Norton 360 VPN does not auto start

Like many others who are complaining that Norton 360 VPN does not auto start.

I feel that Norton should either fix this or remove Norton VPN completely.

I turned on Norton VPN and thought that my connection was secure but did not realise it turned off on restarting windows.

Poor and misleading user interface.

I totally agree with the many posts here and elsewhere.  The lack of VPN auto-restart following reboot renders the feature defective in providing the very protection Norton's advertising puffs about.  Norton must correct this defect now, before their failure begins to appear as more than incompetence.

EAP build 22.21.5.41 recently added VPN 4.1 Auto-Connect feature.

Hopefully, release build will soon see Norton Secure VPN 4.1 integrated, with Auto-Connect, Kill Switch and Split Tunnel features.

Same issue with me.   Extra step necessary, to start VPN.  Should automatically start when Windows browser initiates.

Re: Norton 360 VPN does not auto start

After resolving to drop Norton after many years of frustration, I finally renewed Norton 360 Deluxe yesterday, in large part to get VPN.  Too bad I weakened at the last minute because I stepped right into yet another Norton boondoggle.  The "not ready for prime time" VPN feature, specifically a VPN which turns off with each Windows 10 reboot and doesn't bother to turn back on automatically.

After first wasting time looking for a phantom "VPN icon", which is apparently Norton's band aid for this problem but does NOT apply to my Norton 360 anyway, I was finally drawn to complaints on this and other forums going back to 2019, all hopeful that Norton would SOON find a fix.

Allow me to propose a theorem: If nothing has been done for 2 years, nothing will be done.

Re: Norton 360 VPN does not auto start

Thanks for the reply bjm.  I noticed the Kill Switch and Split Tunnel are already up on my Android phone.  I'll be standing by hopefully for the rest..

(BTW, other than this pesky auto-restart issue, the VPN has been working well for me on both Windows 10 and Android phone.)

Re: Norton 360 VPN does not auto start

4. What's new in Norton 22.21.5.44?

  • Norton Secure VPN 4.1 is integrated, with Auto-ConnectKill Switch and Split Tunnel features:
    • The Auto-Connect feature automatically re-establishes VPN connection if the connection was established and lost due to RAS error or internet access lost

Re: Norton 360 VPN does not auto start

I had no idea that Norton had added the Kill Switch & Auto-Connect feature until last week. I was excited to use it as I had been wanting this all along since purchasing my 360 Deluxe last year.

However, after enabling both features in the settings, I ran into trouble:-

  • On restarting my computer the VPN failed tor reconnect. Not only that, I had not idea I was not connected via the VPN until I checked myself! This leads me to believe the kill switch would also fail, as should this of prevented me from even connecting to the internet until the VPN established a connection?
  • At another time I was connected to a USA server via the VPN. I manually switched to a UK connection. And the software told me I was connected to a UK server. Well I was not as when I checked my internet speed I noticed it was still connecting to a USA SERVER via the VPN! All the time the interface was telling me it was a UK server.

Don't expect the support to be much help either. The person I spoke to on the online chat first requested to connect to my computer. Then when I asked why they then said there was a known issue and it would be fixed by next week. So which is it?

I since called the support number only to find out that that agent left no notes and did not add one month to my subscription as a way of apology like they suggested! Just as well I emailed myself a copy of the chat and the agent I phoned later today was able to finally locate it on the system.

I feel so bad for the people who have bought this VPN as a standalone product and have these issues. A VPN is needed by some as an important part of their work security. As such this VPN can be recommended at even a basic level in my mind.

Oh and to add insult, the person I just got off the phone to at Norton (supposedly a Manager), said she had not seen many issues with this VPN?? Really? perhaps she should come take a look here. I'm sure this is just the tip of an iceberg!

Have you gone into the VPN settings and turned on Auto Connect?

Re: Norton 360 VPN does not auto start

I have Norton 360 version 22.21.5.44 running on a Dell Latitude laptop under Windows 10 Pro.

I have the VPN turned ON, with Auto-Connect, Kill Switch and Ad Tracker Blocking all enabled.

The VPN starts automatically after a reboot although it sometimes takes a couple of minutes after Windows starts and a non-VPN internet connection is established before the VPN takes over.

My main problem is when I resume from Windows Sleep mode and the VPN fails to restart automatically at least 50% of the time. Note: the VPN was operating and providing a secure connection prior to putting the laptop to sleep.

Clearly this is still a work in progress, so I hope my problem report will help to inform the next update which I hope will come along soon.
