightforward but if it's going to be larger then check both your backup software and your burning software for a setting the divides a large file into "chunks" that will fit on the disk you have chosen to use -- is it 4.7GB for a DVD ?

It would be worth your trying anyhow since there might be something in the dialog between the backup software and the actual burning that is going wrong.

Hope that helps either as a workaround or as a better way of achieving the result.

Re: Norton 360 6.2.1.5 Backup to DVD R failure

Hi Cindy,

Please try the solution mentioned here:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=20080929165146EN

If the problem still persists, I would like to know more information so that I can help you:

- Make/Model of DVD/CD drive you use

- Brand of CD/DVD you use

This would greatly help us to check the problem further.

Thanks,

HarryP

You need a DVD-RW or DVD+RW for writing again and again.
