Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

After having installed Norton 360, I find that whenever I try to access my hotmail account using Outlook 2003,  "Outlook has encountered a problem and must close".  Any ideas?

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

If you're using Outlook to access Hotmail, you'll be using http as the protocol.  The only potential item within the product that could interfere would be the firewall (you can go into settings and check the rule for Outlook.exe), but that doesn't feel like the issue here.  Do you have any third party add-ons or plugins into Outlook?  Adobe?  etc?  One of the add-ons may be encountering a problem.

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

I've changed the Norton 360 firewall for Outlook to allow inbound computer specific communications on TCP and UDP.  I'm now going to test it.

No luck.  It still crashes.

The only plug-ins I have, besides Norton, are Snag-it.

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

This is Norton 360 V2 ?

The error message sounds identical to the one I get when right mouse clicking on a file in explorer when I have a third party file manager installed  that also modifies the context menu.

Have you looked in Event Viewer to see what error message(s) is given at the moment of the error? You might get a link to an explanation.

Yes!  It is Norton 360 V2.  Good suggestion regarding checking the event viewer.  The following errors are recorded:

Hanging application OUTLOOK.EXE, version 11.0.8206.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Faulting application OUTLOOK.EXE, version 11.0.8206.0, faulting module MsouPlug.dll, version 2.1.0.55, fault address 0x0002579e.

 Fault bucket 191657597  &  Faulting application OUTLOOK.EXE, version 11.0.8206.0, faulting module MsouPlug.dll, version 2.1.0.55, fault address 0x0001a81d.

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

I can't help you with interpreting the error information but I'm sure someone can. Does it point to a plug-in as suggested? I've never used Outlook, just OE and in that you can disable all plugins, under Tools?

Did you get a link as part of the Event Viewer item that takes you to MS Technet with more information?

BTW What version of Windows? VISTA? Which sub-version? In case that matters -- I know the presentation of Event Viewer is different between XP and VISTA so I'm not certain about the link to Technet if it is XP.

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I went to the Microsoft tech site and got the usual circutious doubletalk meaning nothing.

Hopefully ther Norton tech team can come up with a solution.

Thanks!

Good luck!

It's encouraging that there are Symantec employees active here.

Did you allready try a clean reinstall?

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

Yes!  I did a clean install.  It made no difference.  I didn't go into the registry and purge all of Norton's inner secrets, but I did do a standard uninstall using Add/Remove Programs.

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

looks like a conflict in the anti-spam componants between 360 and Outlook. i googled the plug-in mentioned in the crash details and came up with this result that may help.

OP hasn't said if Norton Antispam add-on was installed or not .....

I note that was one of the questions I was asked here.

Have you tried the Norton Removal Tool?

Re: Norton 360 causes Outlook crash

i noticed that too, but was thinking that the presence of that dll (MsouPlug.dll) was indicative of norton anti-spam being on the system, i.e., what else could put it there?
